Tim had one more person he had to tell, but it would be better to do this one without Bart. He let Bart out in a seemingly random neighborhood, but as soon as Bart was gone, Tim changed into his costume.
He climbed a tree to the roof of a house and knocked on the window.
Stephanie Brown opened it. “Tim,” she said quietly. “Hi.”
“Hi, Steph,” he said. “I’ve…got something to tell you.”
“Yeah?” Steph said. “I’ve got something to tell you too.”
“You can go first,” Tim and Steph said at the same time. They both smiled.
“I’m gay,” they said together.
“Wait, really?” Tim said.
“You too?” Steph said.
Tim leaned back against Steph’s house and laughed.
“That makes this so much easier,” he said. “I was really prepared to feel horrible.”
“I know,” Steph said. “Huge weight off my shoulders. And it means we can stay friends without being horribly awkward!”
Tim nodded. “Yeah, that’s…that’s great.”
“So, are you with someone? Or did you just notice yourself watching guys in the locker rooms?”
“Steph! No, I’m dating Impulse.”
Steph laughed. “Impulse? Really?”
“Oh, not you too. You should hang out with him at some point. He reminds me of you, a little.”
“Hey, I’m not impulsive!”
“Mmhmm. You always have a huge plan that consists of much, much more than hitting people.”
“Hey, not all of us are brilliant tacticians, you know.”
Tim grinned. “So are you with anyone, then?”
Steph nodded and blushed. “I’m with Cass.”
“Cass?” Tim asked, shifting to face her on the roof. “Batgirl Cass?”
“That’s the one,” Steph said. “She’s…well, I know you think she’s creepy, but she’s really great, Tim.”
“No, no, I’m sure she is,” Tim said. “She’s just…Batman’s going to kill you,” Tim said.
“He will, won’t he?” Steph said. “Maybe Cass can protect me.”
Tim smiled. “Good luck, Steph. And we can still fight crime together and everything. Even if we aren’t dating.”
“Wouldn’t miss it for anything. Night, Tim.”
“Good night,” Tim said, and vanished into the shadows.
Tim put on his street clothes and drove home. He was glad that he and Bart no longer had to hide their relationship. Everyone important knew, and anyone who didn’t would find out quickly enough. Even better, no one had taken it that badly. Wally, Bruce and his dad might not be very happy with the relationship, but they’d come around. All things considered, it had gone better than Tim had hoped.
And Alfred had found him tickets to the premiere of the film Exploding Explosions. It would make the perfect first date as an openly gay couple. He couldn’t wait to tell Bart.
