Ukraine got EU candidate status!!!!

This is a moment of history. Only a moment, and yes, symbolic in meaning. But it means a lot.

It feels like vindication. In 2014, one hundred unarmed civilians were shot by the pro-Russian special police on the streets of Kyiv as they protested the decision by Yanukovich to refuse to sign association agreement with the EU.

Those people did not die for nothing. Today's declaration papers are signed in their blood, and the blood of the tens of thousands of people dying all across Ukraine. It is a heavy price.

This is a photo a relative of mine took of an unknown mourner in 2014 in Kyiv, at the memorial to those killed:

The road here has been hard. There's still a long way to go.

comments

Hello!

If I've added you, it's because I've been reading your journal for ages. I know many of us only know each other through our journals, but I've never used filters and after prolongued exposure think I kinda like you all. Feel free to add or not to add at will, there's no issue here. Although I do have some kind of warm and fuzzy feeling about the word 'friends' now.

I wonder how long it will take to get the styles here set up.. *wanders off*

(Note: I'm sheronwrites.tumblr.com.)

comments
