Fear not, however -- we have to make an excursion tomorrow morning and can check the mailbox again on the way back to the hotel.

And bought some scrubs. OK, they look mundane (that will slowly get fixed). I have a Green Top with Purple trim, and Purple Pants. I also found a darker purple scrub hat (with my long hair, it is necessary), and a badge holder and a watch on a purple necklace.

Now, how do I get a name badge?

I just finished my set of the scary eyelash scrubs.

bovil's were green, mine are turquoise with the funky "witchdoctor rocket" fabric for the pockets and detail bits.

The scrubs pants are done. Previous notes on the pattern and construction still apply.

The scrubs pants pieces are in two sections on the paper; they have to be assembled. Not really a big deal. It helps to have a relatively large cutting surface, though.

Instructions are rock-solid. Follow them carefully. There are some weird bits, like setting the inset pockets first and then cutting away the excess, but you'll understand why after you do it.

Setting the waist elastic (2" elastic, which it says on the outside and in the instructions, I don't know where I got the idea of 1/2") is a bit of a nuisance. I got ribbed "no-roll" elastic, but that's a bit too strong to set in easily. It does, though, make for a sturdy waistband. Regular elastic should stretch and set more easily.

So, yeah. Definitely happy with this pattern. It's designed for wovens, but it worked OK with the strange knits I was using. It goes together pretty easily, and there's a lot of detail and opportunity for modification and embellishment.

Having finished the top, I've got a few more opinions on the Kwik Sew scrubs pattern.

If you're looking for the classic v-neck scrubs pattern with the pointed "v" this is it. If you want the square-bottom "v" look for other patterns.

The pattern is easy to cut out. The layout is actually pretty efficient, even on napped/directional fabrics.

If you're doing something like I did, (front and back only in the primary material), it's a bit more wasteful. Front and back pieces are cut on the fold, and you can salvage a fair amount of your body fabric if you fold just enough to fit the pattern pieces instead of folding in the center.

The pattern is OK in knits, even if it's not designed for knits. With a slinky knit (like I used) you need to pin the crap out of the seams before stitching, but that's as bad as it gets.

The directions are rock-solid.

There's a lot of topstitching and understitching, but it really helps the structure of the garment.

For the next top, I'm going to fiddle with the breast pocket a bit. I think with a bit of modification, I could make a wand pocket for a 10-12" wand work there on a guy's scrubs.

Pants next (although I still need to get some of the right elastic).

Some notes on Kwik Sew #2861

So we decided to start with Kwik-Sew #2861 for the scrubs. They also publish a Misses' pattern, #2807 sized XS-XL and a Women's pattern #3201 sized 1X-4X.

The Kwik Sew scrubs patterns are all designed for woven fabrics. This pattern may be a total bust with the knit that I'm trying, but it's worth taking a chance on.

I've cut pattern pieces lengthened for me out of tru-grid, but that's all that's done so far.

Early notes?

The pattern sheets are fairly sturdy white paper, none of that wimpy tissue that tears at every glance.

Size grading lines are all color-coded in shades of blue and red. All edges are clearly marked. Front pieces (shirts and pants) list the maximum dimension of the finished garment at chest/bust, waist and hips to give you an idea how much ease the garment has.

The pattern layouts are designed to account for nap, one-way design and shading.

So far it's looking pretty good. If it doesn't work well with the eyelash, I've got alternative scrubs patterns that are designed for knits.

I've just cleaned the Vallco Jo-Ann's out of green and blue. The good thing is that it's now been two stores I found this on the clearance rack, and there's plenty of purple, lavender and orange on the racks at both the Stevens Creek (west of Vallco) and Blossom Hill (south San Jose). Green definitely exists (it's kind of a celery green, pretty bright).

But check out the other area Jo-Ann's... you'll probably find more there.

Pinafore Pattern?

Anybody know a good pinafore pattern they like? I'm going Real Old Fashion with the Apron, Bib and No over the shoulder bib strings. Though If one has bib strings I could just not use them.
Yes, I am planning to Pin it on. Whether they show or I use magic velcro, I haven't decided. But it definitely will Not have straps over the shoulders. That is way too modern.

Went shopping. Picked up some more scrubs patterns:

I'm leaning toward the Kwik Sew pattern; it's got the most detailing on it and the most opportunities for embellishment; we'll see how it actually goes together.

While we're at it, anybody got any ideas on modifications for the scrubs? flotsomnjetsom has already suggested a wand pocket, of course, but what other ideas do y'all have?

Let's start talking Scrubs patterns.

flotsomnjetsom mentioned Butterick B4946: Top & Dress, Belt, Skirt & Pants, Hat & Ponytail Holder on her journal when she came up with the idea.

I've got some McCalls scrubs patterns from a few years ago. It looks, though, like what's left are two sets:

I've also got a discontinued McCalls pattern, #9359.

I've got a Burda scrubs pattern, but it looks like it's been discontinued. Burda doesn't show any scrubs patterns on their website now.

I don't remember if I've got a Kwik-Sew scrubs pattern, but we've been really happy with their patterns, and they publish scrubs patterns

Anyone else got patterns to suggest?
