Gilik-Free Tilapia in Paete's Wawa Park
02 April 2010
He was surprised to see the once large bay where he used to swim in his childhood days is now almost dry with grass and weeds growing instead of floating bamboo and parked boats.
The effects of El Niño is highly visible on the almost dried up portion of Laguna de Bay. This area used to be a huge bay where boats park
The people are back and so are the businessmen like this taho vendorFrom the park is also the landing area or port of all bancas unloading their catch from fish cages usually tilapia, shrimps and ayungin.
a tanned fisherman unloads his catch of tilapia from his bancaFrom the fisherman, Tutubi was offered large tilapia (pla-pla) each weighting more than a kilo each for mere P60/kilo that he immediately seized. He had the two large fishes tied instead of cleaned on the site to keep them alive for a longer time
two large pla-pla with total weight of 2.3 kilograms for a cheap price of P120 only
the two pla-pla still alive on the kitchen sink
inihaw na tilapia (grilled tilapia)Note that at P60/kilo, is already cheaper than those bought at the public market but the bigger than the usual size of the tilapia can easily fetch a much higher price at the palengke.
On gilik, called liya in Paete, it is the muddy taste of fishes caught/raised in Laguna de Bay caused by certain algae present on certain seasons. Once the algae are ingested by the fishes like tilapia and bangus (milkfish), the fishes themselves will get the smell and taste of gilik. When buying fish, try to smell them particularly the gills for such obnoxious soiled/muddy smell before buying. Some unscrupulous fish vendors will try to hide the smell of gilik by removing the gills early to avoid detection but the trained nose can catch the scent and thus avoid being sold fish with gilik "flavor."
If you're looking for places to buy fresh seafood, try to buy them where the fishermen unload their catch for the freshest, cheapest seafood you can get.

First Mass Controversy: Magellan's Mazaua, Limasawa or Butuan?
31 March 2010
The day, March 31, 1521, was on an island recorded by Magellan's chronicler as Mazaua but the issue on Mazaua's exact location is still hot debated by several groups that even the National Historical Institutes stand on the issue is not accepted.
The official NHI stand points to Limasawa Island off the coast of Leyte, an island without a harbor making it impossible to be the lost harbor of Magellan according to others. Another claim is that Mazaua is in Butuan, but Butuan is not an island (unless geomorphologists can really prove the island of Mazaua is now part of Butuan where the balangay boats were excavated). The third claim is the area of Pinamanculan-Bancasi.
The issue can only be settled unless archeologists can dig up artifacts attesting to the claims or any person who witnessed the event resurrects on Easter Sunday.
The latter seems improbable and the former needs lots of money and time. For now the controversy and debate will go on the issue: “Where is the site of the first mass?"
Annually, a Tridentine Mass is held at Bood Promontory in Pinamanculan, Butuan to commemorate the first mass while there's also a commemoration in Magallanes, Limasawa island, Southern Leyte (that still some quarters claim happened in Barangay Triana, not Magallanes)
Are you still not confused? :P
489 years and counting, that's how long the search for Magellan's lost harbor has been going on.
The First Mass in the Philippines on Limasawa Island, Leyte depiction at the neo-classical Leyte Provincial Capitol. Another bas relief features the MacArthur landing in Palo near the end of World War II---
Other significant events of March 1521:
March 28, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan's three ship Armada de Molucca anchored on Mazaua
The first blood compact in the islands, to be known later as The Philippines, happened between Ferdinand Magellan and Raia Siaiu. (This is contrary to the misinformed claims of some Boholanos that the Sandugo, the blood compact between Legazpi and Sikatuna in the island of Bohol was the first treaty of "friendship." The said Sandugo was also not honored by the Spaniards when they later enslaved the Filipinos so why celebrate the historically-inaccurate Sandugo Festival?)
Magellan then took ownership of the island group and named it Islas de San Lazaro for it was the feast day of San. Lazaro. The name shall only be changed to Islas de Filipinas, by Ruy Lopez de Villalobos more than two decades later.

MMDA Number Coding Suspended During Holy Week
28 March 2010
MMDA number coding bans a vehicle with certain last digit to travel on certain days from 7am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm. There's a number coding window of 10am to 3pm where those banned from the roads can safely travel without fear of a traffic violation ticket (TVR).
In Pasig City, number coding is from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm. Travel window of 10am 'til 4pm.
Note that in Makati, number coding remains in effect on March 30 and March 31 (Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday) due to its being the independent "Republic of Makati," and suspended on Holy Thursday (April 1, 2010) and Good Friday (April 2, 2010).
Besides Metro Manila, Baguio City has similar number coding scheme implemented in Baguio CBD.

