I was born in 1939 BC. That's 'Before Computers'. Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all... Archbishop Temple's School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock 'n' Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during 'The Cold War'...and then

I became 'a family'. Which meant that I sort of missed the 'swinging sixties', but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the 'Thatcher Years' I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 50 years of happy marriage.

Lesus Christ ! .. What next ?

Posted by Big John on October 12, 2013

Remember my list of Vatican secrets ? .. Well, it would seem that I missed a document which showed the real name of the Messiah, and now some clumsy cardinal or other has revealed this name to the Italian State Mint and the name ‘Lesus’ now appears on some 6,000 Papal medals which were struck to commemorate the beginning of Pope Francis’s papacy.

What has not been revealed is that this document also shows that Lesus’s cousin was Ron the Baptist and his mum was the Virgin Cary.

Now if you read the Gospels you will find that old Matthew, Mark, Luke and John all got a bit confused when it came to the names of the twelve apostles and we all know that Peter was really called Simon (or was it the other way around ?),  John was named Boanērges, Thaddeus was Judas and ‘Lesus only’ knows what the rest were really called; so it’s more than likely that most of the names in the Bible are wrong.

What’s the betting that Lesus’s Hebrew hooker girlfriend was known by all his followers as …

… Hairy Magdalene ?   ..  ;-)

Testing times !

Posted by Big John on August 21, 2013

I see that a US study has found that atheists are more likely to have an IQ higher than that of religious believers.

Well I don’t know about that, although I am an atheist, as I have only taken an IQ test once in my life, and that was when I was conscripted at the age of eighteen, and this was to avoid spending two years wearing the hairy brown suit and big boots of an army ‘squaddie’, rather than a less itchy blue suit and comfortable shoes of an aircraftman in the Royal Air Force. I also told a number of ’porkies’ to the interviewing officer, and although I don’t recall, probably gave my religion as Church of England.

Now, on the strength of passing that test all those years ago, I can’t pretend to be smarter than all of those who believe in one deity or another, but I do have to wonder at many of the faithful’s gullibility.

If you have time, take a look at a few recent examples …

I know that ‘IQ’ stands for ‘Intelligence Quotient’, and who knows, it may be a ‘gift from God’, but if so, he also gifted many of his followers with only …

… half a brain !

What a “shower” !

Posted by Big John on July 15, 2013

Five minutes walk from my home is this beach …

shore 006

… and this is how it looks for most of the year. That is until the sun shines on a Sunday and the temperature heads into the eighties, as it did yesterday ! … Then the area looks like this …

IMG_0007 (1024x573)

…with both locals and visitors enjoying the good weather and a sea breeze. Some were even enjoying a dip in the sea …

IMG_0001 (1024x1011)… but, hang on a minute … what was I witnessing ? … I could faintly hear singing coming from the group far out in the shallows ! I adjusted the lens on my camera to see if I could get a closer shot, and came up with this not too clear picture …

IMG_0012 (1024x793)

… but, yes ! … some people seemed to be praying and others are submerging themselves in the sea and splashing water on their companions … It was a public baptism !

No it wasn’t ! … or if it was they had a very strange hymn book, for just as I was about to leave, the breeze from the sea strengthened and I could clearly hear …

… “Singing in the rain, just singing in the rain” !

What ! No Trekkies ?

Posted by Big John on May 16, 2013

Why am I not surprised to read that the most popular choice of ‘Other Religion’ in the 2011 UK census was “Jedi Knight” ?

I know that the USA has more than it’s fair share of religious nutters, but, if the figures in the census are to be believed, so do we, for it would seem that there are more than 175,000 ‘Jedi’ loonies in this country, together with 56,620 potty Pagans .. 2,418 sinister Scientologists ..  1,893 silly Satanists .. 11,766 wacky followers of Wicca, and 4,189 dopey Druids.

Now, it would seem, that some MPs are trying to amend the controversial same sex marriage bill to allow ‘humanist’  weddings. If this bill becomes law, then it will be possible for other sects, such as those mentioned above, to go to court to claim the same right; and quite rightly so, for why should one load of old marriage ‘mumbo-jumbo’ be treated any differently from any other ? I can see no harm in this, as long as they are dignified affairs, and don’t involve human sacrifice, chickens’ blood, and bare arsed priests; although a few naked maidens dancing around an alter will be acceptable.

Perhaps it won’t be long before we see ‘inter-faith’ marriages, say between Jedis and Scientologists. If you imagined that a Jew marrying a Catholic could cause problems, can you imagine the punch-up at the wedding reception when the bride’s Jedi father sets about the bridegroom’s mother with his lightsabre because Yoda told him that she is a Thetan from the “Galactic Confederacy”.

Finding somewhere to honeymoon would be difficult, as all such newlywed weirdos already …

… “live on another planet” !

Dressing up and playing silly buggers !

Posted by Big John on March 23, 2013

Well, it’s certainly been a good few days for the ‘mumbo-jumbo’ merchants.

