ThunderTree
Ben Evers is a drifter that never stays in one place too long, always hankering to see what’s over the next horizon. His traveling companion—an eagle. He lives by two rules. Mind his own business and always treat women with respect. The first rule stands him in good stead until he meets former Texas Ranger John T. McAllen and his niece Kate Landon. The two are drawing him into their lives and Ben knows from personal experience no good ever comes from getting involved in other folks’ trouble. John T. and his neighbor are caught up in a feud over land and Clary’s daughter. When danger strikes, swift and hard, Ben has a decision to make. Turn his back and ride away from people he’s grown to care about or break his rule of minding his own business, and stay and fight.

Fantastic Characters and Storyline
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2025Very pleasantly surprised. I have read many classic Westerns, and this one really stacks up with the best of them.
The characters are drawn to perfection. No wasted words. Quickly becoming memorable and engaging.
I gave it a chance. Sight unseen. Never heard of the author. But the reviews were solid, and it lived up to their high praise.

Action packed Western
Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2019This cowboy story has it all...range wars, rustling, gun fights, non-stop action...and sweet romance. Ben, a lifetime drifter, with his pet eagle...yes, eagle, rides into town and saves a young woman, Kate, from a group of men. He gets sucked into her family's ranch issues, stops for a month...then longer as the conflict between the two ranches deteriorates.
When the action is over, he tries to ride away into the sunset. You'll have to read the story to discover if he was successful.
I don't usually read this genre, but I couldn't put this one down. The action is well written.
A must read page turner.

Texas, Cattle Rustlers, and a Drifter
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2025If you’ve got a hankerin’ for a good old fashioned Western, this quick novel fits the bill. When young drifter Ben Evers rides across a Texas prairie he comes across a terrible fracas— none of his business— ride on is his first instinct. But when a female is in trouble, doing the right thing is all that matters. Bullets fly and minutes later, the attackers, bad hombres all of them, lay dead on the ground.
And the damsel in distress? Not exactly a damsel, Kate Landon can hold her own he soon discovers. Is it love at first sight? No way, no how… Ben Evers is just passing through. He’s vowed to himself, never get tied down, keep on moving. No attachments, no friends, no woman is going to stop this drifter’s wandering ways. He has only three companions: the great outdoors, his beloved horse, and an eagle that follows him everywhere.
But saving Kate comes with consequences. Her Uncle John T. McAllen is a former Texas Ranger and owner of a Thunder Tree cattle ranch. And now he’s in this drifter’s debt. At the very least a good meal, a bed to sleep on and a few days’ rest seems like a fair payback to Ben Evers. He’ll mosey along after that.
Or so he thinks… Big John needs his help even if he’d never admit it. There are cattle rustlers stealing from his herd. A corrupt, nearby rival rancher has his sights on bringing John T to his knees. A range war is brewing. Pretty soon, this drifter gets roped right into the middle of everything despite every effort not to. Trouble shows up in spades, and Ben Evers does not shy away from danger.
Effortless prose, outstanding characters perfectly cast, and convincing period dialogue (circa 1870s) make this a fun and easy read. Nothing complicated here, just a straight-shooting story, pure entertainment, no moral gray zones, just frontier justice. This is my fourth foray into the Western world of author Sandra Cox… Recommended.

Wonderful story
Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2023This was truly a wonderful story! Loved the eagle, all knowing and wise when he needed to be. That men could be so greedy as to try & ruin another for just for what he has just blows my mind.

Found it hard to put this down!
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2019This is the second western romance I’ve read by Ms. Cox. I loved “SilverHills” and had high expectations for this story. I was not disappointed and found it hard to put down. Ben avoided all attachments except for his eagle. But on his way to Mexico, he rescues Kate and ends up at her family’s ranch as a hand. He only agrees to stay a month but starts to find himself caring about this family and the ranch. The characters had my heart immediately. Kate’s strength and Ben’s honesty was a good blend, and I started rooting for them right away. Kate’s Uncle John T was a man of principles that ran his ranch and house fairly, while Kate’s friendship with Sarah was endearing. I appreciated Ben and his eagle’s connection. There was plenty of action with cattle rustlers and Kate’s friend was in a bad situation. The descriptions were stunning and put me right on this Texas ranch. I highly recommend this if you love a good western romance!

T. Dar5 out of 5 starsThoroughly enjoyable classic Western
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 19, 2025A great good old-fashioned Western with real cowboys and ranchers which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Ben Evers is a great protagonist, with his unique eagle companion making him just a little bit more special. With strong female characters in Kate and Martha and a Dutton-esque patriarch in the redoubtable John T McAllen, Cox presents a wonderful cast.
If you enjoy action, adventure and wholesome romance, you'll love ThunderTree by Sandra Cox.