Palm Grove Hot Springs Resort, Asin, Tuba Benguet
24 March 2010
Tutubi went to Asin, in an unplanned trip thus unarmed with information on details except his usual adventurous heart to explore places beyond the usual tourist spots, he was able to do ocular inspection of Palm Grove Spring and Mountain Resort where he was able to take photos of the swimming pools of the resort facility.
There are two primary Asin hot spring resorts: Palm Grove Spring and Mountain Resort and River View. The former is more modern in look while the latter is more of the nature type in accommodations and general resort appearance.
Palm Grove Hot Springs and Mountain Resort Photos of swimming pools (Olympus 1050SW camera):
one of Palm Grove Resort's swimming pool closed for cleaning
the main swimming pool of Palm Grove ResortPalm Grove Resort Entrance Fee: P100/head
They have cottage rentals for daytrips and overnight accommodations available. please call Palm Grove Resort's contact numbers for the current room rates, function hall rentals for events (parties, weddings et al), promos, massage, spa, jacuzzi prices and costs and other inquiries. As of posting time, no official website still.
Palm Grove Hot Springs and Mountain Resort
Address: Asin, Nangalisan, Tuba, Benguet
Telephone Number: (to be updated once Tutubi finds the brochure)
No reviews of Palm Grove resort for Tutubi merely visited the place in a very limited time, he took very few pictures and went ahead to look for a place to eat (it's around 12nn when arrived there). No information on restaurant menu prices.
Other Asin Hot Spring Resorts in the area include Riverview Waterpark (not River View Resort) which is the first one you'll see on the road. There are about two other Asin Hot Spring Resorts but not as noticeable as the mentioned two.
Riverview Waterpark
Asin Hot Spring
Nangalisan, Tuba, Benguet
Contact Number: 09189388071
Email address: info@riverview-waterpark.com
How to get to Hot Spring Resorts in Asin, Tuba, Benguet:
Commuting to Asin hotsprings is easy though it's about an hour from Baguio City proper. To get there by public transport, look for jeepneys going to Asin Hotsprings near Baguio Public Market (upper palengke) (Note: jeepneys with signboard Asin Road do not go there, probably near Km. 6 only. Kilometer zero marker in Baguio is near Burnham Park, and there's a reference for the original Kilometer Zero marker from Rizal Park in Manila for reference). The jeepney will make the return trip to Baguio Plaza near public hotspring swimming pool. Jeepney Fare: P22.00
Driving directions to Asin Hot Spring Resorts, Tuba, Benguet:
For those with their own cars and vehicles, you just need to find Asin Road all the way to the your target hotspring resorts in Asin (tip: you may follow Asin Road jeeps until you see the resort billboards). You will pass by Bencab Museum, at least two steel bridges, kilometers of zigzag roads and two tunnels (that locals call "tatlong araw at dalawang gabi" pertaining to the three days and 2 nights when entering and leaving the access tunnels to the town of Tuba. Travel time is less than an hour and about 16 kilometers from Baguio Plaza.
If you have your own GPS, you may contact Tutubi for the GPX tracklogs and waypoints of his trip, one of his first foray into GPS mapping with his shiny new Garmin Nuvi 1300 :P

The Truth About Boracay's "Green Tide": Seaweed, Moss or Algae?
21 March 2010
Tutubi replied, unknown to many, the true science behind Boracay's "green tide" phenomenon highly visible during the hot summer months of March, April and May and absent during the rainy season.
the green algae on the beach of Boracay early morningLocals when asked about the green algae will usually answer the phenomenon is due to absence of waves during summer but the truth into it is the presence of nutrients in the water that's feeding those green algae. Not that Boracay's water is dirty but those nutrients sustaining green algae should be kept in check to limit their growth.
Numerous scientific studies specifically point to high levels of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate, usually found near factories but traced from inadequately treated sewage, waste water or leaked from septic tanks or sanitation systems. There was also a time several years ago when fecal coliform bacteria (e. coli) in Boracay hugged the headlines but the level is now well below dangerous threshold (so don't worry and just enjoy the beach).
That's the sad truth about Boracay's green algae as explained by science.
By the way, those stuff is actually algae, not green seaweed nor green moss.

