Unreal Engine 4 and Unity are now free. Game creation is now in fandom's hands, after years of tragically failed commercial games. And the potential for immersive storytelling is massive.

I'm excited about UE4* because it means that I can create an interactive Jack's house. Not just a fly-through animation that you sit and watch, but a house you can 'play' like a first-person game: go inside, move around at will, interact with objects ... even solve puzzles and become part of a story, if I take it that far. And it's only one step farther to a virtual-reality Jack's house, where you put on an Oculus rig and feel like you're actually there.

*I picked Unreal to try first because it supports HTML5 (still in beta, but what this means is you could play the Interactive Jack House in your browser, no need to download and run an executable file, or to install software). For other reasons, too, but mainly for ease of sharing.

So I've been working my way through UE4 tutorials, totally psyched for what it will add to my personal hobby, but expecting nothing for Gateverse fandom generally, unless the reboot revives interest in a few years. I figured that if this kind of CGI caught on, it would be in a megafandom like MCU, and from my DWth/AO3centric view of fandom, I'm not seeing any signs of that.

THIS IS SO COOL. And made with UE4. ~~I haven't watched the whole thing, because I want to go explore by myself and don't want to be too spoiled, but~~ I wanted you all to know about it -- at least, whoever else missed David Hewlett's tweet. [Have since played with it, and love it.]

kuwdora, an outstanding artist generally and an awesome vidder who's done a lot of work in the Gateverse, is offering vidding-related services at various rates. Along with everything from betas and title design through full commissions, she's available for re-mastering SG-1 vids from the olden times:

The heyday of Stargate vidding happened between 2000 and 2005 and I know there are numerous people who have created Stargate videos with Windows Movie maker, have files encoded to Real Media and are basically the size of a pixel on your screen. My visual memory of Stargate is encyclopedic enough that I would be very happy and able to remaster your Stargate videos from that era ...

... and she can re-master vids that are on VHS, too.

I will be commissioning something for sure, and I will be over the moon if some of my favorite older vids get some quality TLC.

Jack's bedroom: Meta with images

(This is an addendum to this post about Jack's house. All images link to larger sizes and have mouseover notes.)

After watching the 'Threads' Directors Series featurette, which includes footage of the bedroom scene (here's a screencap) being shot in the location house, my best guesses are that the 'Threads' bedroom scene was filmed in a different part of the house from the 'Fragile Balance' bedroom scene, that the 'Threads' bedroom location is in the Rorschach wing, and that it has a fireplace and (wonder of wonders) closet space.

Jack's house: Floorplan and meta (image-heavy)

A few places on the web provide the location address, and Google Earth provides aerial images of the building, and I had need of a floorplan somewhat updated since the making of the wonderful one in the Solutions wiki that has been so useful all these years, so here's a draft.

There's a whole section of Jack's house that I was never aware of! The evidence is right there in the establishing exterior shot the show always used, and also in the over-the-roof shot when Samuels visits Jack at the beginning of 'Children of the Gods,' and probably everybody else knew this perfectly well, but until now I hadn't compared it carefully enough to what's shown in the interior scenes to notice.

ETA: All the images in this post link to larger versions (I didn't add 'click to enlarge' to the mouseover text on all of them), and the mouseover text on most of them has additional notes.

Solstice wishes, and a question about Jack's bedroom

A very happy and peaceful solstice to all. :-)

Question: Does anyone remember a behind-the-scenes/making-of video showing a bit of the set-up of the 'Threads' scene in Jack's bedroom? I'm collecting source, trying to figure out if they used a different room in the location house from the one in 'Fragile Balance,' or if it's the same room and the owner redecorated. I'm pretty sure it's not a constructed studio set (like the 'Lost City' bathroom), because there's a promo pic of a bunch of the ptb sitting in that room, apparently taken while 'Citizen Joe' was being filmed in the location house. But the walls are paneled, and the carpet and headboard are different. If the behind-the-scenes thingie I'm thinking of shows more of the surrounding area, it might give more clues. So far I haven't found what I'm thinking of in the S8 DVD extras. Could it have been a Lowdown?

I have a ridiculously obsessive chunk of meta in the pipeline regarding Jack's house. This is the last bit of detective work for it. :-)

The last round at fan_flashworks included Stranger Things by thisflowerisscorched (Carter, Baal, Mitchell, Landry; teen, with suggested Carter/Baal; 2322 words). There was also a Jack/Daniel fic by hyperfocused in September: New Ground (1000 words, teen).

And three SG-1 fics for the Stargate Kink Meme have posted at AO3 so far, including a Jack/Sara fic: clumsy (1420 words, background Jack/Sam, adult). The last time I followed a Stargate kink meme, SG-1 fic was pretty thin on the ground, so, yay.

Oh, you guys -- magibrain wrote this wise and moving Bra'tac and Kasuf story a while back, and I've been trying to find the right words to recommend it with at bestthingever (Fig gave it a wonderful rec here), and more than a month later I'm still capable only of pointing and flailing, so: Fire and Calm, 4000 words, teen. It's so beautiful. ::points:: ::flails::

Aaaaand there is brand-new Tallulah fic! A vignette-sandwich-cookie treat: Three for Three, nine sentences, all ages.

For this past Alphabet Soup, busaikko wrote clone!Jack and Hammond working out where clone!Jack will really go, and it's a great take on problematic canon and offers an awesomely cool (albeit heartbreaking, but they're all heartbreaking) option that should spawn its own spinoff suspense/adventure series. I Is For I Know You Are But What Am I?, 1123 words, all ages.

And splash_the_cat sent Daniel to a Wormhole X-Treme! convention as a special scholar GoH, and the story of what he finds and finds out there (and texts to Jack) is smart and funny and totally entertaining: F Is For Fandom (aka "No One Expects the Fannish Inquisition"), 3000 words, teen.
