UPDATE FROM PAUL TAYLOR

A bit of info for you. The butchers shop belonged to William Booth, and was at 62 George St, he had taken over from his father George Booth in the 1920's. The butchers dates back to around 1860, when George Booth (not sure if same George or father) established the shop. The shop on the right was Joseph Brunt, newsagents. The picture probably dates to around 1930.

UPDATE FROM PAUL TAYLOR

Just looking through The History of Hyde book page 172, it mentions the great storms of 1927. The main one was October 20th, which has been posted about a few times, but there was another one later on Oct 28th. Quote "On Friday Oct 28th, a destructive gale swept through the town. Commencing at five o'clock in the afternoon it soon reached a velocity of over 70 mph, and during the night it littered every street in the town with debris. Chimney pots and slates were hurled to the ground etc etc etc. Another heavy thunderstorm hit the town on Wed June 18th, 1930, causing deep flooding in all parts of the town. Either of these could be the cause of the damage to the house.

Zion whit walks

Here is a photograph showing the Whit walks circa 1966.

More specifically it shows the Zion Congregational group of walkers including yours truly and my sister standing outside Middletons shop on Market Street.:) There are many old familiar faces on here... including the lady to the right who was a much loved teacher at Zion Sunday School called Gladys. Another favourite was Margaret who can be seen to the back of the group.

This picture is of 69 Travis Street  in , I believe, the 1940's with various members of the Etchells family  + friends.

69 Travis Street no longer stands. It is a small garden now. The alley way on the photo is still there though as can be seen on the photo below..

Daniel Adamsons Staff Photo 1947

The following was sent via email by David Stafford.

Over to David....

"Hi all
I have been loaned a photograph from my brother Jeff.
It’s a picture of part of the personal employees at Daniel Adamson’s DukinfIeld September 1947.
The pictures measures 37 inches X 10 inches so I have had to scan it in four parts.
I know it’s not a direct picture of Hyde but with the works being on the boundary of Hyde and DukinfIeld
it employed many local peoples so they maybe family or relative on the photo with the residents of Hyde.
Each section can be enlarged for you to clearly see the faces of the employees."

Many thanks to David and, of course, Jeff for the loan of the photo.

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to make the faces any bigger on the blog but if anyone would like a larger size let us know and I'll see what can be done.

Daniel Adamsons

The Following was sent to us by Judith Hunt....

"I have attached a photo I found in my fathers possessions. I know it is of  men who worked in the office of D Adamsons .  My father Harry Helliwell is second on right in back row.  He started as an apprentice draftsman at the age of 14 and was the youngest amongst them. Sadly I do not know anyone else's names but maybe someone's else's father or grandfather is in the picture and can recognize them I am making a guess that the photo could be around early 40's

My grandfather Charlie (Charles Helliwell) also worked for Adamsons for 50 years as a fitter and turner and on retirement received a gold watch engraved on the back. This is still in the family today and working well.  You do not see this kind of farewell gift  of thanks these days."

From wikipedia

In 1851  Daniel Adamson established a small iron works in Newton, Cheshire, expanding it a year later by building a new foundry called the Newton Moor Iron Works on Muslin Street (now Talbot Road), between Hyde and Dukinfield. He specialised in engine and boiler making, initially following designs created by Hackworth, making and exporting the renowned "Manchester Boilers". Adamson was able to experiment with the newfound wealth from the worldwide export of these boilers which incorporated ring joints in the form of his patented Anti-Collapsive Flange Seam. He was also one of the pioneers of explosive forming used in the foundry process.[2]
In 1872 he designed and built the Daniel Adamson and Co factory, a new premises in Dukinfield next to Dewsnap Farm (off Dewsnap Lane), with its entrance on Johnsonbrook Road. This new works was approximately 1,000 yards (910 m) from the old foundry but the site was large and had enough spare land around it for any planned expansion.
He improved the design and manufacturing process (pioneering the use of steel and taking out 19 patents in the process) over the 36 years he was involved with boiler and other foundry manufacturing. When he died in 1890 the business employed some 600 people.
Adamson's other business interests included a mill building company in Hyde ('The Newton Moor Spinning Company'), the Yorkshire Steel and Iron Works at Penistone, the Northern Lincolnshire Iron Company at Frodingham, and large share-holdings in iron works in Cumberland and south Wales.

