got to see PIRATES last night!!!
*eeeeeeeeeeee!*

it took me hearing a review complaining about the length of the movie to even *realise* it ran about 3 hours! it never felt that long, at any point during the movie!!!
it *did* tie up a lot of loose ends, and it *did* make me giggle most of the way through, when i wasn't completely agog at the action scenes & effects!

i even *almost* drooled over orlando & keira this time around... he's definitely nummier in pirate garb; likewise she in kimonos...

not gonna post any more about it, as not to spoil it for anyone, but i will strongly urge you to go see this ASAP!

Hi all. I made this messenger bag for one very special Jack Sparrow fan. Savvy? Being quite the Depp fan myself and absolutely *LOVING* Pirates of the Caribbean, I had no problem finding inspiration to make something someone would reaaaally want to wear and ended up outdoing myself and making this bag into more of a work of art than a bag. haha. At least in my opinion :p

I watched both movies (and many more) during the time it took to make it, and all the while thought about how AWESOME it would be to walk around in. (Squeee! I am jealous of whoever gets to. I'm sure you'll enjoy every swashbucklin' minute of it! ^___^ )

Hi! I'm new here, and so in love with the idea of this community.

Just thought I'd post a little criticism and analysis I did of POTC.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
The first film is the best (so far), simply because it was so refreshing and new. We’d never really seen anything like it before. Everything is claustrophobic (the sets and backdrops), giving it a very anamatromic and old movie feel. It’s very staged and old styled. Those old swashbuckler serials.

One of the best things is the characters. Sure, everyone’s in love with Captain Jack Sparrow, the perfect embodiment of the dandy trickster pirate, who you love in his cowardice and selfish ambiguity. He’s a trickster figure in the spirit of Loki, the bodily humor, the playing people against each other, the ambiguity of gender roles. He’s also Sirius Black or Obi-Wan Kenobi, the hero’s avuncular figure and guide into the world of adventure, connecting the hero to the past and the father figure. Another ruling theme with Jack Sparrow is that of the love affair between the Captain and his ship, Jack Sparrow and the Black Peal echo Malcolm Reynolds and Serenity, Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon. The love affair of a man with this ship, his symbol of freedom, escape from the confines of civilization, rules, laws, and the threat of prison. Credit certainly goes to Johnny Depp, who seems to be once again channeling Charlie Chaplin for his physical, silent comedy.

But I got to put a good word in for Elizabeth and Will. Sure they aren’t exactly the most crowd pleasing, but they are plenty fascinating, especially when looking at the theme of piracy. Elizabeth is a great female character. She’s refreshing because she’s not a sex symbol. She’s complex, without being particularly smart, and certainly not perfect. Elizabeth, particularly in the first film, is in love with the idea of pirates, adventure, excitement, and romance. As a noble woman, this idea of freedom in the "lower" world is Romanticized. But Will, as a member of the "lower" world, is in love with nobility. He holds onto the ideals of proper behavior. He holds Elizabeth at arms length, preferring to be a "eunuch", practicing courtly romance rather than a real relationship with Elizabeth. During the course of the film, Elizabeth and Will will realize that the worlds they idealized contain their own restrictions.

I love how we come into the story while it’s already going on, right when Will is being attacked by the Black Pearl because of his medallion. It is this association with pirates that causes Elizabeth to love Will, and also for Will to hate pirates.

But my favorite part of the whole film (and series) is simply just the story and the storytelling style. We leap in in medis res. There are five story lines, a ton of supporting characters, a bunch of complex back story, mystery, Romance, betrayal, mutiny, folk tale (voodoo witches and sea monsters and the undead and curses), a quest and treasure hunt, revenge, murder, complicated relationships (I love the broken friendship between Jack and Barbossa), sexual frustration, identity crises, it’s all so yummy. It all perfectly fits with pirate lore, and it certainly is refreshing.

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest
While DMC isn’t as good as POTC, it certainly adds well to the canon and series. Again, most of the credit goes to the fantastic characters and the actors playing them (and the director giving them that power). The characters are surreal and larger than life, and you just know that the actors are all having a great time, hamming it up while simultaneously giving them depth. Bill Nihy is fantastic as the campy Davy Jones, but shows the harsh cruelty and also the emotional frailty. His movements and mannerisms make the human real under the animation. Johnny Depp is always great, using his knowledge of the slapstick silent comedy greats (Chaplin and Keaten) to fall and prance hysterically. You can just tell that the cast is having a great time, really bringing their characters to the screen, and also just playing in the pirate world. And that kind of love (also seen in LOTR) makes a great film, and also makes the audience have a great time, too.

Will and Elizabeth grow in beautiful complexity, again concerning the pirate themes. You know how when a monkey is threatened, it runs on all four legs? Well, Will’s four legs are being a pirate. He tries to be noble, honest, good. But when he has to save Elizabeth, he’ll resort to being a pirate, even though he sees them as vile creatures morally beneath him. Elizabeth is the opposite. She romanticizes the pirate life and the way they settle things. When she is threatened, though, she resorts to the noble and honest ways ("bloody pirates!") and is exasperated by their behavior. Their fathers play a strong role in this duality, representing their "natural" states. Will’s father is a pirate. Even though he’s forced into it, he enjoys piracy. Elizabeth’s father is a governor, literally a noble. He tries to hold her to the social expectations of a lady. When she’s threatened, she tries to get others to act in that manner. Because of these opposites, Will and Elizabeth are a perfect couple. The problem is that it also constantly pushes them apart by putting them at odds. Neither truly understands the pirate life that seems to control their destinies.

