FANFICTION: (1) Still reading Word of Honor, and some The Untamed and The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity fanfic. (2) Added more SGA stories to my author account on Squidge Archive.

BOOKS: I have Surviving the Evacuation Part 9: Ireland by Frank Tayell still to start reading one of these days.

MOVIES:

Aftershock (2010):

The movie is to commemorate the Tanshang earthquake in China in 1976 where more than 240,000 people lost their lives. It starts the day of the earthquake and follows a family - a husband, wife and twin children, boy and girl. The mother has to make a terrible decision as she is told she can save only ONE of her children. She even lays the body of her daughter next to the child's dead father. Her son loses his arm in the earthquake but he grows up to become a successful businessman. In the meantime, the daughter was only unconscious and when she comes around she is surrounded by the dead. She wanders off in shock and is eventually taken to the makeshift orphanage and adopted by a military officer and his wife. She doesn't speak at first and says she recalls nothing of that day. Life goes on and she eventually reveals to her adopted father - decades later - that she recalled everything, including her mother choosing her son over her daughter - her. Another earthquake in Sichuan 32 years after Tanshang brings her back to China and while resting during the dig for survivors she overhears a one-armed man talking about losing his father and twin sister, and how his mother had been forced to make a terrible choice or lose both of them... and so she is reunited with her mother and brother.
The earthquake scenes at the beginning are terrifying. The movie overall has a number of tearful moments but it missed that important moment of the brother and sister realizing who each was, jumping from him telling his story to her going 'home' to Tanshang with him to meet their mother. Otherwise it was very well done and worth watching.

Still going through this very slowly just to admire Zhang Zhehan and the pretty costumes/set designs as I do not understand more a few words of Chinese :D

Pro Bono:

A Korean court drama with a lot of black humor about a Judge who is framed for taking a bribe and ends up having to resign and become a Pro Bono lawyer for a large legal firm. He manages to win lots of interesting cases of weak people fighting powerful bodies as he works to uncover the person who framed him and bring them to justice. Highlight for spoilers! I love the ending where he realizes that THIS is the work he wants to be doing, and when the big firm disbands the Pro Bono team he employs them all in a new private Pro Bono firm.

Veil of Shadows:

Not seen any episodes this week but I plan to sit back and watch some this evening

FANFICTION: Still reading Word of Honor, and some The Untamed and The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity fanfic. Really enjoying a series by chi-chi-chimaera (gestat1). First part is Qi Ding Gui. It's an AU where Zhou Zishu is caught after placing the first of the seven nails. The nail is removed and he is now under heavy guard but suicidal. Han Ying helps him escape and they go on the run together, eventually entering Ghost Valley to avoid the Window of Heaven (Tianshuang) who are on orders to bring him back to his cousin, Prince Jin. Despite drinking the Meng Po soup and losing memories he still retains basic principles and that means he cannot avoid eventually catching the eye of the Ten Devils - and the Guzhu, Wen Kexing, especially. It's intriguing and well written... though I do have a tendency to skim over any sex scenes.

BOOKS: I still have Surviving the Evacuation Part 9: Ireland by Frank Tayell to start reading one of these days.

About the Tanshang earthquake in China - still to watch

Greenland 2: Migration:

Not sure what to say about this. As a sequel it was very good with lots of great disaster scenes but it was still formulaic in that the 'Garrity family' manages to survive every disaster while those with them die... and the disaster always happens to THEM. Must be the unluckiest people ever. Basic story: their safe haven in Greenland is no longer safe as tectonic plate movement has caused lava flows and destabilized the bunker. A doctor (of physics) says the original Clark meteor crater could theoretically now be a luscious safe haven with clean air and plantlife. They decide to take a chance on it as they believe their son deserves a chance to grow up breathing fresh air etc. Highlight for spoilers! John Garrity is dying, probably from radiation exposure. He knows he doesn't have more than 6 weeks to live so he is desperate to get his wife and son to safety. He dies having seen the safe haven crater is real but never reaches it.

Not Without Hope:

Based on a true story about 4 friends who go on a fishing trip off Clearwater, Florida but get caught in a storm. The 21ft boat capsizes and they are clinging on in cold water. All of them played American Football and two were currently active professional players who were all muscle. That turned out to be a disadvantage as once their body temp dropped they had no fat reserves to help against hypothermia. In all they were lost at sea for almost two days in a terrible storm. It was very well done. Highlight for spoilers! *Wiki Blurb: Not Without Hope is a 2025 survival thriller film directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Zachary Levi as Nick Schuyler, the real-life sole survivor of a 2009 boating accident that took the lives of NFL football players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith as well as Will Bleakley. Personally, I think what saved Nick was the jacket his mother had insisted he wear that the others laughed at. It trapped some of his body heat and protected him against the chill of the water and wind.

