Missing mailmen and shrinking house

Hi, I am having alot of trouble remembering a story I once read and I was wondering if it might sound familiar to anyone. The story is about a mailman who moves to a new city for a new job. This particular town has had three mailmen in as many months. No one knew what happened to the missing mailmen. The new mailman soon encounters a house on his route that he doesn't want to go near. It is the last house on a dead end street. Every day that he sees the house it appears to be getting smaller and smaller. I remember that he discovers that the mailmen all disappear because of this house. At the end the mailman disappears with the house. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me save my sanity.

1408: The Movie

so i just happened to watch the movie for the second time last night. it's memorable and haunting, but scary? nah. i still liked, tho. there's a lot of scenes in it that i liked, but my favorite one was where he got out of the window and climbed onto the ledge and started walking across, and then found out there wasn't another window to climb into. i also liked the Dante's Inferno reference of the 9th level of hell when the room was frozen. sad that he died at the end, tho. i guess there really is no way out of that room :(. anyways, read the book or watched the movie? let me know what you think of it. also, any ides of how you might try to escape that room if you were trapped in it? if i were him, i would've gotten a long piece of rope, and tied it to something sturdy in the room, threw the rest of it out the window, and climbed down the rope all the way to the ground. and hey, if that doesn't work, then i don't know what the hell would.

What's Stephen King's role in today's publishing industry? Is he still the uber-talent that launched him to thriller fame? I'm curious what you all think? Do you see him differently?

Under the Dome

I just finished it about an hour ago, in audio. Anyone got it? Anyone finished it yet? Thoughts? Favorite characters? Anything else?

I am, as usual, in love. It took me a while to warm up to it and it was pretty slow at times, but as King said in the author's note, he tried to make it 'a book that would keep the pedal to the metal' and I think he succeeded. I lost quite a bit of sleep reading and haven't been very in touch with the world for almost a week, and I'm probably going to start all over again tonight with my best friend. I'm continually amazed by his character development, I don't think I know of any other author who writes more relatable and likable characters (I think Rusty is my favorite of this bunch, but Sloppy Sam and Chef are up there too, I love the unlovables).

Now to mope in my melancholy and wait for the next masterpiece :)

Aside from ipods and mp3 players, they're the latest talked about thing and you've just gotta get that brand spanking new Blackberry that came out or you'll feel outed from your friends.

Oh, how ingrained they are in society and our everyday lives that it's almost second nature to have one attached at the ear or hiding inside the pocket of your jeans. People have grown so used to them that they whip them out in the middle of dinner, and the person across from them does the same thing -- it's barely noticed when someone uses them during social events either.

You trust them like the technological best-friend you never had, you freak out when you lose them, and can't handle being without it. It's odd the way this little compact device sways our lives. Do you trust your phone? You must if you spend more time with it than other people.

Maybe, you should trust it less.

Like millions of users you wouldn't think twice of the horror they could release upon you, that it could ever betray you. But that's what the world is about to find out. Someone figured out a way to get to this mindless obsession and habit of ours, they're sending out a signal to cause the most devastating attack that will be known to humanity.

Are you texting now? Are you talking? We hope you know what's coming.

THE SIGNAL AND THE ZOMBIE
GUIDELINES | FAQ | DROP A LINE
PREMADES | DIRECTORY
LOCATIONS | STORYLINE POST
CREDITS

The Dark Half, Just After Sunset, and some interesting connections

So there are a couple things on my mind, and as always I'll try (and probably fail) not to ramble on too much.

1) I just finished "The Dark Half" less than an hour ago (read it all in one day, almost in one sitting) and completely loved it. I pretty much only wanted to mention that to rave about its wonderfulness, and also the fact that I am in love with Stephen King's ability to get right to the center of things. The way he talked about Thad wanting to write the book with Stark, for one, the way they mirrored each other and laughed together and how Liz said that a part of him loved Stark for his darkness. But mostly at the very end, when the sherriff was thinking how people were dead, one even bludgeoned to death with his own arm, and it was Thad's fault even if it wasn't fair to think that, he was wondering if Liz would ever want to get close to him again knowing that Stark had come from him. SK does it in "From a Buick 8" too, when he describes the monster's thoughts as they're trying to kill it. I don't know, I haven't seen any other writer bring those things out so clearly and it kind of fascinates me. =]

2) "Just After Sunset". I wanted to know if anyone's read it and if so, what you thought. Specifically which stories you loved and which you hated. I was pretty disappointed overall, which is a very sad thing for me to say, but I just didn't feel most of it. I did love "N", and "In a Very Tight Place" was a favorite even though it was absolutely disgusting and made me want to skip over certain parts, but really "The Cat from Hell" is the only other one I even liked. There were a couple others that were reasonably good ("The Gingerbread Girl" being one of them), but I just felt like it was lacking I guess. And the 9/11 stories did nothing at all for me.

