Eric ran a hand down Mike’s tear-stained cheek, trying to calm the shorter eighteen year old down. Pale blue eyes met dark brown ones as the wind howled like a pack of wolves circling around them. Mike was torn between giving Eric one last kiss and running as far away from him as possible, while Eric wanted to hold Mike forever and pretend like he didn’t have to leave.

This was too much for the both of them to handle so soon and so fast - it wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair that Edward and Bella didn’t have to leave each other forever; wasn’t fair that they had to keep their relationship a secret from everybody while Bella and Edward flaunted theirs.

Neither of them could talk, but they didn’t need to. Eric’s lips were close to Mike’s as he tried to kiss him goodbye. It was just too much.

Eric pulled away from Mike and ran off to his car, leaving Mike standing, dazed, on the beach. Teary blue eyes watched Eric leave, knowing that this would be the last time they ever saw each other; knowing this would be the last memory they had of each other.

It was supposed to be this way… but then, why did both of them feel so bad about it? It was ‘complicated’, Eric had said, ‘but it’s supposed to be this way… it’s better this way’. Mike didn’t want to agree, but he knew Eric was right. They weren’t supposed to be gay, they were supposed to be straight and get married and have a bunch of kids - that’s what guys were supposed to do in the Yorkie and Newton families.

It took Mike an hour to get back home, and by then the only thing he wanted to do was curl up under his covers and sleep forever.
