HYDE ROAD CYCLING CLUB PICTURES

Today's post is from Margaret Ibbotson (nee Collins) and comes all the way from New Zealand, over to Margaret.

I am an ex-resident of Hyde, now living in New Zealand, while going through the Hyde Blog site I came across a photograph of someone who was in Hyde Roads C.C. (Wilf) at the same time as my brother, MICHAEL COLLINS.
I have several photos which my brother took during the 1950's while in the club. I would be interested to know if any of them are still around, probably all in their late 70's.

Lowry's Nightclub ..... Revisited.

I recently received an email from John Bennet, the name was familiar to me  but at first I could not put a face to it.... as soon as I started to read the email I taken back 30-plus years to my time as a doorman at Lowry's Nightclub Grafton Street Hyde.

Lowry's From Clarendon Road

Over to John ...
Hello,
I've just spent many hours reading through your web page on Hyde and Newton. Yours is a fabulously informative site.
I was even more amazed to find a section on "Lowry's" nightclub, Hyde, in the years I was the club's resident DJ-1979-1980. I am now wondering if the writer of the Lowry's piece, along with the editor of the website, would like some bits and pieces to do with the club, for future insertion.
BERJAYA

I chat to Carol, once wife of Alan, and her sister, Lynn a lot and we share great memories on Facebook.

Perhaps you could mention me on site, Lowry's was one of the happiest, funniest and brilliant places to work!!"
Best wishes

Lowry's Very Own Rocking Gran
Thank you John for this trip down memory lane... I'm sure there will be many who recall you and the Monday nights music... I'd forgot all about Rocking Gran.... Lowry's does pop up a lot on Facebook.... and apart from the stickiness of the carpet,  it is recalled with fondness by many.
Lowry's helped other businesses to do well, The likes of The Albion, Jolly Carter, The Queens Hotel, Cheshire Cheese, The Clarendon,  Church Inn, The Crown, Ring 'O' Bells, The Clarks, The Lamb, The Werneth, The Railway, The Ten Houses, The Hallbottom, The Bay Horse, Cheshire Cheese Newton, The Junction, The Ducki Arms... The Four In Hand, The New Inn,  even The Kings Head from Denton all had groups arriving in Tameside Taxi's.. I'm sure many more pubs benefited as well. All the local takeaways and Restaurants did well and started to stay open later. As mentioned Tameside Taxi's did very well.... most night the carpark was like a rank with taxi's dropping off or parked up awaiting a fair. I myself got to know so many of the drivers at this time.... some I am happy to see still behind the wheel... but each of them that worked Hyde rank tell me the same.... Hyde at that time was where the money was. All because one Alan Greenwood (R.I.P.) had the idea of nightclub in Hyde centre.

Hyde Motor Club

In the emails this week Keith contacted us about the above club...

BERJAYA

OVER TO KEITH
Does anybody remember Hyde Motor Club. It was started after WW2. It was for cars and motorcycles.
I joined about 1955 with a BSA Bantam. The club joined with Macclesfield Trials Club sometime in the 1980s and lost its identity.
Keith Mellor

I've not heard about this club myself, but hopefully you have memories and information we can share with Keith..
I have since found out the club is still up and running: ..... but now it seems to be just for Trials Riding.

http://www.macclesfieldforum.co.uk
Trials unlike most motorcycle sport has nothing to do with out and out speed but more to do with balance and throttle control. The club has been around under the Macclesfield name for around 15 years, before that it was the Macclesfield and Hyde club and before that the Hyde motor club which can be traced back to 1953.We run around 11 trials every year in and around Macclesfield

if your interested in having ago or taking a look at the cheapest motor sport visit the macc website.

Lowry's Night Club

 photo 431342_10150576085442880_754387333_n.jpg

Lowry's Night Club, this place was buzzing in the 80s, as was most of the pubs in Hyde at that time. It was owned by Alan and Carol Greenwood. The both put their own touches to the club and it bobbed along very nicely with a good mixture of ages visiting the place. Monday night was mostly 60s music and there was always a great turn out. The age group was older and wiser than the weekend crowd, but it did have it's share of trouble with couples falling out over who was looking at who.
Thursday night was really the start of the weekend, not as many in compared with Friday and Saturday but still a good number of people. I'd say this was a very unpredictable crowd on Thursday... mostly males more bothered about a drink than chatting up girls. This was the night it could really kick off.. and it was a night the doormen earned their money.
 photo low.jpg

John Kinnard, Tom Wigley, Dave Brinsley, Huey Travis.