3) Not related to any specific book, but I've been noticing as I read that SK likes to play little games with his books. At least that's what they seem like to me. Like the connection between Dolores Claiborne and the girl in "Gerald's Game", I can't remember her name now, when they see each other in their vision or whatever it is. And then "Hearts in Atlantis", Ted and the low men in yellow coats being part of the Dark Tower stuff. And less noticeably, in "Man, We Just Couldn't Stop Laughing" (which is one of my favorite King stories ever by the way), one of the card players is named Kenny Auster, and in "Bag of Bones" he's the guy who lives on the TR, with the dog named Blueberry. I'm sure there are others I don't know about, do you guys know of any? Not very important, just something I find interesting and kind of amusing.

Sorry for the length. I always ramble about King.

Castle Rock help?

Hey there,

I've been a SK fan for about 6-7 months now, so I'm still a bit of a newbie. What I have read of his is:

The Stand
Cell
Christine
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
Desperation
The Regulators
Thinner
Rage
Dark Tower books 1-3 (And I'm currently reading book 4)

Anyway, one of my friends was really into Stephen King books as well. Unfortunatley she passed away so I can't ask her, but I remember her saying to read the Castle Rock books. Which books are they? I remember the town of Castle Rock being mentioned in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.... is that book part of the series? Is there even a series... like a particular order that I should read certain books in?
I have no idea and would prefer to read them in the 'right' order so that I don't miss anything.

Also, based on the books I have read, and loved, which other SK books would you recommend? I ended up putting IT down because it seemed so drawn out. I'll probably go back to it but not yet.

Any help would be appreciated! It's a little confusing trying to navigate through all the titles! xx

The Marsten House

On the right you could look down into the town proper--Ben's first view of it. On the left, the Marsten House. He pulled over and got out of the car.
It was just the same. There was no difference, not at all.He might have last seen it yesterday.
The witch grass grew wild and tall in the front yard, obscuring the old, frost-heaved flagstones that led to the porch.Chirring crickets sang in it, and he could see grasshoppers jumping in erratic parabolas.
The house itself looked toward town. It was huge and rambling and sagging, its windows haphazardly boarded shut, giving the house that sinister look of all old houses that have been empty for a long time. The paint had been weathered away, giving the house a uniform gray look."

Stephen King, 'Salem's Lot

I had a phone conversation with my daughter this morning and we talked a little bit about Stephen King, as she'd just finished reading On Writing. As it often happens, we then began discussing how various parts of his various books had struck us upon first reading this or that passage. I brought the above passage up because I'd been thinking of it since yesterday afternoon.

There's an abandoned old house on a small rise (which around here--central Indiana--is amazing in itself) that we pass whenever we leave our home to go anywhere. You can see the back of this old place from the road and I'd often told myself I'd get up there to photograph the place. I finally did that yesterday, turning off the main county road where it can be seen, down a gravel road that wound around the empty fields. Not much like Maine, or anyplace in New England (where I am from) as I so often observe grumblingly to myself. Not so much, that is, until I passed a small copse of bare trees and saw the front of the house up on its hill. Because King is pretty entrenched in my subconscious, my first thought on seeing the house up there was 'Oh, god, that's the Marsten House!'.

Of course, it's not, imaginary house or no. It's too small and it's not a monstrous Victorian, yet at first glance and from a distance I saw it anyway. I plan on going back in summer and autumn to re-shoot it if it's not torn down by then or used for a practice fire by the F.D.

Click the cut to take a look:

The rest of the shots are in this set on Flick'r:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gairid/sets/72157613366866938/

Has anyone else here seen a place that took you right back to one of King's tales?

