Even with the smattering of gray at his temples he looks too young and too self assured. Embroidery on the breast of the pale pink apron he wears over his dark blue button up announces him as ‘Sonny.’ Which. Yes, that fits.

“Just looking,” Rafael quips. “I’ll take a coffee if you sell any to go with your small mountains of sugar.”

Sonny looks concerned and then says, “this is a bakery,” like he’s seriously thinking Rafael somehow missed that. “Sugar is kind of our thing.”

An AU where Sonny runs his family's bakery and neither he nor Barba are very good at letting themselves have what they want. Maybe they can figure that one out together.

Rec:

Lots of banter and lots of tender moments in this story. Because they're not working together, Rafael and Sonny's relationship moves relatively normally, until all the drama hits. Italian families, you know? ;)

I love their moments together, and the care and love they have and show for each other. I'm extremely picky about my coffee shops AUs, and this one is one of the best.

This is a wonderful fic featuring my favorite trope: fake boyfriends, only this time, only Rafael is in on the deception, because Sonny genuinely believes they are together.

I love the overall domesticity of that fic, of Rafael playing along and discovering the kind of person Sonny is. Without spoiling you, I have to say that I didn't see the twist coming at all!

This is a very political fic, and yet rereading it now, you can tell it was made in a simpler time, but it's very actual nevertheless. It's also very funny and heartwarming. The rest of the cast features pretty heavily, and Amanda's banter with Sonny, especially, is hilarious.

But mainly, it is a lovely story of a relationship growing despite some pretty serious odds.

Rec:

This was the first fic I chose for this bingo. I was glancing through the tropes, saw "Denial of Feelings", and thought, Oh, In Vino Veritas will be perfect for this.

It's also one of the first fics I read in this fandom, mumble years ago, back when we hadn't even reached 500 fics, and it's one I reread regularly. I love Sonny's cluelessness, and how helping another makes him realize how similar their situation is. I love how Sonny's professional compassion is at the forefront, but that same compassion is utterly lacking in his personal life and spills out in cruelty towards others (Barba, I mean Barba).

A wonderful story of self-discovery and self-acceptance.

Rec:

Robin Hood is one of those writers for whom I had the greatest difficulties selecting just one fic. Luckily, The Landline is both one of my favorites of hers, and a perfect fit for this trope.

We actually don't see much of Carisi's family (or even of Carisi), and they're not, technically Carisis, but their presence and their relationship with Sonny is all that this fic is about. Rafael and Sonny's relationship is disrupted because of them, and they create all the tension in this fic (which is a lot of tension, because Robin Hood's fics don't always end with a HEA.)

It's got a great plot, around a believable case (by show standard, not reality standard). I love how oblivious Sonny is, how long it takes him to realize that, yes, those are sexy feelings. I love the ensemble cast, all the characters gravitating around our favorite couple.

One of the reasons I like Sonny and Barba so much is their complicated relationship with religion, something that really talks to me as a lapsed Catholic. I wanted to explore Sonny's approach to Catholicism here, hence the title. I'm not 100% sure I managed.

I also wanted to explore the theme of "I'm going to fuck you until you realize we're perfect for each other", and I know I nailed that part 😜 I loved writing Rafael's gradual realization of his feelings as Sonny worms his way into his heart.

I received a request for a Barisi drunken Vegas wedding fic, but this literally turned out nothing like I expected it to. I just rolled with it, and I hope it's okay.

Per the bingo's rules, I had to choose one (1) fic by Adrianna, and I agonized a long time over which one.

This one combines one of my favorite tropes (married before dating) with the hurt/comfort that's inherent to all sick fics. Barba quietly takes care of Carisi, even though he's unsure quite how long their new marriage is going to last, and my heart grew three sizes.

This a lovely quiet fic, that leaves you feeling quite happy and contented.

Sonny, on the other hand, had grown up sailing.

Am I stretching the brief with this rec? Yep. Do I care? Nope. (And believe me it won't be the last time 😆)

Rather than having Sonny shadowing Rafael in court, this fic has Rafael shadowing Sonny in a sailing boat. The reversal of roles, of confidence, makes for an original, lovely story. Rafael and Sonny have an easy relationship that speaks of long familiarity, creating a wonderful atmosphere.

A.K.A: Babra said, 'I love you', Sonny said it back like he'd said it a hundred times before, Raf thought there should be more fan-fare, and Sonny just wanted to know which wine paired best with grilled cheese.

Rec:

A perfectly fluffy fic, wherein Rafael thinks he's doing some kind of momentous declaration, and he's really... not. Funny and sweet, and showcasing how perfectly at ease they are together.

alwaysbuddy makes each place come alive, perfectly framing the steps of their relationship.

A wonderful long, slow read.

Hand on his fly, Carisi blinks in confusion, then settles in, back at ease. “Yeah, ‘course. We could at least wait ‘til Friday, when we can talk about it more.” The fly goes up, and for lack of another assignment, Carisi’s hands rest on his narrow hips. “Christ, I wouldn’t know how to explain it.”
“Can’t say I don’t like hearing that,” Barba murmurs, the words emerging warm and low from deep inside him.
“What, my dumbfoundedness?”
“Your awe.”

Rec:

Going off from a good start, because this is one of my favorite fics in this fandom. I've read it a dozen times or two, I read it again in preparation for writing this rec, and it's still the greatest thing ever.

The first thing you notice going in, is how much leslielol loves her characters. There's sheer joy coming off this fic from the first paragraphs on. This fic is bubbling, guys.

Barba and Carisi embark on a serious relationship, and they want, at least for a time, keep it for themselves. Unfortunately they work with detectives, aka observant people. They're not fooling anyone, but their friends are considerate enough not to tell them :D

This is a feel-good fic, one I go back to over and over when I need a little pick-me-up.