Last week it was the turn of the Roman Catholic Church to elect a new Pope, with all that black smoke, white smoke nonsense, and hours of pontif poncing about in Saint Peter’s Basilica. A very spectacular, and I must admit, dignified affair, apart from, that is, the odd ’groupie’ nun and hysterical religious nutter: although all those richly attired and well fed old cardinals did rather dominate the scene, and made one wonder just how much it costs to keep them in the style which they and their acolytes so obviously enjoy.

Meanwhile, a couple of days ago, just down the road from where I live, we saw the old bearded ‘Arch-Druid’ being replaced by some new bloke as Archbishop of Canterbury and although Canterbury Cathedral is a magnificent building and the place was awash with men in fancy dresses, this local ’shindig’ was a bit of a mess and somewhat down-market compared to the recent Vatican extravaganza; and all that bongo drumming and tribal dancing could hardly be called “dignified”, although it did seem to raise a giggle or two from Charlie and ‘Cruella’: and what was all that Punjabi ‘hymn’ singing, banging on doors, and praying in French all about ? I bet poor old Thomas Becket was spinning in his nearby tomb, for this truly was …

… Mumbo-Bloody-Jumbo ’par excellence’ !

It’s time to say .. Bye, Bye, Benny !

Posted by Big John on February 14, 2013

Shock ! .. Horror ! .. the whole world is shaken ! .. Well it is if you believe some of those ridiculous news reports in the media this week.

What’s happened ? … An 85 year old man has decided that it’s time to ‘put his feet up’, although in this case those feet will be clad in some snazzy red slippers, and he will be moving to a refurbished nunnery where he will be shacked-up cared for by some nuns from a ‘closed order’. I bet that some old sisters, who knew him in his younger days, are looking forward to seeing him and waggling their wimples at him once again !

The official story is that the old Vicar of Christ has a dodgy ticker and is well passed his ‘sell by date’, but my clerical contacts inside the Vatican tell me that my ’Papal’ posts .. “Oops!” … Abbot Dionysius Exiguus” … “Vatican secrets revealed !” .. and .. “Pyro-Pontiffs” .. may have helped to expose this homophobic, misogynistic, passé Pontiff as a pervert priest protector, Mafia money launderer, Hitler’s ‘love child’, a ‘convent creeper’ and …

…  close friend of Jimmy Savile !

“Oops!” … Abbot Dionysius Exiguus.

Posted by Big John on November 23, 2012

I wonder if the Pope has been reading my recent post ? as it seems that the Pontiff has just written the third volume about the life of Jesus Christ, although how you can write three lengthy books about the life of someone who has never been proved to have existed beats me !

I was pleased to read that old Benedict believes that there were not any animals present at the birth in Bethlehem, which rather backs up my ‘evidence’ for the hotel receipt, as I doubt if the doorman at the Galilee Hilton would have let donkeys and oxen into the lobby, let alone a bunch of scruffy shepherds with sheep shit on their sandals.

Now, according to the boss of the Roman Catholic Church, we have all been eating our turkey, pulling our crackers and opening our presents (not to mention getting legless) on the wrong day, as the date of Jesus’s birth was miscalculated by some monk back in the days when the book, believed by many, to be “the word of God” was being written, re-written, made up and generally mucked about with by half the clerics and scribes in Christendom.

I have never believed that The Bible is anything like a true historical record, but something concocted from ancient myths and legends by scheming priests, to enable them to invent all the ’mumbo-jumbo’ and ‘traditions’ that would give them power over the poor bloody peasants of the day.

Now, although I have only read extracts from Herr Ratzinger’s work, he seems to be backing, to some degree, the ‘tradition’ theory, which is strange, for once you start comparing the myth with the historical records, and try and change the story, you are likely to run into all sorts of problems, which may well demonstrate the story to be …

…   a total fabrication !

In the name of tolerance.

Posted by Big John on November 18, 2012

In the top right corner of this blog is a quote from Voltaire on the defence of free speech, so I was pleased to see that the gay human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has supported the right of Adrian Smith to express his views on gay marriage.

The judge in this case said …“The frank but lawful expression of religious or political views may frequently cause a degree of upset, and even offence, to those with deeply held contrary views, even where none is intended by the speaker. This is a necessary price to be paid for freedom of speech.”  Not something you expect to hear in today’s ‘PC’ world.

As far as I’m concerned when it comes to gay marriage; if any priest is happy to marry two gay people he should be free to do so, but he should not be forced to do so by law; and it has nothing to do with anyone else ! I’m sure that there are more than enough gay and unbigoted clerics in the Church of England to go round, so there shouldn’t be much of a problem; and as for the Roman Catholic Church? … Umm ! Well let’s not go there !

On the other side of the coin, I see that one of my favourite examples of ‘free speech’ has also been in the news recently. Do you suppose that all the Muslim bus drivers …

… can’t read ?
