We are setting up a full-day lighting workshop for Saturday the 18th of March.
The idea is to create a link between what is taught in class and what is
necessary for production realization. An invited guest will be heading the workshop,
accompanied by Eric and myself.
Please reply asap to let me know if this is something of interest and if you are available on that date.
Note: I HIGHLY recommend this to all production students...

Everybody’s Welles, a multi-media, solo performance by co-writer/director, Patrice Dubois, about a meek Quebecois film scholar whose life and career are altered by his experience of Welles’s films. It is a piece of theatre that takes up the recurring themes in Welles’s life and œuvre, notably the student/teacher relationship and the search for one’s individual identity within greater society. One could also say that this production draws a portrait of American society from 1915, the year of Welles’s birth, until today. Everybody’s Welles does not pretend to be a definite biography of Orson Welles but rather a theatre docudrama, an evocative homage to Welles where fact and fiction blur.

EVERYBODY’S WELLES POUR TOUS was created by THÉÂTRE PàP in 2003, at Espace GO. The show was invited to the 21th edition of Francophonies, in Limousin, in 2004, before undertaking a tour throughout Quebec.

Patrice Dubois

Actor, playwright, director

For the past 12 years, Patrice Dubois has plied his trade in various ways and in various mediums. He has performed in a number of theatres in Montreal and throughout Quebec, and has taken part in many projects that put the emphasis on playwriting and research. In June 2005, played the role of the lame Richard Premier in the epic Vie et mort du Roi Boiteux, by Jean-Pierre Ronfard, presented within the Carrefour international de théâtre de Québec. He founded Le Groupe Audubon, which focuses on the works of Boris Vian and pataphysics. He is currently working with this company on a collage of texts by Peter Handke which will be presented next fall. On television, he has acted in over a dozen series. For the past four years, he has played the role of Victor Dubé in the series Les Poupées Russes, broadcast on the TVA network. He has taken part in the dubbing of some one hundred films and television shows and has narrated documentaries, including the series La filière froide, broadcast on Canal D.

Patrice Dubois is co-director of Janvier Toupin Théâtre d’Envergure which will present its fifth show in 2007: a play by François Archambault presented at the Théâtre La Licorne. He has directed several productions, including Betty à la plage presented in 2004 at La Licorne and, most recently, Le songe d’une nuit d’été, with the graduates of the École de théâtre de St-Hyacinthe. He is a 1993 graduate of the theatre program at the Cégep de St-Hyacinthe.

Martin Labrecque

Lighting designer, assistant playwright and director

Martin Labrecque has collaborated on a wide range of projects. Among them are: Théâtre de l’Opsis: Meurtres hors champ, Oreste – The reality show, Je suis une mouette (non, ce n’est pas ça) and L’homme en lambeaux, for which he won the 1999 Masque award for Lighting Design. With Serge Denoncourt, he has worked on: L’habilleur, at Compagnie Jean-Duceppe, Le peintre des madon –for which he won the 2004 Masque award for Lighting Design–as well as Les feluettes, at Espace GO. With Michel Monty at Théâtre La Manufacture, productions include: Gagarin Way, Antarktikos, and Cyber Jack. At Théâtre UBU, with Denis Marleau: Le petit Köchel. With Claude Poissant: Les oiseaux de proie, at Compagnie Jean-Duceppe, Ce soir on improvise and La fausse suivante, both presented at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. With Théâtre PàP: Unity, mil neuf cent dix-huit and Les enfants d’Irène. In dance, he has collaborated six times with Estelle Clareton, notably on the production Monsieur. Variety shows include Nomade and Rain, by Cirque Éloize. In 2005-2006, he designed the lighting for the Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca. He started off the year 2006 by designing the lighting for the Le Malade imaginaire, by Molière, at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. He graduated from the theatre program at Collège Lionel-Groulx, design section, in 1994. He further perfected his skills by taking the Broadway Lighting Master Class, in New York, 1998.

