An open letter to RPGamers regarding the Status of The Dark Ages

The time has come for The Dark Ages to conclude. It has been an amazing time and a lot of us are sad to wrap it up. Plotwise, we're heading into the big fight and a satisfying coda for characters who survive it. You're all invited to read along and raise a glass when it's done.

That said, there is one sad bit of news that I must report. It has come to my attention that upwards of six outside RPGamers have talked to a former co-mod about appropriating The Dark Ages (name, concept, perhaps some of the characters) with out my permission and starting it up elsewhere.

It was a great concept and yes, I -- the OWNER -- thought long and hard about its current end, as well as a possible sequel. However, as I own the FULL rights to The Dark Ages and the concept thereof, I respectfully request the outside parties drop any and all such talk of stealing the game/concept immediately. I truly appreciate my friend bringing this to my attention.

Poaching concepts, names and characters is a serious affront to all serious RPGamers, and I'm sure you'd agree that if someone went behind YOUR back to steal your game or name, you'd be as outraged and upset as well.

So to ZeroToEternity (AIM) and others who approached her about this outright theft, you should be ashamed.

Please respect these wishes.

One born with the strength and skill to fight the vampires,
to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers.

When ‘Chosen’ aired, the Whedonverse changed forever. There’s hundreds, maybe thousands of Slayers now.

And almost as many Live Journal games set in the Buffyverse. Some explore familiar territory, taking old seasons for a new spin. A few explore the characters as children and teenagers. Most go the post-season 7 route, collecting multiple slayers and letting ‘em fight over bathroom space.

But.Once in a while, someone comes up with a radical idea, and tells a Whedonverse story WITHOUT Buffy at its centre. Instead focusing on a few supporting cast members at its core and creating an ensemble of new players.

Welcome to The Dark Ages.

Giles: When you live atop a... a mystical convergence, it's only a matter of time before a fresh hell breaks loose.

The Watchers’ Council, despite the First Evil’s efforts, is rebuilding. Some members survived through luck. Others were kept in safe houses, prepared for just such an attack. Some came out of retirement. And then there’s Sacred Heart Academy, a private University secretly training the next generation. All under the watchful (some say non-blinking) eye of Jason Cain, who assumed leadership after the death of Quentin Travers. But Cain has an agenda that extends beyond training Slayers and Watchers for the new millennium. One where he will ascend to Godhood.

Rupert Giles, returning to England for a small vacation, is conscripted by Whistler to fight against the rising tide. Others have joined him and others, while living their own lives, are slowly being drawn into this whirlpool. A storm is brewing, threatening to draw the entire world into darkness. And here’s the thing: there’s no guarantee the White Hats can stop it.

Buffy: That's the plan. So. Am I crazy?
Willow: Well, "crazy"'s a strong word.
Giles: Let's not rule it out though.

Character Being Auditioned: Andrew Wells

The Details:

Canon-wise, Andrew is in Rome with Dawn and Buffy. A tragic event will occur in the near future sending Dawn on a collision course with Giles who she believes was the cause. (It's actually an other-world vampire version of him.) Partly through guilt – Andrew gave him access – and his desire for redemption, Andrew crosses Europe with Dawn, chronicling her path of revenge. He’ll also take it upon himself to infiltrate the Watchers’ Council when he learns that Jason Cain is planning to open the Nine Gates and bring Armageddon to our world.

There's a new Whedonverse RPG in town... If you've ever wanted to be a part of an RPG from its beginnings, this is your chance!

Background: After the collapse of Sunnydale and the great battle in Los Angeles, survivors disbanded and traveled the globe to find newly called slayers, train as watchers, continue fighting demons on other Hellmouths and mystical convergences, or live their own lives as they’d always dreamed was possible. In the beginning, Buffy, Dawn, and Andrew headed for Italy. Willow, Kennedy, and Xander traveled, hoping to locate slayers. Wood, Faith, and surviving members of Angel, Investigations struck out on their own missions.

Game Setting:In the year 2008, an unknown power began to rise deep within the mountains of Nevada. Despite an unwelcome greeting by locals, both humans and demons descended upon the small town of Searchlight, Nevada, drawn to the beacon of energy emanating from the abandoned mines.

Characters: This game contains a decided and purposeful lack of canon characters. The primary focus is on originals. We welcome applications for dark or light versions of the following: slayers, demons, vampires, witches, watchers, and other power and non-power characters.

"Angel" has 3 episodes left in the series. Next week's episode features Darla and Drucilla in flashbacks and former BTVS nerd, Andrew (Tom Lenk). There is also a Buffy look-a-like in the crowd. Since Sarah Michelle Gellar has opted-out of appearing, the "Angel" team has found ways to incorporate her into the episode.