You know there is a problem in their relationship at the end of the first film, because Elizabeth says that Will is a pirate, that that is why she loves him. Yet, he doesn’t see himself as a pirate. Elizabeth is romanticizing Will from the moment she meets him. Will, in turn, romanticizes Elizabeth as a helpless damsel in distress for him to rescue from Barbossa, part of a courtly love to hold at a distance, to act nobly in order to save. Of course, Elizabeth—in the second film—sort of falls for Jack, because he stands for the way she wants to see Will. Jack is a pirate she perceives as being good (of course, Jack does not see himself this way), a man of action that will not be confined by the rules of noble behavior. Of course, by the end of the film, when Jack is truly acting like a selfish pirate (allowing his crew and his ship to be destroyed for his own sake), she really sees that Will is the better man, and more appropriate for her because he is balanced between nobility and piracy, held to a higher ideal. Will—seeing Elizabeth kiss Jack, acting like a sexually free woman, not a lady—is jarringly awakened into seeing her not as a damsel in distress. He instantly believes that Elizabeth is in love with Jack, not that she’s using him. He’ll have to come to terms with that in the next film.</div>

Okay, so I'm new. And I joined because I have some trying matters that I keep thinking about and wanted some intelligent opinions. This is concerning Dead Man’s Chest so I guess I'll Lj-cut it just in case.

So! What is going on with the compass pointing to Jack when Elizabeth holds it? Do you think she really wants Jack?

Also, what can’t Jack make up his mind about? Elizabeth? Being a good guy? What?! Because it was weird when he was giving Elizabeth the compass he just passed it off and left, like maybe he didn’t want her to see it was pointing to her…? And he tried to play it off in the beginning of the movie when he said, “What’s-her-name” when he was talking to Will.

Okay, last thing, what do you think Tia (the "voodoo” lady) was talking about when she said Will had a destiny about him? I guess just looking for Jack? Or something.

If anyone could give any insight, feedback, opinions I’d love to read them!

Disney plans two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels

Disney is planning to film two sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean - and it looks as if Keith Richards will guest star.

The studio aims to shoot both sequels at once and then release them six months apart in 2006.

ComingSoon.net says it has also confirmed from "a very reliable source" that Johnny Depp's wish has come true.

Keith Richards has apparently agreed to play Captain Jack Sparrow's father.

Depp famously modeled Sparrow on the Rolling Stone and thought inviting him to appear in the sequel would be a fitting thank you.

Cinescape have received word from a scooper who claims to know the working title for Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

"I can't give you my name. I can tell you this, I just saw some composite artwork for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: TREASURES OF THE LOST ABYSS I'm not sure if that's just the working title or not."

"The Lost 'ABYSS' is in references to the first pirate ship that sailed in the caribbean," explains the spy. "Sorry, that's all I know at this time. I have no information about the script. Disney had a rep here with the artwork. Very hush hush!"

Johnny Depp has been quoted saying that he wanted Keith Richards to play Jack Sparrow's father in the PotC sequels. The Z Review has posted that they've gotten confirmation from Richards that he will be playing the role, but as he's only scheduled for four days of filming, it will probably be a cameo.

Until it appears in Variety or another reliable industry source, though, I wouldn't count on it too much.

Glad I found this community. I'm ringing in the New Year with Bronchitis - so I'm not only delighted to discover that I'm not alone in my love for PoTC and Captain Jack Sparrow, but also glad to have something to take my mind off being sick as a landlubber on a stormy sea.

I work for Disney so if I should happen to be privy to any juicy sequel news or rumors (that aren't supposed to be kept too hush-hush - got to stick to the code, after all) I promise to share. I work with the animals at our AK theme park though, not at the studios. But still... word does tend to travel. Savvy? Thank you to this community's creator - the movie spans generations in its popularity, but it's nice we grown-ups have a place to call our own.

So I'm thinking of This Jacket and These Boots for my pirate costume. I already have These Knee-Breeches, and my friend Cynthia is making me a poet's shirt in exchange for some tech support. I'll be getting some white knee-length hose to go with those breeches. I just picked up some purple cotton for a sash and dew-rag to wear with the costume at my next convention, RustyCon, which has purple as its theme this year. I'll be ordering a Tricorn hat from this nice Lady. And this Saturday I'll be buying some nice gold bullion trim from Kathy at Realm of Regalia to put on the brim of the tricorn. I'll be ordering a clay pipe to tuck in the hat band of my tricorn and I've already bought a silver Jolly Roger charm to end a bead dangle with. I'm thinking I'll string a masculine choker out of some amber and use some more amber for the dangle to match. I've already got a fine sword, even if it's not a cutlass, and I'm thinking of getting a replica flint-lock. Am I missing anything>

BTW - I'm already wearing the big hoop earring in my left ear.
