Greenfield Secondary Swimming team

The following photo was sent to us by an old friend of mine, Norman Ovens, who now lives in Michigan, USA.

He writes
"I remember the races in Hyde baths, a place I used to live in as a kid. I can't remember who we raced against , it may have been within the school. Names I remember are on the picture".

Hyde United Centenary Match

Most people know about Hyde United's (then Hyde FC) claim to fame being  beaten 26-0 in the FA Cup by Preston in 1887 - It is still the biggest-ever defeat in English football !!

In 1988 there was a replay at Ewen Fields to mark the clubs centenary.
Here is a scan of the souvenir programme.
It notes Sam Allardyce (West Hams Manager) and Frank Worthington (former player of many professional clubs) as Preston Northend players.

Unfortunately, I cant remember the score if anyone out there can help,
please comment.

Union Street Church Football Team.

The following was sent to us by Alan Bell in regards to our appeal for Union Street Church's exhibition.

Over to Alan....

"I read with interest about Union St. church celebrating its 200th year. You asked for any information or photographs about the football club there. The attachment is a picture of the 1960-61 football team after we had won the cup in the picture. The final was played on Hyde United's ground and Union St. won 3-2. My name is Alan Bell and I am 3rd from left on the back row.Can anybody help me by filling in the rest of the names all I can remember is John Holt on the back row and I think it is Arthur Chesworth Holding the cup.
Yours Alan Bell."

Hyde Wesleyan Cricket Club

Hyde Wesleyan CC played their cricket at Barmhouses, Godley before disbanding in 1934.

The ground and most of their equipment was purchased by Newton CC who have now been based at Barmhouses for around 78 years.
A number of the Wesleyan players opted to play for Newton, and those I recognize on the photo are Bill Critchlow (4th from right back row) ,

I think Arthur Bent is (2nd from right back row) and Joe Price ( Extreme left front row)

Does anyone know any other cricketers on the photo ?

Hyde FC revisited.

A postcard showing the Hyde FC team of the season 1913/14.

Hydefc1913-14

Hyde FC were formed in 1885 the club changed its name to Hyde United in 1919, before reverting to Hyde FC in June 2010.

*Historian Tom Middleton has said the club began at Walker Fold on the old Hyde Rugby Club field but the North Cheshire Herald refers to a ground off Mottram Road. Hyde F.C. later moved to Townend Street but moved to Ewen Fields in 1906 after merging with Hyde St George's who played in the Lancashire Combination league. The club folded in 1917 during WW1 on the grounds of what was termed war reaction. When the conflict ended, demands were made to resurrect the club. Although the "new" club was called Hyde United (to avoid incurring the old club's debts), it was effectively Hyde FC under a new name and included many of the former players.
