I know that you're all shocked to see that someone is actually making a post here, but never fear it's only me (who else would it be?). I'm just writing this because I feel it needs an official announcement, and since she's well into the 3rd trimester it's safe to do so. Without further ado I give you the announcement:

Ladies and gentlemen of LJ, mzbunny, one of our intrepid maintainers is expecting a little Bunny in late May/early June. So send all of your well wishes for her and baby, who's name I believe will be Jules Amanda.

Congratulations mzbunny!

I figured that since this was my topic I'd be the one to kick things off. Hell I may be the only one to do this, so here goes:

Ingredients:

2 cups of canned sweet potatoes
1 cup of sugar
3/4 of milk
4 Tsp of melted margarine
3 eggs
1 tsp of cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
pinch of nutmeg
2 9" Nilla wafer or graham cracker pie shells

Preparation:

1. In a large bowl mash sweet potatoes with the margarine until you have what looks like sweet potato mash potatoes.
2. Add in the eggs, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix until well blended.
3. Stir in milk and vanilla.
4. Poor into pie shells and bake @ 375 degrees for about 40 minutes or until a fork inserted into the middle of the pie comes out clean (if you really want to do tell if its done just shake the pie pan, if the pie doesn't jiggle then it's ready).
5. Allow pies to cool for several minutes before cutting into sections. You may add you own little spin by garnishing the slices with things you like such as whipped cream or nuts. Whatever you want just go crazy!

That's my recipe. I hope someone wants to try it out. If you do let me know how it turns out.
</div>

Hello? Hellooooooooooo! Well it's been a while since anyone has posted anything here so I thought that I'd try to get the ball rolling once more. So, *blows the dust away, while swiping at cobwebs*, I thought that in honor of the upcoming holidays we'd have a thread about cooking. I'm mean if there's one thing that we Southerners enjoy it's good food. For this new topic I'm asking for recipes. Come on let us know about your signature dish. What spectacular thing are you planning on preparing for this upcoming Turkey Day? It could be anything just so long as it cookable, so tell us about dessert or your latest experiment with the perfect turkey. It don't matter as long as you burn.

how to use the lj-cut

I thought that since I've introduced memes into this community, and they can get a bit long, I'd give a little tutorial in how to use the lj-cut. This way we can make the posts shorter so that people don't have to scroll for miles to get to entries at the bottom.

The easiest way to use the lj-cut, I've found, is to use the rich text editor. So here's how I do it:

1. When you're on the post to journal screen, look at the bottom of the post box and click the link that says switch to rich text mode.
2. Once in rich text just type you entry like you normally would
3. When you're finished typing, highlight the text that you'd like to put behind the cut.
4. Once the text is highlighted look at the top of the post box and click the second box on the top from the left. This is the lj-cut box and it will automatically insert the lj-cut for you.
5. When you click the lj-cut box a window will pop up with the words Read more..., if you want to you can change the words and that will become the link for your cut text.
</div>

I think that this will help make out posts shorter and give the display page of the community a more streamlined look. I would be really very appreciative if you guys would give it a try. I think you'll like it.

Louisiana District Attorney Eddie Jordan has lost his case in federal court recently. Jordan was ordered to pay $3.5 million for civil rights violations of 43 white workers who were fired when he took office in 2003. The workers were replaced by an entire black staff. Jordan has maintained throughout the case that race was not a motivating factor in choosing his new staff. What are your thoughts?

Story link: http://www.nola.com/newslogs/tpupdates/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_tpupdates/archives/2006_07_06.html

So I've gotten back into reading this past year and I'm enjoying getting immersed in a good story once again. I thought that since we're all still getting to know something interesting about one another then we could do a book survey. How about a top 5. So here goes: What are the top 5 books that you've read? Why did they make your list?

1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. It was darker and gritter plus it introduced me to Sirius Black.

2. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. I still read this book and I'm almost 30. It was so imaginative.

3. Saving Grace by Julie Garwood. My absolute favorite romance novel ever.

4. The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett. I only started reading the Discworld books this year and they've already jumped into my all-time favorites list. I think it has a little to do with Rincewind the wizard and a lot to do with the Luggage.

5. The General Series by S.M. Stirling and David Drake. My father had gotten the 3rd book in this series and I read it when I was bored one day. To my surprise I liked it a lot and then had to go out and buy all the other books in the series.

So those are my books in no particular order. How about your favorites.

