Early diagnosis, prevention and independent living
– the emergence of social welfare technology
Many recent initiatives and activities in the Region have centred on the development and testing of new technologies to improve social care and healthcare work, by making it more efficient, faster, better and/or less bothersome and intrusive for the citizen.
These technologies support “smarter”, more “intelligent” workflows and processes (automatic if possible), so that the disabled and those with reduced capability can do more by themselves, particularly in their own homes. This social welfare technology can also assist diagnosis of illness so that a loss of mobility or activity can be detected earlier or entirely prevented.
These technologies are viewed as the solution to mounting pressure, caused by changing demographics and fiscal constraints, on the high service levels demanded required by the Scandinavian welfare states. They often contain a significant ICT component are are increasingly identified by the distinctive label –‘social welfare technology’.
To various degrees, however, these technologies are also synonymous with technologies such as demotics, telemedicine, pervasive healthcare and ‘ambient assisted living’. They relate, for instance, to care and rehabilitation of the chronically ill, and prevention and preservation of autonomy and quality of life among for people who are in need of daily assistance.
In all these areas you will find cutting edge companies and competences in the Øresund region. Moreover, the openness of the Danish social welfare and healthcare sectors towards innovation projects, and the general acceptance of technological solutions by the Danish public, make the region ideally suited as a test-bed or ‘living laboratory’ for experimenting with social welfare technology solutions.