Since its founding in 1978, THÉÂTRE PàP has consistently pursued its mission of promoting the works of new playwrights and creating shows where the artists (playwrights, directors, actors, designers) are invited to join forces and invent a form of theatre that is always renewing itself. Past productions include Les Feluettes by Michel Marc Bouchard, Motel Hélène by Serge Boucher, Les Huit Péchés capitaux a collective creation, Le Goûteur by Geneviève Billette, L’Hôtel des horizons by Reynald Robinson, Le Ventriloque by Larry Tremblay, Unity, mil neuf cent dix-huit by Kevin Kerr, La petite scrap by Dominick Parenteau-Lebeuf, and–recently–Le Traitement by Martin Crimp, co-produced with the Festival de théâtre des Amériques. In all, the company has produced some fifty plays, most of which were written by contemporary Quebec playwrights. i would like you inform you on the "wanta be" group ticket center.
it is now a live journal http://community.livejournal.com/theatretickets/profile setted by jasa baka, sarah tracy and i and could be accessible to all students in the department.

because this may be a lot of work, i was wondering if it might be possible to have some support from the department through a work study position. it would be needed for the rest of this semester and would have to be assured for next year so we can undate it and check if it is a used tool for students. i'm thinking that 4 hours per week would be enough.

montreal has a facinating active theatre community and it would be important to get our students to access as many theatre events as possible for the lower prices in town.

the live journal would post all field trips to dress rehearsals, the prices reductions for theatre students in town, cast lettres, special events like a series of lectures and meeting with different active members of "le beau milieu". the groupticketcenter would also take reservations at theatre student group rates.

i'd like to talk about it and maybe include this idea on the agenda at the faculty meeting on monday 6th.

"Criminals in Love"

Concordia University begins its spring season with Criminals in Love, directed by the new Artistic Director for Geordie Productions, and co-founder of ASM Productions, Dean Patrick Fleming.

Criminals in Love is set in a gritty east sub-division neighborhood of Toronto. Junior faces the uncertainties of his future, as a young man whose family members are involved in crime. His girlfriend, Gail, attempts to encourage Junior to seek a life beyond his dysfunctional family. However, as Junior strives to unlock his fate, his father forces him into a new dubious project. With his girlfriend and another friend as accomplices, Junior faces an internal struggle and the plot leads us to an unexpected twist of fate.

Criminals in Love is George F Walker's first play in the East End Chronicles series, which was awarded the Governor General's Award and the Chalmers Award. The East End Plays explore characters in an environment that define urban lifestyle and attitudes.

As part of the Concordia Association of Students in the Theatre - our mandate is clear - to support, maintain, and facilitate the development of initiatives undertaken by theatre students, alumnus, and faculty that provide unique opportunities to students currently enrolled in the five theatre programs offered at Concordia University.

As a club under FASA (Fine Arts Students A lliance, http://fasa.concordia.ca) , we are allocated a club budget of 1,200$ a year - which we intend to spend every penny of. In the 2005-2006 school year, we are accepting project proposals from students wishing to do undertake various endeavours, which thanks to the FASA budget, as well as our own fundraising efforts, we hope to be able to partially fund. Furthermore, as a facilitating organization - we are here to help theatre students discover the various organizations they can approach in hopes of receiving funding. Our meetings for the winter semester are Wednesday at 4:05 in the CAST lounge (TJ 106) - everybody is welcome to attend our meetings- and if you would like to add something to the agenda, please send an announcement to the chair before the preceding Sunday at 8 PM.

In addition, as our listserve continues to grow, we are pleased to accept various short blurbs from theatre practitioners who are either seeking to promote an upcoming event or wish to have a call for designers/actors/directors/playwrights/stage managers/dramaturges. Prague 2007 will see the PQ and Oistat Edcom collaborate to present the Scenofest at the heart of the Industrial Palace, Výstaviště.