LET'S JUST PRAY FOR UNITY, STRENGTH AND UNDERSTANDING FOR OUR YOUTH. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE TEACH THEM THE VALUE OF LIFE AND LET THEM KNOW THAT LIFE IS NOT A RAP SONG/VIDEO (NO DISRESPECT TO RAP). It was AFI's greatest films and Sindey Poitier was honored. He reflected on his movies that were in the countdown and when he got to Guess Who's Coming To Dinner he got very emotional. He said that he drew from his experience with his own father when he addressed his movie father regarding the issue. Apparently, his own dad had a problem with him dating outside his race. He actually cried (Sidney). I think that genre goes back to forbidden fruit. However nowadays it's more of a sign of success and a warped idea of acceptance. Truthfully, I don't have a problem with folks dating out of their race except for those who have climbed the ladder with a sista and when they reach the pinnacle, ditch her. And vice versa for the women. The question, in this case, is would she/he want you if you were a garbage mam? a plumber? a crackhead (yes, black women stand by their man good, bad and indifferent).
Well tonight I did what I normally do on Friday nights, I hung out with the white people for what I affectionately call "White People Night." Well one of the girls there had a date with a black med student and everyone thought that he was sooooo hot. So I looked him up on facebook and no lie he is a very attractive man (notice I didn't say Brotha!). Every picture of him is surrounded by white boys and more importantly white/asian (no sistas is the point) women. Okay, I have been here (Virginia Tech) for a year and yes we blakcs are few and far between, but we are not absent. I have met some of the most beautiful, fine sistas here and yet when i walk into a bar, restaurant or any other social place the brothers don't even turn there heads, not even for one of my common traveling companions who is built like a brick shit house!!!!! The brothers head straight for "them". Shelling out bucks for drinks and pool like they have access to the Bill Gates fortune. One of the people tonight asked me could I really be upset about this rampant jungle fever, especially when I am not currently looking for a relationship. why should these men sit around waiting for sistas to decide that they are finally ready for a man? I had to remind that person that despite what they think of our relationship I will bust their ass if they EVER talk to me like that again. (People think that because I smile and have dreds, or something, that we is that kinda cool! I remind them that I am black and that I have no problem setting they stupid ass straight, with words or other accessories, if needed!). Did I mention that the girl with the date tonight is not exactly the prettiest girl in the department (not even for a white girl, feel me!!!!!)?!?!?! I guess the confusion and lately the hurt that has set in is that even if I was looking where the hell would I look? A few days ago my friend showed me an elligible bachelor in the June issue of Ebony (a Babtist minister! What I look like with a damn minister..I drink, I smoke, I cuse, you get me).But tonight in between my Bourbon and cokes, I thought is this what I am left with, or even worse EHarmony!!! It took my all not to explode as she talked about him, not at her, but at him!! How dare he pick her over ALL the other sisters that are doing the damn thing. And I am not talking around the way girls, I am talking about sistas who know who and whose they are. But then another issue was brought up, can you expect our men to stay with us with all those willing twats waiting and willing to do anything to taste it? My answer was yes, the sistas are doing it. I mean don't get me wrong, when I go outside these days "a hot mess" can used to describe me but still there are sistas out there, out here, that are dying for a good brotha. I don't know maybe I drank to much and none of this makes sense, but these are the thoughts for now.

I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

The story caused massive backlash against Cristal, culminating in a boycott of the drink led by Jay-Z, who pulled the expensive drink from his popular 40/40 sports bar franchise.

"I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life," Jay-Z said in a statement issued on Wednesday (June 14).

"A house like Louis Roederer would not have existed since 1776 without being totally open and tolerant to all forms of culture and art, including the most recent musical and fashion styles which — like Hip-Hop — keep us in touch with modernity," Louis Roederer Cristal said in a statement to AllHipHop.com.

Cristal imports over 50,000 cases of the champagne annually.

HERE'S A HELL OF A SOUTHERN TOPIC FOR YA!

    <lj:music>Hustla Music-Lil Wayne-Keep it Southern!</lj:music>

Yesterday as I watched BET, I had a chance to view the nominations for the BET Awards (Jun 27). I was deeply saddened at society. It shouldn't shock you all that most of the nominees in rap categories were from up north(which boggles my mind, because even HOV himself admitted that the South has it on lock) I'm so sick of the way we are snubbed. Oh before I forget, TI was nominated (and that album is POO) but NY's take on ATL is that although it may lie south, it's still the East Coast. When I lived in ATL, I remember thinking that it was like a southern NY. Busta Rhymes is nominated and his album just dropped. It has a few nice tracks, but let's just keep it real: Bun B did his muthafuckin thing this year (and last). Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Pall Wall, Chamillionaire, JEEZY (who doesn't fit their mold, even though he's an ATLien), B-Gizzle, Pimp C and all those other cats. How the hell could they sleep on us. When you turn the radio on, you hear a drawl. When you turn the tv on, it's straight hood. BET is so messed up. Will we ever get the recognition that we deserve? I doubt it. After a stellar year, for them to shut the south out is an obvious statement. Personally, I'm thinking of boycotting. I wish the artists would consider this also. GIVE US OUR DAMN PROPS!!!!! Ghostface Killa, Jigga, Nas and a few others said they want to put NY back in the game. Further proof that they fell off. I'm ambivalent to some of the artists, but it doesn't change the fact that they laid it down. How the hell is 50 cent nominated with that garbage ass shit?!!!! My daughter could have wrote "Candy Shop". And they say they can't make out a word we're saying, yet you understand Fitty? What's fucking with "Hustla Music"? What's fucking with "Can You Break A Brick Down"? I'm so sick of them treating us like we pick cotton. Has anyone else noticed? Why are they afraid to go to the "REAL" durty durty and further west (HOU)? Are we that intimidating? Another issue that pisses me off is the way our accents are portrayed. A local DJ hear said she couldn't make out a word Lil Wayne says. Is she deaf? On America's Next Top Model, Danielle from Arkansas won and they kept criticizing her on her southern accent. Yet Twiggy was a judge. I just want to know who decided a British accent was better than a Southern accent. They don't say this to asians, brooklynites, indians and jews (who also have distinct accents). You are a product of where you reside. Why is our accent looked down on? I'm just asking all of you first, for your opinion. Second, don't feed into this bullshit. YA HEARD ME?????!!!!!!!!!!!
