Biological rhythms related to metabolism in Japanese Shorthorn cattle under varying environments and management techniques

Abstract: Plasma insulin (INS), thyroxin (T4 ), glucose (GLU), non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), rectal temperature (RT) and eating behavior were evaluated in Japanese Shorthorn cattle under varying external environments and management techniques. Serial blood collection and assessments of RT and eating behavior were performed over 48 h in the spring, summer, autumn and winter in four female cattle reared under either free-stall and ad libitum feeding (FA) conditions or tie-stall and restricte… Show more

“…However, the causative relationship between the neurogenic stress and pregnancy outcome should be further elucidated. In contrast to bCgA assay system, the commercial kit assaying human CgA, used by previous studies (Ninomiya & Sato, 2011;Ogino et al, 2011), could detect only small changes in the same samples. Because the reference standard peptide used in the human kit is designed according to the human CgA (344-374) peptide, the amino acid identity of the corresponding region in bCgA and the antibody cross-reactivity of this kit might cause discrepancies in assay values compared with those by our assay procedure.…”

“…The plasma bCgA profiles showed various trends among individual animals. It has been reported that the physiological responses against social isolation and transportation stresses does not cause a marked increment of plasma bCgA concentrations in dairy calves (Ogino et al., 2011). In the present study, our assay procedure detected higher plasma bCgA concentrations in two nonpregnant cows (panels a and c of Figure 6) suggesting the presence of certain neurogenic stress factor(s) during early pregnancy period in these cows.…”

“…Activation of the sympatho‐adrenomedullary axis is associated with neurogenic stress such as transport, whereas cortisol secretion via the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal cortex axis is associated with the perception of environmental stress such as animal handling (Mitchell et al., 1988). Although CgA has been suggested to play a crucial role in the stress response based on the results obtained from human and laboratory animal studies, only a few studies regarding bovine CgA (bCgA) have been reported (Ninomiya & Sato, 2011; Ogino et al., 2011). The absence of an assaying procedure for bCgA makes bovine research difficult.…”

Previous studies (Ninomiya & Sato, 2011; Ogino et al., 2011) analyzed serum bCgA concentrations by utilizing the commercial assay kit designed for human samples, although its specificity and cross‐reactivity to bovine samples has not been established.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.