Building on the success of PQ Scenofest 2003, the central hall and additional new spaces will become a venue for student collaboration and activity. Over the 10 days of PQ through workshops, performances, lectures and special exhibitions students from across the globe will experience the unique environment of the Prague Quadrennial.

At the very centre of the PQ Scenofest, The focus will be dedicated to ongoing activity, experimentation and collaboration. The emphasis is to create a sharing interactive hub, a factory of ideas. Students, teachers and practitioners from across the design disciplines, will work together to create continually evolving workshops and installations of work from all performance design backgrounds. Workshop spaces, exhibition spaces and performance venues will provide the participants with opportunities to share in cross cultural and disciplinary activities.

With a shorter PQ lasting only 10 days it is hoped that many students may be able to stay for the whole of the PQ and be able to remain actively involved throughout.

The PQ Scenofest Theatre will host up to 27 design led performances.
An additional theatre space near the main PQ will provide a controlled lighting and sound workshop base, and allow for master classes in sound and lighting in a controlled environment and evening presentations of student workshops.
A student café will provide an informal meeting place an information centre and computer drop in facility
The PQ Scenofest will share and collaborate in creating a series of Design Excellence lectures in a purpose built lecture theatre based within the National Exhibition, which will occupy both the left and right halls.
The PQ Scenofest also hopes to create site-specific activities that spread out into the centre of Prague itself.

Le Théâtre Incliné a 15 ans!

Depuis 1991, le Théâtre Incliné cherche de nouvelles formes et crée des spectacles axés vers une poésie

de l’image. Ses productions visent principalement un public adulte et sa forme théâtrale se caractérise par

l’utilisation de marionnettes, de comédiens et de théâtre d’ombres. José Babin cherche et fouille le théâtre

avec son collègue Alain Lavallée, marionnettiste et joueur d’ombres. Ensemble ils jouent aux alchimistes

et créent des alliages singuliers. Les résultats de leurs recherches sur la forme théâtrale - notamment sur

un alliage mime corporel et marionnette et sur la dramaturgie de la lumière - leur ont valu la

reconnaissance de leurs pairs et des invitations régulières comme formateurs pour professionnels des arts

de la scène (Québec, France, Japon et Nunavut). Leurs spectacles sont diffusés au pays ainsi qu’en

Europe et en Asie.

Every winter for the past five years, Montreal has been celebrating oral literature, text performance and spoken word. This year’s Festival Voix d’Amériques (FVA), presented by Les Filles électriques, takes place February 10 to 17, 2006 with special guest Tomson Highway.

Main-stage shows each night at La Sala Rossa

Main-stage events in English include the opening show in which Tomson Highway invites us, at long last, to join him and old friends for an evening of memories.
We’ll celebrate St. Valentine’s Day with Love and Kisses from Vancouver, with some of the West Coast’s best spoken-word artists.
On the French side, Body and Soul 3 presenting seven “natural-born performers” whose words and bodies eat up the stage.
The Combat contre la langue de bois will go into its 2nd round, challenging ten celebrity guests to express their deepest thoughts without tripping over their tongues.
The Jolis garçons cabaret will introduce seven brilliant, beautiful, happy young gays delivering intelligent (or impertinent!) poetry in glam style.
Semeurs de troubles opens the festival doors to poetry’s next generation—young voices already speaking out loud and clear!
For the first time, the FVA will devote an entire evening to the art of storytelling with Histoires de pêche—big fish stories about the one that got away.
The FVA will end in some delirious general rejoicing at a closing-night show with Loco Locass and guests.

Tickets for FVA main-stage events ($15 and $20) are available at the Billetterie Articulée (514-844-2172) and at the door on the night of the show, starting at 6:30 pm. Doors of La Sala Rossa open at 7:30 pm.

What an excellent idea! Now all we need is Paypal, secret handshake, membership cards and...perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself.
I don't know if I can make any of the dates listed but I wanted to write and say I am excited to see the site. Maybe we could post pictures from the show too? And from the concordia shows? Maybe Manon and Samantha have images they could post for us all to see....
