Hyde United FC

Whilst Tom's unable to put any posts on the blog I've found a couple of items which may interest some people and the first is some photographs which were passed to me by Keith Oldham and which he says were taken by Bob Murray at a Hyde United v Fleetwood game at Easter 1969.

Jeff Fry (11) congratulates Kenny Hewitt (8) who scores Hyde's 1st goal

The first match that I saw at Ewen Fields was on New Year's Day in the late 1950s, 1958 I think. Hyde beat Northwich Victoria 6-0 or 6-1, but I don't suppose there's many people around now who would remember that game.

Historical Pageant 1931.

 photo d6b51022-07a2-4240-8850-e13050ba82b2.jpg

As part of the Jubilee celebrations in 1931 Thomas Middleton wrote a script for a pageant which included scenes from Hyde's past introduced by Father Time. This scene seems to be connected with the first section of the pageant which showed the conquest of the Ancient Britons by the Romans.

Another scene from the pageant of 1931. The pageant was performed on Hyde United football ground which was decorated for the occasion by a mock-up of a medieval castle.

Photos and information taken from the book Hyde in Old Photographs by Alice Lock.

Many Thanks.

Hyde United 1970's

Has anyone got any photos of Hyde United playing in the 1970's ?
I would also like some of any charity matches played in the 1970's especially the ones where Stuart Pearson and Alec Stepney (Manchester United) played.

Hyde United Centenary Match

Most people know about Hyde United's (then Hyde FC) claim to fame being  beaten 26-0 in the FA Cup by Preston in 1887 - It is still the biggest-ever defeat in English football !!

In 1988 there was a replay at Ewen Fields to mark the clubs centenary.
Here is a scan of the souvenir programme.
It notes Sam Allardyce (West Hams Manager) and Frank Worthington (former player of many professional clubs) as Preston Northend players.

Unfortunately, I cant remember the score if anyone out there can help,
please comment.

James "Jimmy Richie" Richardson

We recently received this message and photos from Bill Lancashire.

Over to Bill ..........
"A friend of mine from Romiley, Jean Murray, has asked me to let you have these two pictures of her dad, James Albert Richardson.

He is probably better known to lots of older Hydonians as 'Jimmy Richie', who was a star player for Hyde United in the late forties and fifties before he went on to captain Macclesfield.

Jimmy is the second from right on the back row of the St George's Class 1 in 1931 and is also the young lad with the bow and arrow on the left of the middle row on the pageant picture.  We have no idea where the pageant was, probably in the school yard judging by the stone wall in the background, or what it was commemorating.  Could it be St George's Day?  Maybe someone who was there could tell us and maybe identify some of Jimmy's classmates."

Union Street Church Football Team.

The following was sent to us by Alan Bell in regards to our appeal for Union Street Church's exhibition.

Over to Alan....

"I read with interest about Union St. church celebrating its 200th year. You asked for any information or photographs about the football club there. The attachment is a picture of the 1960-61 football team after we had won the cup in the picture. The final was played on Hyde United's ground and Union St. won 3-2. My name is Alan Bell and I am 3rd from left on the back row.Can anybody help me by filling in the rest of the names all I can remember is John Holt on the back row and I think it is Arthur Chesworth Holding the cup.
Yours Alan Bell."

Leigh Street School

Leigh Street Council School was opened on 7th November 1908.
According to Thomas Middletons "History of Hyde" the cost of the building and site and furnishing was £18,230 12s. 7d

 photo fdf3f5cc-ec11-471d-8296-0965dc87bc8a.jpg

At the top of the photo is the small Infant School building and at the bottom is the larger Junior and Senior School building. At the very top of the photo is Ewen Fields.

Looking at this photo reminds me just how close Hyde Uniteds Ewen Fields was in proximity to the school.  When we played rounders, in the school yard, the better players used to "slog" or hit the ball very hard over into the football ground so they could waste time climbing over to retrieve it.
Ah... happy days :)

The Battle of the Bridge by Bill Lancashire

Here is a poem that was recently sent to us by Bill Lancashire.
He also included this message....

"A few weeks ago a friend of mind challenged me to write a poem about Hyde United, so considering the triumphant season we have just enjoyed it may be an appropriate opportunity to post it. It's been written with a strong nod and a wink to James Leigh and if you you feature it I hope that the readers can spot my cryptic allusions to the ten pubs mentioned in the poem...."

Many, many thanks, Bill. Great poem, as always !! :)

Programme from Hyde United

Following on from the post about Hyde United the day before yesterday, here is a match programme from a game between Hyde United and Winsford United in 1958.

I wonder what the score was?

hydeutd58

I love the old adverts that you find on the old programmes.
I also like the simple telephone number, Hyde 30.
So much easier to remember than todays long mobile numbers !!

Hyde FC revisited.

A postcard showing the Hyde FC team of the season 1913/14.

Hydefc1913-14

Hyde FC were formed in 1885 the club changed its name to Hyde United in 1919, before reverting to Hyde FC in June 2010.

*Historian Tom Middleton has said the club began at Walker Fold on the old Hyde Rugby Club field but the North Cheshire Herald refers to a ground off Mottram Road. Hyde F.C. later moved to Townend Street but moved to Ewen Fields in 1906 after merging with Hyde St George's who played in the Lancashire Combination league. The club folded in 1917 during WW1 on the grounds of what was termed war reaction. When the conflict ended, demands were made to resurrect the club. Although the "new" club was called Hyde United (to avoid incurring the old club's debts), it was effectively Hyde FC under a new name and included many of the former players.

I came across the following newspaper cutting showing an earlier successful trophy-winning season for the team when still known as Hyde United FC.

Hyde F.C.

Photobucket

Celebrations were in order at Ewen Fields as Hyde FC were crowned Champions of the Blue Square Bet North yesterday. The Tigers had a 4 -1 victory over Boston United with David Poole, Danny Broadbent, Scott Spencer and Shelton Payne on the scoresheet. Nearest rivals Guiseley went down to a 1-0 home defeat against Bishops Stortford which sealed the Championship for Hyde with 1 game still to play...

WELL DONE HYDE F.C.

Hyde will now compete on the National stage next season in the Blue Square Bet Premier League. Well done and good luck for next season.

Hyde United programme plus adverts.

The following was given to me by my brother, Graeme, who is a lifelong Stockport County fan. (I bet he wasn't impressed with the score)!

I thought there were some interesting adverts in the programme, some of which I have included. I'll post more soon. Enjoy :)