Recommended Boracay Holy Week Events/Activities?
A pilgrimage to the Grotto or Willy's rock:Boracay's famous landmark at Station 1 should form part of Boracay Holy Week activities for a Catholic on vacationIdeally, Holy Week in Boracay should be like this for Catholics but Boracay is actually teeming with "millions" of people spending the long vacation there including showbiz stars and celebrities.
Tutubi doesn't like the crowds and prefers off-the-beaten-track destinations. He doesn't see himself going back to Boracay in the near future out of his own pocket.

Boracay ATV Rental Rates (Dune Buggies and Bug Cars too)
14 March 2010
Herewith is updated information on Boracay ATV retal rates provided by a friend of Tutubi who recently went to Boracay.
The best way to get to Mt. Luho is on-board an ATV-- all terrain vehicles -- that can be rented from various ATV rental shots in barangay Yapak (a tricycle ride away from White Beach)
All Terrain vehicles (ATV) parked near Mount Luho Viewpoint. Most of the off-roaders were Koreans and other foreignersThe ATVs are automatic so it only has brakes and accelerators and designed for safe use on rought roads (as long as you drive properly and wear proper safety equipment and features). Usual route is to go up to Mt. Luho and Butterfly Garden of Fairways and Bluewater Golf and Country Club
ATV Rental Companies in Boracay:
G1 ATV (near Eco Village) in Hagdan: P500/hour
Best One Rentals: the largest ATV rental company on Boracay Island, near
Diniwid Beach
Most of the shops can be found near the gate of Fairways and Bluewater. Dune Buggies and ATV rental rates in Boracay range from P300/hour to P1000/hour depends on size of the vehicle.
Do you need a drivers license to drive an ATV in Boracay? Legally, yes, for it's similar to a motorcycle where you're required to have the drivers license inclusion 1. But as always, the law is not enforced strictly.
You may call ATV rental company's telephone number for the latest rates, price discounts and reservations...but if you're on a limited budget and want to explore Boracay's off-the-beaten-track attractions, you can also rent out motorcycles or charter tricycles (per hour rate starts at P100 depends on your haggling skills) for cheap DIY Boracay adventure tours.

Camping, Climbing, Trekking Mt. Pulag Banned Indefinitely
10 March 2010
Although he's hearing news about the beauty of the pristine place up high in the clouds, there are also various reports of environmental destruction particularly the still pervasive kaingin method of slash and burn that destroy the unique habitat and ecosystem of the place.
A recent Inquirer.net news article is both a disappointment and welcome news for Tutubi that a closure of several trails of Mt. Pulag will allow the forest to heal and prevent forest fires.
Tutubi supports such initiatives, much like the closure of Mt Banahaw to trekkers, to allow the forest to heal and protect the mountain from further destruction and also irresponsible tourists and trekkers who leave their trash on the mountain trail (even campers and climbers from some "educated" mountaineering groups do this)
For all you aspiring trekkers and mountain climbers, please be reminded of the old saying: "Take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints"
--
Mt. Pulag National Park, with an elevation of 2,992 meters above sea level, has various trails via Kabayan. Benguet. This off-limits policy will affect the livelihood of tour guides, sherpas, and summer Mt. Pulag tour operators will lose business while this is in effect but the greater good will result in this initiative.

Sabin Resort Hotel, Ormoc, Leyte
09 March 2010
Tutubi was able to visit the place recently and offers a few pictures of the place as well as his observations and impressions of Sabin Resort Hotel but no full-blown review on food, staff and service as he did not actually stay there.
Photos of Sabin Resort Hotel:
Sabin Resort Hotel's swimming pool, really nice, well-lit at night and surrounds the main building where overnight accommodations at the resort lie.
One of the "living rooms" with native furniture in use
Sabin Resort Hotel is a beach front resort, nice sunset but the beach is actually rocky, so don't get your hopes up for a nice beach resort in OrmocReview of Sabin Resort Hotel:
Note: Tutubi only inspected the place and didn't actually stay there (he stayed at OCCCI Hostel in the middle of Ormoc). All he can say is that the swimming pool looks really nice, snakes around the resort facility but the beach, being a beach front resort, is far from being good, no white sand beaches in this part of the world called Ormoc Bay, probably why Sabin is a resort but not a beach resort.
Room Rates: With 60 rooms available, a Superior room start at P1600.00/room while on the upper end is the Presidential Suite at P3800/room. Extra bed at P400/person.
