Description

I've been a Wikimedian for more than a decade, yet when I saw "Move" in the mobile page menu I went, "Huh, what's that button gonna do?" On a GUI, what one understands from crossing arrows is "You can move this in both axes." It just does not communicate what "Move" means in MediaWiki, which is essentially what is known as "rename" pretty much everywhere else. The current icon is at best unintuitive, if not misleading.

move_cur.png (1,080×1,440 px, 461 KB)
does not look like it's going to lead to
move_page.png (1,080×2,729 px, 194 KB)

So I made two samples based on common rename icons.

rename_pencil.png (128×128 px, 1 KB)
move1.png (1,080×1,440 px, 421 KB)

Based on edit. I had to thin the pencil by 25% because otherwise there was not enough space for the bar to look like a bar.

move2.png (1,080×1,440 px, 421 KB)

Based on textDirRTL. If you center the cursor you may not have to create a separate RTL icon, but I find the off-center aesthetically superior.

The latter is arguably the more common type of rename icon but it may be more culturally-specific than the pencil at this point because people have grown up with little interaction with desktop computers with mouses. Material Design also adopts icons similar to the former.

Since T329383, Codex/OOUI has literal, which is fairly similar to the cursor example above.

This was a conclusion that rolled out of T231291#7021522, where a follow-up task was mentioned to be created. I never found it, so tagging with Advanced Mobile Contributions to have this task take that place.

@Mainframe98 Thanks for the link. Seeing that articleRedirect was considered for "Move", I realize we can just take logIn and make it narrower, as in:

move_arrow.png (231×92 px, 2 KB)

This has the advantage of keeping the connotation "Move" has.

If this is too close to articleRedirect, we can use a different icon for "What links here", as in:

wlh.png (414×106 px, 4 KB)

based on linkExternal; or taking @RHo's suggestion (a little too obscure in low resolution):

wlh2.png (414×106 px, 4 KB)

Personally I like this combination:

Nardog renamed this task from The icon for "Move" is far from intuitive, we need a "rename" icon to The icon for "Move" is far from intuitive.EditedJan 25 2022, 7:38 AM

So how about this: create an icon for WhatLinksHere (I'd name it linkIncoming), and use articleRedirect for Move like originally suggested?

Not sure how much of an interest there still is in updating this icon, but the Design System Team may revisit the icon set holistically some time this year, and we can take this icon into account (cc @DTorsani-WMF).

Codex/OOUI now has literal, which is fairly similar to the cursor example above. That would be quite an improvement over the current "both axes" icon.

MediaWiki-skins-Mirage is still missing an appropriate icon for the "move" action, so I'll eagerly await what you'll come up with.

Now that it’s being used by Vector 2022 for all users, definitely something that’s needed. Someone put it best that this is a move icon for photo editing software (or some drag and drop situation), not an icon for renaming something.

Jdlrobson-WMF moved this task from Incoming to Backlog on the Reader Experience Team board.

Coming from T427868#12034957. May I suggest renaming the word "move" to "rename"? I think it's much more intuitive than "move"

That way, even without a good icon, it's still much clearer what that action entails.

Would be nice to eliminate that confusion in general and rename the special page and labels for it to Rename everywhere, tbh (since I imagine it is one of the most confusing words for translators, since English ‘move’ does not match the sense ‘rename’ entirely).

Spinning this off into a dedicated ticket: T429657: Rename "move" operation to "rename" I'd argue once it's renamed to rename, thinking of another icon could be much more intuitive.

I do think changing "Move" in English to "Rename" would be a good idea. Independent of that, as has already been remarked, this icon with the two-headed arrows at right angles is absolutely misleading, and especially so for Commons where we are dealing largely with graphical materials. It suggests the possibility to move in two dimensions, not the possibility to change a name.

I think we need to take into consideration before developing a new icon for move that some large wikis use the term "rename" in their translations (like ukwiki and ruwiki).

The "rename" translation is taken into consideration, in a bigger way. Refer to the task T429657.

Additionally, I think this task is more about splitting the icons to have a better one for the sense move and another one for the sense rename, since right now tools like Convenient-Discussions have to use other ones to denote the same sense:

At the current state, let say if the "move" is not replaced with "rename" completely, there are still some wikis that are using "rename". Perhaps a move-rename hybrid icon might be the most desirable answer? Arrow for "move", and text cursor for "rename", as below:

I think y'all are overthinking this. The function of the move feature is already to rename a page. We can swap the current icon for literal and call it a day as far as this task is concerned.

There is a debate whether "move" is truly a "rename" by its nature, because some users think that "moving between namespaces is not a renaming process", refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Rename_%22move%22_to_%22rename%22

Perhaps let us wait until T429657 being finalized for now.