Bon Appetit, Your Majesty:

One of those dramas where, in this instance, a Lady Chef is transported back in time to the Joseon era after reading lines in an ancient cookbook and becames the head cook for the King. The King had been labeled a tyrant in history but she manages to turn him into a better king. However, his uncle hates that his nephew became king instead of him and plans to overthrow him. In the meantime, the chef has to prepare all sorts of gourmet meals to appease the king AND others, trying to avoid conspiracies as she tries to recover the magic cookbook that could take her back to the future. Overall it was fun (in a black humor way) but also had political machinations, rebellions, fights, treason, murder attempts but through it all they fall in love. Highlight for spoilers! The cookbook she is searching for turns out to be a book the king is writing as he describes all the amazing food she has cooked for him. In the end she dies to protect him after the rebellion dethrones him, and the cookbook sends her back to where she is in a coma in hospital. Her internet search says the dethroned king's body is never found. Several months later, having tried but failed to find a way back to her beloved king he turns up, having found a way to be reunited with her in the future - how is not explained but I guess... magic.

Bridgerton:

I decided to watch this. Overall it was good if not a little frustrating at times. Basically it was a re-telling of the Cinderella story but with the Bridgertons along with all the subterfuge, hidden motives, politics, joy and grief. I felt sorry for Francesca, who lost so much when her husband died suddenly. If there is another season then I wonder if they will explain why her husband's cousin, who professed to be Francesca's friend, suddenly upped and left without a word.

FANFICTION: I've mostly spent the past few weeks reading Word of Honor, and some The Untamed and The Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity fanfic. I've used many of these as recs on my comment_bingo table :)

BOOKS: I still have Surviving the Evacuation Part 9: Ireland by Frank Tayell to start reading one of these days.

MOVIES: None this week but I have a movie lined up to watch called Aftershock (2010) about the Tanshang earthquake in China

FAN and OFFICIAL VIDS: No new fanvids seen this week

TV SHOWS: Reading so much Word of Honor fanfic has had me rewatching particular scenes and music vids.

Ban Shu Legend:

Still slowly making my way through this purely to look at the prettiness of Zhang Zhehan as Wei Ying as there are no subtitles and I don't understand Mandarin Chinese :) It's a bit of a weird love entanglement. Ban Shu loves Wei Ying (and he possibly loves her too) BUT he was engaged to her presumed dead sister. Meanwhile, a high official in the Empress's court - possibly a relative - loves Ban Shu, and someone else loves HIM.

Bridgerton:

Well, I made a start on the latest season but didn't get through more than 15 mins of the first episode as I wasn't in the right frame of mind. I will go back to it though when I'm ready.

Oh My Venus:

A Korean modern romance-comedy about an overweight woman who meets an elusive trainer by chance when she faints on a plane and manages to 'convince' him to help her regain her former (High School) figure. I like that her transition wasn't an overnight success and she had to work REALLY hard and diet. The comedy comes from all the ways she tries to wriggle out of doing exercises and eating 'grass'. In the course of all this the aloof trainer turns out to be the grandson and sole heir to a large medical group. He was sick as a child - bone cancer in his leg - that required multiple surgeries and is a doctor in his own right. I like how her positive attitude and belief in herself kept her going. It wasn't all plain sailing but had a fun ending.

Pursuit of Jade:

I finished watching this (40 episodes) and overall it was really good with lots of action and romance and political shenanigans in Ancient China. The leads were both very good, as were the supporting characters. I love Changyu's strength - not just physical but emotional too. I like how she battled problems head on and I'm glad the writers kept her that strong right to the closing moments. Lots of good moments in there. It's certainly a series worth watching.

Veil of Shadows:

I made a start on this new Cdrama that is in the same universe as Fangs of Fortune and The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity. So far it is visually gorgeous with lots of great fantasy martial arts sequences.

Ban Shu Legend:

This is one of Zhang Zhehan's first roles. He plays Wei Ying, a general who is injured and so retires to be a teacher in the imperial palace. Ban Shu is the younger sister of the girl he was supposed to marry and she becomes a teacher of the girls. As I cannot find an English Sub anywhere I am mostly guessing on what is going on but otherwise just enjoying the costumes and all the pretty people! I'm only watching an episode now and then so I'm not even halfway through yet.