Friday and Saturday... the evenings kicked off with a under 18s bisco. 7-9... a great set of kids turned up and the place was theirs for 2 hours. After that in was open again at 10 until 2 in the morning... These were fun nights for sure... I have many memories from here, some unprintable ha!. The club had a bad reputation for fights breaking out and for having a sticky floor... I'll agree the floor was a tad sticky with the amount of drinks spilt on it.. and no matter how many times it was shampooed it still felt sticky. The fights at the weekend were mostly scuffles between one group of lads and another.. nothing too bad really.
It was the place to go , there were queues at the door most weekends and mostly it was a friendly place where people went to enjoy themselves. I worked there for 4, sometimes 5 nights a week for around 5 years and thoroughly enjoy my time there...   If you went there or just heard about the place I'd like to read your comments, and please send in any picture of the place, inside or out.

Thank You To Karl For Todays Picture

Rosemount Methodist Church Centenary Celebration

The following comes from the Rosemount Methodist Church Centenary Celebration booklet of 1852-1952.
It shows the programme of events between Saturday June 21st to Sunday July 6th...

The range of celebrations shows how popular the church was at this particular time in its history.

Hyde Lads Club "Then and now".

The other day I walked down Travis Street, past where Hyde Lads Club used to stand. I was saddened to see that the site is now even blocked off to car parking !! Is this something to do with the ownership of the land being questioned? I was always led to believe that the club was left to the people of Hyde and therefore charging people to park on the site seemed wrong - I might be mistaken however ...

What a loss to the youngsters of Hyde that the land now stands empty. So much good could come of it if only the council would invest in something to take its place  for the Youth of Hyde and District .

Hyde Lads Club had football teams, boxing, judo, table tennis & basketball to mention a few activities.
The Lads Club was demolished around 1993

Hyde Lads' Club commenced on 5 October 1928, utilising 2 rooms in Hyde Town Hall. The Club's founder was the Chief Constable of Hyde, J W A Danby. The Club soon moved to the Wesleyan Sunday School, as it was too popular for the Town Hall accommodation. There were 489 members by 1930. The Club's ethos was to provide a safe and "sound" outlet for the energies of the young men of the Borough. The Club ran football teams, physical training, boxing and games such as ping pong and bagatelle. In 1930 the Club moved to new premises in Beeley Street, where they remained until the building was demolished c1993, and the Club wound up. This building included a gymnasium, assembly room, games rooms, library, reading room and lecture rooms. The new Club was declared open by the Duke of Gloucester on 6 February 1930.

Thanks to The National Archives for the above information.

Gee Cross Labour Club Outings

 GeeCrossLabourClub

We recently received this email from Ken Smith.
Over to Ken....

"My whole family were very much involved with Gee Cross Labour Club over much of my lifetime and I found reading the recent blog very interesting and nostalgic. I was a regular visitor, along with my parents, throughout my childhood and attach several photographs dating back to the late 1940's and 1950's that may be of interest to some of your followers.

Photograph No.1 dates from about 1950 and is of the group of children taken on the annual day trip to Blackpool. Yours truly under the 'Luxury Travel' notice to the right of the tall girl with the hair ribbon with the Belle Vue Aces badge in the lapel."

ChildrensOuting

"The remaining three photographs are of 'day trips', which were a regular occurrence back in the fifties and sixties when car ownership was rare and were, and no doubt still are, an excuse for friends to gather and have a good old knees-up!"

Mystery Postcards.

We recently received these postcards and the following message from Steve, via email....

"Hi Team Hydonian
I have just come across a couple of real photographic postcards which might be of interest to you.
They both have Werneth Low written on the back but that is it!
I was wondering if you could shed any light on the event which is taking place and the date - I think it is around 1910."

We believe it to be Hyde Cricket Club on Werneth Low but if anyone can shed any more light on them please contact us.

Eclipse Brewery token

Looking on ebay yesterday, I came across this strange little token.

We found out last year that the Eclipse Brewery stood around the junction of Fernally Street and Mottram Road . I haven't seen the tokens before though.
Does anyone have any knowledge of these?

Kiddies Christmas Outing 1952

Here are a couple more photos from Tony Downend.
The first one shows the Kiddies Christmas Outing from Newton Moor Working Mens Club in 1952.
The second one is a comparative shot taken in 2010.

I love the three open backed doubledecker buses waiting to take the kids!