Scariest SK books

I noticed that no body has posted here for a while and I'm curious about something from other SK fans so I thought I'd ask.

What's the scariest Stephen King book that you've read and why? So far I've read Rage, The Stand, Cell, Christine and the Dark Tower books 1-3. I'm reading IT and Desperation (I'm going to read the Regulators straight after) at the moment and I have to admit that Desperation is really giving me the creeps! I love it though. I think it's because it makes me wonder 'what if...' and because we (generally) put trust in cops.

So yeah I was wondering what creeped you out and why

Hi! Just joined this community yesterday, figured I'd do one of these introduction thingies.

I'm Chelsea, 19, live in Oklahoma, aspiring author, current slacker. Work with visually (and very slightly mentally) impaired kids, some in a science class and one after regular school hours, working on Braille and general reading comprehension. Planning to attend a liberal arts college and major in English if I ever get my life together enough.

I started reading Stephen King when I was ... nine. Seriously. Tried reading It, but didn't make it very far. Read Needful Things when I was ten, but I don't think I understood much because I hardly remember anything about it now. Lol. Just recently got a massive collection of his books, so now my 'have read' list looks like this:
It
Christine
Carrie
From a Buick 8
Skeleton Crew
Night Shift
Four Past Midnight
Everything's Eventual
Nightmares and Dreamscapes
Dreamcatcher
Bag of Bones
Desperation
Misery
The Man in the Black Suit
Blood and Smoke
The Shining
Eyes of the Dragon
Gerald's Game
The Long Walk
Rage
Pet Sematary
Lisey's Story
Cell
Duma Key
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
Hearts in Atlantis

Wow, didn't realize the list was so long. I'm currently reading Dolores Claiborne, and there's still so much to read. I'd be interested to know what your favorites/least favorites are, so maybe I can get some sort of idea of where to go next. I'm saving the Dark Tower books for last, since they're so long. And for the record, Carrie is my absolute least favorite, and I couldn't even begin to try to pick a favorite, but Bag of Bones and It are very near the top of my list.

Cheers. Awesome to have found a community dedicated to one of the many loves of my life. xD

Hi everyone!

I recently joined this community and I thought I would introduce myself.

I'm 26 and live in Mobile, AL. I really hate this city, mostly because of the humidity and over-abundance of "soccer moms." I'm attending the University of South Alabama, getting my second B.A., this time in Psychology (my first was in Philosophy). I love to read! My friends get frustrated with me because I'd rather stay home on the couch with a good book than go out to a bar. I also like video games and anime. I'm a pretty big nerd and am totally okay with that! :)

I started reading King in middle school. There was a copy of Misery on our bookshelf and I thought it looked interesting. I tried to read several King books after that, such as the Shining and Insomnia, but they really freaked me out and I didn't finish them. I rediscovered Stephen King in college, and since then have read: The Dark Tower series, The Green Mile, Hearts in Atlantis, Insomnia (it wasn't as scary the second time ^_^), Misery, and The Mist. That list seems awfully short, but I plan on expanding on it soon by reading The Talisman. I had to take a break after The Dark Tower books because I read them all in less than two months.

I look forward to participating in this community and.. um... hi!!

Hey all, another newbie here. Been reading Mr. King's work since I was thirteen-ish and I'm nineteen now. I think the first one I read, under my dad's influence, was Misery. I've read quite a few now, my favourites being The Stand (of course), The Green Mile and Misery.

Anywho, getting to my point... I have just finished watching The Shawshank Redemption (for about the millionth time), and I was wondering, for those of you who have read the short story, think of the movie in general, but particuarly the ever-so-slightly altered ending? (I won't give it away here). Whether or not it was necessary, suitable, etc. :D
I'm a less experienced Stephen King reader but a fan nonetheless. I'm 21 years old and have only just started reading his books. The reason I didn't start earlier was because I didn't like the film adaptations of his work that I'd seen. It led me to believe the books must be crap. How wrong was I?

So far I've only read The Stand and Rage. I loved them both but I got especially obsessed with The Stand. Now I'm reading Cell and loving it so far.

Anyway I'm looking for any tips on what to read next. I hear that a few of his characters make appearances in several books and I dont want to end up confused or backtracking. SO any recommendations as to what order might be best or what books are better than others? Any tips would be much appreciated.
