What happens to Geeks who can't do marathons?

Geeks who can't do marathons, end up doing blogathons. At least, in the case of this geek who broke his left knee years back and had to give up his dreams of being the next Yao Ming.

As a geek and blogger, I thought a blogathon was what I should be doing to help me lose some of that excess baggage, at least that's what I thought when I signed up for it. I mean, forcing myself to stay awake for 24 hours is a good way to catch up on all the blog posts I've been behind on over the past two months, right? And what a good way to finally be in town for 24 whole hours!

Time for buildings to move ahead with technology?

Less than 48 hours ago, Cisco announced its grand strategy for "Smart+Connected Communities", which addresses the need for urban sustainable energy by "providing a network-enabled blueprint for successful smart cities of the future that run on networked information". This starts with the launch of the Cisco Network Building Mediator (NBM).

With more than 20 technology partners onboard this new platform, the Cisco NBM is not so much a competitor to existing building automation systems as a complementary product that provides the "intelligence to interconnect and enable building systems such as heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC), lighting, electrical, security, and renewables over-the-IP network to build smart and energy-efficient buildings of the future".

60-100 copies of Firefox 3.5 being downloaded every second

Mozilla finally launched the long-awaited Firefox 3.5, and within the first 30 minutes of launch, there was almost a million downloads at an average rate of 60-100 downloads per second as seen in Mozilla's real-time public statistics.

Compare this with exactly one year ago where Mozilla broke the world record for the most software downloads in 24 hours, with over 8 million Firefox 3 downloads. I would be pretty confident to say that Mozilla can easily match or even break the record this time round, although the browser landscape has changed somewhat with Google Chrome launched in September 2008.

CNN failed, as seen on Twitter

This geek has always been quite a CNN junkie, and started to get on Twitter more seriously partly because of CNN's flagrant promotion of Twitter, which I never quite understood.

But I switched to BBC since last weekend, the main reason being CNN's lack of coverage for the Iranian protests that resulted in violence. I think the irony is that despite all CNN's promotion of Twitter, Twitterers have created this hashtag #CNNfail and you can see all the tweets on how CNN has failed on the Twitterverse here.

Video Games Live! music event finally landing in Singapore next Friday!

I've been feeling a sense of excitement for Video Games Live! the happening gaming music event that has toured more than 10 countries and here in Singapore next Friday on June 19 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium!

If you are a gamer and you don't know what Video Games Live (VGL) is, you ought to be shot. But for the benefit of the non-gamers among us, this is VGL in a nutshell.
