Review:
I picked this up mostly because I was intrigued by the cover of the fourth book. Who, me? Shallow? Oh, no! Never!
I do like Young Adult books when I need something quick and light-hearted, so I figured this would be good. I didn't realize that there's actually some pagan subtext in the story, so that was a nice suprise.
The story is basically about Zoey Redbird as she is Marked to become a fledgling vampyre. The mythology is a little bit different in the series and vampyres are a known fact, so that was somewhat Anita Blake-esque but still different enough to be intriguing. Since she is 16 and goes from basically normal high school to vampyre high school, it's still very obviously for teenagers. There's problems to be had and she discovers that she's some sort of uber fledgling pretty early on.
My biggest problem with the book was the random interjections. I know that it was from first person POV and I realize that that tends to mean stream of consciousness, but there were times when the randomness was jarring. I don't know if the authors were trying to use it to remind the reader that she really was an "authentic" teenager or what, but there were times I wish I could have someone go through, mark all of those places out with sharpie and then I could read it without having to worry about them.
There are three more books in the series plus another that's up for preorder. I bought the second at Target because I was really wanting to buy a book. However, to read the rest of the series, I'll likely look to the library (since I have a shiny new library card) or Paperback Swap. I know that the two I have now will be going there.
Yearly Totals:
Number of Books Read: 2
Number of Pages Read: 554
I promise my totals aren't as pitiful as they look. I'm currently reading Ken Follett's "The Pillars of the Earth" and this bad boy is just shy of 1000 pages. Give me time!