Pursuit of Jade:

Having completed my Fandom5K assignment I was free to check out a new drama that a lot of folks have mentioned as being pretty good and I'm now up to episode 18. It's about a General - The Maquis of Wu'an - and a young woman, Fan Changyu, who is a pig butcher by trade, following in the steps of her recently murdered parents. It's a time of war and she finds a man half buried in the snow and carries him home - she is VERY VERY strong. For important reasons he hides his true identity calling himself Yan Zheng. He agrees to be her matrilocal husband while he is healing from his wounds (marrying into HER family rather than the traditional way of the woman marrying into the man's family) to help her out of a situation where she was going to lose her home due to a greedy male relative. Yan Zheng leaves not long before war comes to her town of Lan'an. Many of the people she knew are slaughtered during an attack on the town by a psycho heir apparent using a massive group of bandits as his soldiers. During the massacre where she manages to save a number of people by hiding them in the cellar and luring away the bandits, her young sister (Fan Changning - 4 years old) goes missing.

She heads out to find her sister and also Yan Zheng who she believes was conscripted into the army. Unknown to her the Psycho has her sister, believing she is the daughter of the Maquis of Wu'an. Another excellent battle scene where 'Yan Zheng' gets Changning back safely.

Lots of mishaps, some amazing fight sequences and tragedy. Fangyu has started making a name for herself and with The Pig Butcher Squad by saving stolen children, stopping enemy scouts and felling a huge General from the opposing army using only her butcher knives and her martial arts in a fight I had to rewind several times as it was so well done. I'm at the part where she has finally realized that Yan Zheng is actually The Maquis of Wu'an. Now I'm off to find out what happens next!

9-1-1:

Now I have Filefactory back I downloaded the episodes from (coincidence) 911 onwards and started watching.
(911) I love how the Eddie-Abigail plot turned out to be a stalker of a different kind! I agreed with Hen's concerns about dealing with the stress of her job and then a freak accident being the universe telling her she is truly strong enough to be a paramedic. The batchelor auction was interesting, as was the bidding and the summary spoken by Hen about growing and changing.
(912) Interesting one about relationships - marriage, divorce and getting together and how that affects the people around you. Otherwise it was a bit MEH
(913) Buck and Eddie on the road trip from Hell. He really should have forced Edie to eat as he was HANGRY in that diner! When it was Buck missing rather than Eddie I had a strong feeling the three local guys were not the ones who did it. Overall it was a good episode but a little out of character with the argument between them in the diner but I guess the writers needed it heated to make it believable to the Sheriff that Eddie could have killed Buck.
(914) Amusing and sad episode with the couple and the house from Hell... I hope they were insured for it burning down! I understood Sue's decision to choose Maddie and the reason was so valid as Josh would end up overwhelmed by taking on every task rather than delegating. I disliked the Buck PTSD subplot and really hate the sloppy cliche writing of making Buck a substance abuser. That plot has been done to death on practically every show and even before on this one - Bobby and his alcoholism. It feels like the show is running out of ideas if it is resorting to old cliches and rehashing old plot ideas.
(915) I'm glad Athena allowed that man to die without knowing the truth that his killer was his estranged son. Also glad they did not string out the Buck drug issue and it was nice to see everyone pitching in to help him get through the worst of the withdrawal. I like May and Ravi together so I hope that works out.
(916) Very good episode and I liked how they showed how each of the 911 calls from that building came about, letting them figure out where to look for the source of all the calls in a hidden room in the basement. I was worried the 'bad smell' was a dead body - sick child actually dying - but it was likely all those people huddled together with no water to wash and toilets to flush. At one point I was worried it was that newbie Sam who had caused it all - maybe turned off the alarm. That detective sounds like he might be part of the human trafficker ring.
(917) I knew that Det Hooks would turn out to be crooked. As for the Buck story line with Theo... Hmmm... I hope he does not make the mistake of 'adopting' Theo as the kid is a mini-tornado/disaster. Hopefully there are grandparents who will take the kid instead.
(918) Season 9 finale did not leave on a cliff hanger for once! Lots of great action and, yes, I do adore May and Ravi. Loved the Serpico reference that might have flown over the heads of a younger generation! I was glad Eddie's dad is going to help Esteban so he is not sent back to Mexico, especially after all he did to protect and save the others after being left for dead in that basement. Highlight for spoilers! Love that Athena has 'stepped out of the car' and is now a Detective. So glad Eddie did not die - I was dreading that scene where they were all hugging and Buck asks... Where's Eddie? I had to pause playback and gather courage in case this is the season 9 shock ending like losing Bobby last season. Thankfully Eddie pulls through.... and is now not the only single father on the squad. Yes, Buck is adopting his biological (sperm donation) son. Guess I'll have to wait and see how it all pans out next season.
