Aeriel view of Hoviley.

premotorway-1

An early 1970's aeriel map before the M67 motorway was opened showing Hoviley Brow and where Morrisons Supermarket now stands. Mottram Road runs across the bottom of the photo
. postmotorway
A look at a modern map shows that the shape of Hoviley Brow/Hoviley was kept to a degree, just the name was changed, as a continuation to Clarendon Place. I think they should have kept the name Hoviley .... although, on a post from   15th November 2011 there is still a sign stating "Hoviley" on the wall on Commercial Street.

Looking along Hoviley, towards Hoviley Brow in the far distance, (going up to the left) and George Street (going up to the right). The white building is the Kings Arms Pub.
(Many thanks Meglet and Hyde Lad) :)

Aerial Views continued

Here we have another in the series of Aerial views over Hyde supplied as always by John Hopwood. As before this dates from around 1987.

Photobucket

This one shows Byles DIY centre, Hyde Caravan Sales, Hyde Furnishing Company (now Oaklands) ,Hyde Sports (now a household goods shop), Jolly Carter pub and Andrews Gift shop which stood for many years on the corner of Hoviley Brow (now renamed as an extension of Clarendon Place). To the left of Byles you can see the Royal Albert (?) pub ,now the Bike and Hound and the Onward Pools betting shop ,later Fred Dones. In the background you can see Ashton Brothers or Carrfield Mill to give it its proper name. In the far distance you can see the Spire of St Stephen's Church in Floweryfield.

Lewis Street (Disappeared Streets 4)

Lewis Street was a street running from Mottram Road ,opposite John Shepley Street, down to Hoviley.
It still stands in the form of being the entrance road to Morrisons Supermarket although it isn't named anymore. It also used to be home to the Tram station .

The entrance to Morrisons.
Note the Electricity substation from the Tram Station can still be seen (middle left).

I have added these here to Nancy's posting as these chaps are stood on the corner of Mottram Road and Lewis Street. Hopefully someone will be able to name the shop.

These pictures have been donated to the blog by Ian Swindells.. now Ian did point out one of his relations... but me being so forgetful can not remember which one... but I'm sure Ian will forgive me and put us right... This group could be Hyde's answer to Eliot Ness and the Untouchables.. the chap second from the right seems to be going for his gun :O)

I'd love to see more pictures like this... it makes it more interesting when pictures have a street name on view, or another point of interests.