Many Thanks, Judith and Wikipedia :)
Much appreciated.

Disappeared Shops - Holts Butchers

The following two photos were sent to us by Jacqueline and Colin Ridgeway. They show some family of Jacquelines including her Grandfather Albert Ashley Holt who had a Butchers shop on Market Street in Hyde.

Albert was married to Margaret who was the daughter of Amos Winterbotham who had been the former Mayor of Hyde. The shop was supplied by his brother Fred Bennett Holt who also supplied many other butchers shops in the area due to him having Beef cattle and Pigs.

The war more or less ruined the business for the Holts due to Alberts injuries and food rationing during and after the war.

The shop later became CAPPERS who also sold tripe. photo 46427c21-32c9-449d-b022-47d2a8339eec.jpg photo butchers001.jpg
Albert Ashley Holt was Jacqueline Ridgways Grandfather.
Fred Holt was Alberts older brother.

Many thanks to Jacqueline & Colin Ridgway for sharing.
Much appreciated :)

Christmas Party Photo

The following was sent to us by David Hamilton.

Over to David....

!I wonder if this Christmas party photo is of interest to you.

As well as my mother, brother, myself and Dorothy Edwards, there are four of my cousins on the photo.
It is worth noting that the six children named are all 2nd cousins of Tom.
I would say that the picture was taken in 1960, and has Proctor's stamp on the reverse, but I have no idea where it was taken, other than somewhere in Hyde.
It may have been in a central location, as we were from Newton, the Wigleys were from Dowson Road, and the Ovens's lived in Kingston Gardens".

In the 1960's Dorothy Edwards had a shop on Victoria Street, more or less opposite Sawyer Brow. Later on she had a flower shop at the top of Bennett Street, just a few doors down from the Cheshire Cheese.

Greenfield Secondary School 1953

The following was sent to us by Colin Ridgway.

 photo 17be2e22-7cf0-4180-bbc8-c4538913160b.jpg

As the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II  approaches I thought it most appropriate to look up a school photograph taken in the Spring of 1953 of Form 4R at Greenfield Street Secondary Modern School.
As I recall, all the Hyde schools had class photographs taken to commemorate the Coronation.
The country was still recovering from World War II and the Coronation was to be a big event, to be held as a great morale booster for all. So, perhaps the enclosed photo may serve as a reminder of this momentous event.
I have appended a list name of the pupils on the photo; however, after 60 years I cannot recall everyones name !
Hopefully many thereon are "still around" and can remember this happy time in our lives.

Over to Tony....

"This time it's one of Newton's own, I discovering this local fact much later.

Also, there are a few pics, indeed a study,  a good insight into just how much things and we have changed is gained by simply looking at the faces of the early 1950's, our grandparents, our heritage and how we once were.

God Bless them All".

Unknown Pantomime

Here is a great photo sent in by Graham Sharp.

It shows an unknown Leigh Street School Pantomime or Play in 1948 or 1949.

I think it could possibly be Dick Turpin looking at the Highwayman.
Maybe one of our readers is on the photo that can remember what it was and let us know?

The following was sent to us by Alan Bell in regards to our appeal for Union Street Church's exhibition.

Over to Alan....

"I read with interest about Union St. church celebrating its 200th year. You asked for any information or photographs about the football club there. The attachment is a picture of the 1960-61 football team after we had won the cup in the picture. The final was played on Hyde United's ground and Union St. won 3-2. My name is Alan Bell and I am 3rd from left on the back row.Can anybody help me by filling in the rest of the names all I can remember is John Holt on the back row and I think it is Arthur Chesworth Holding the cup.
Yours Alan Bell."
