The Cenotaph 11/11/12

Hi 

Just thought I'd send you this from the many I took of yesterday's ceremony at the Cenotaph.

There was about 250 probably 300 people there; which is magnificent.

The photo shows one of the Boy Scouts saluting after placing their wreath.

Remembrance Day

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day and, appropriately, this year it's on a Sunday. This is what the Tameside website says about Remembrance Services in Hyde:

Hyde Central

Parade will assemble in Greenfield Street at 2pm and proceed via Market Street, Union Street, Travis Street, Mount Street, Ridling Lane, Frank Street, Orchard Street, John Shepley Street, Mottram Road, Union Street, Travis Street, Reynold Street and Crook Street to Hyde Central Methodist Church for a Remembrance Service at 2.30pm. At the conclusion of the Service, the Parade will return to Hyde Town Hall via Crook Street, Union Street and Market Street for a Wreath Laying Ceremony at approximately 3.30pm. The Stalybridge Old Band will lead the Parade. At the conclusion of this event, wreaths will be laid at the Falklands Tree Memorial on Stockport Road.

Newton

Parade will depart Rosemount Methodist Church at 10am and proceed to the War Memorial at the George & Dragon Square, Bennett Street for a short Service of Remembrance and Wreath Laying Ceremony commencing at 10.15am. Service to be conducted by the Reverend Alan Bolton. At the conclusion of the Service the Parade will return to Rosemount Methodist Church via the same route to disperse. The St John’s (Mossley) Band will lead the Parade.

Werneth

A procession will assemble at the Visitors Centre, Higham Lane departing at 11.45am for the Cenotaph on Werneth Low where a short Service of Remembrance and Wreath Laying Ceremony will be held at 12noon (Vehicular access will be made available).

At The Going Down Of The Sun

This is one of our Dave's favourite photos of Werneth Low, which he took in 1994. He calls it 'At the going down of the sun.......' he sent this in a while back to post as a favourite place photo.. but I thought then it would make a great start to a post I had planned for today.. 

The pictures below were sent in to us last December by Arthur Heywood who took these pictures whist touring the war grave sites of Belgium.. Dave tells me that before he goes he researches where the soldiers lived and takes a stone from there about's to place on the grave....    what a thoughtful thing to do.

Tom Marsden Remembered

We recently showed a great picture of a pair of bikers from Flowery Field, the picture was sent in by Roger... We were lucky as Roger also asked if we would be interested in these pictures of Tom Marsden... 

We were more than pleased to show them.. and thought they would make the perfect post for Remembrance  Sunday.. I'm sure we will all have someone to think back on today.. and wherever you are, and whoever you are remembering may this day be a peaceful one for you.

Smart Flowery Field Patriot. 

Left Southampton October 6th, 1914, for Zeebrugge, and was in action near Ypres.

I was able to send Roger a bit of information from the Hyde At War book as Tom Marsden was mentioned.. Roger said  Tom would have hated leaving for Southampton on that particular day,  Oct 6th as the following day was his daughter's birthday, she would have only been  3 or 4.
