Quick recap of my scan rules:

tutorial: #001 - Jensen

Because I finally got around to saving an Action for this colouring for myself, I also decided to type a tutorial for it. It's a pretty simple colouring and shows how the Brightness/Contrast layer is my friend.

From this: to this:

I'm using PS7, but this should be pretty much the same for all the newer Photoshop versions too. This tutorial requires good prior knowledge about Photoshop since I haven't explained everything very thoroughly. If you have any questions, just ask. :)

1. I used auto contrast, auto levels, sharpen and then fade sharpen 30% for this image. The need to do these first steps depends on the image you are using. Though, it's become a habit and I usually do these to every image.

Every value in this tutorial depends on your image. You have to at least play with the curves layer and the screen layer opacity to get the results that suit your image.

2. Duplicate the layer, set to screen, opacity 62%.

3. Layers -> New Adjustment Layer -> Curves layer

First point:
I: 27
O: 6

Second point:
I: 194
O: 167

4. Layers -> New Adjustment Layer -> Selective Color layer
Reds
C: -73
M: 8
Y: 28

Neutrals
C: 19
M: 11
Y: 9
B: 4

5. Layers -> New Adjustment Layer -> Hue/Saturation layer: master saturation +7, red saturation +10. This layer makes the reds more saturated. You probably won't need this layer on most images. Again, it depends on the image you are using. For this icon, I erased this layer from over Jensen's skin, so that I could make his red undershirt "pop" a little without making his skin too red.

6. Layers -> New Adjustment Layer -> Brightness/Contrast layer: brightness -8, contrast -20. You probably need to adjust this so that it suits your image. For brighter, more contrasted colours, leave this layer out.

And that's it.
