When environmental artist Tom Deininger was a kid, he was told he shouldn’t be swimming in a river because it was polluted. “And that was such a kind of visceral offense,” he shares, “the fact that we have polluted our waterways to the point where they’re not safe to swim.”
Years later, after seeing things wash up on the beaches during a surf trip to a remote island, trash became his art medium of choice.

Today, Deininger creates optical illusions with discarded trash—old toys and other bits of discarded plastic that he reassembles into anamorphic sculptures—lifelike macaws, hummingbirds, fish, and other animals affected by human pollution across the planet. This CBS Sunday Morning video showcases his work.
