It is the main town in the parish of Cloch Cheann Fhaola (Cloughaneely) in a Gaeltacht region where Irish is the main language spoken daily.

The town's name An F�l Carrach means 'The Rugged Fence' but historically it is also known as Na Crois Bheala�, meaning 'The Crossroads'. An F�l Carrach is situated on on a narrow inlet of Ballyness Bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and has a population of around 800 people.

The town is surrounded by some of Donegal's most spectacular scenery. The Derryveagh Mountain range can be seen from Falcarragh, with the peaks of Errigal rising up on the south and Muckish Mountain to the south east. Tory and Inisboffin Islands can also be seen from the town. Tory Island (Oile�in Thoraigh), the largest of the islands, is 9 miles from the mainland and has a resident population of around 100 people. Tory can be visited by ferries which run daily in the summer from the nearby Magheraroarty Pier.
