This is the review for rawcarrotk's journal, entitled "Lead the Way... A Light in the Darkness..."

1) What are your first impressions of the journal? What did you like? Not like? How do you think things could be improved? Overall what did you think of the journal?

My initial impressions of this journal is that I REALLY like the layout. I think she is using S1 format, and the only thing I really had a problem with was the link colors. Petty, I know. I love the background and the colors of the entries, but the pastel-colored links on the white backgrounds made my eyes hurt. Other than that, I love it.

Ha, ha pun.

I really like her default icon. It goes well with the bg of the journal, and I definitely think it's original. Makes me wish I would turn up okay in neon. The other two are HP icons, so I guess they work well with the owner, not necessarily the journal, save for the Moony one is both HP and the journal, so brownie points there. 2

It tells the basic story of herself, not too much, not too little. Personally, it made me smile, especially the demented lady in the rocking chair. There are no images, but the font is definitely made into what looks like an h2 font and various colors. Speaking of colors, the yellow appears again. Now, don't get me wrong. My favorite color IS yellow. But against the white background, I had to highlight and hover in order to see the writing at the bottom.

Biography comments/suggestions:
The only things I can gig on is a.) either change the yellow font or put something like a black bg behind it and b.) put some pictures up, if you want to, of yourself. If you don't want to show pictures of yourself [which I can understand in this scary world of the Internet], then put .gifs or other images that would catch the casual reader's eye. I think the actual text of your bio, however, is just perfect and just enough to lure someone into reading more of your journal.

Frequently is not a word I would use for her writing. Sporadic at best, and yes there are large gaps. She has two factors working for her here, however. First off, she does more or less explain why she hasn't updated. Second, she is a college student, and as one myself, I can understand why she doesn't post as often as maybe ljreview would like. Regardless, I'm giving her a 6.
2. Is the journal overall grammatically correct? Is the spelling, capitalization, punctuation good? Is it easy to read?

Indeed. What she lacks in frequency, she makes up for in depth. I definitely enjoyed reading this journal, and continued to do it. 6.

As a general notion, yes. We're allowed to go off on tangents occasionally, though. 6.
5. Do the posts have overall variety? Do they stay on one subject or write about various things/events? Do they post pictures, links, quizzes or polls, if they do are they hidden by the lj-cut tags? Does that make up a major part of the journal or is there a balance between those things and written entries? Quizzes links and polls should be kept to a minimum and the lj cut tags should be used to cover them?
She has posted a lot of quizzes as of late, but most of 2004 are in depth entries. Like I said, I appreciate sporadic in-depth entries better than everyday mediocre entries. And this girl does use the LJ cut, so brownie points go to her on that one. Thank you for the use of the cut! 6

I would not change anything. Like I said, I agree with the sporadic-ness. I am, myself, sporadic and a college student. Besides, I think in depth posts can warrant a day or two lapse in posting. Just my personal opinion. Good job!

Yes, the journal is customized with a color scheme, comes complete with nifty moon background. The links are customized, and despite the yellow and light pastel color for the links, the journal is overall appealing. The journal is public [at least to my eyes and calculations] and comments are enabled. She doesn't even track your IP if you're anonymous, which is refreshing.

Style comments/suggestions:
Ready for some suggestions? I did some editing in my paint program [sorry, but I'm a geek for custom colors] and if you keep everything the way it is, this is what I come up with. Change the white at the top to this color [#953131: custom-made just for you!] and also make it the color of your entry boxes. Use the salmon color you have now and make it the color of your comment boxes. I do now know if this all is actually possible, but using Paint and the Print Screen option, I was able to make it less harsh on the eyes.

Then again, you're the journalist, I'm the reviewer and this IS your journal. Just some ideas!

1) What are your first impressions of the journal? What did you like? Not like? How do you think things could be improved? Overall what did you think of the journal?
I think perhonen is really interesting, but a little closed off. I'd like to be able to really get inside her head, and if she'd put a little more depth into her entries, it'd really go somewhere. But, the fact that she doesn't really use her journal anymore turned me off, so that may be why the entries are a little lacking. Overall, it's a good read.

The journal style is obviously based around a musician, as I discovered in one of perhonen's photo entries. She seems to like butterflies, as they show up quite a bit in her icons. Several music icons too. There's a lighthearted, yet somber mood about this journal, and the icons illustrate that well. 2 points.

I might understand this bio more if I spoke German. I don't, therefore I can't. Seems as if there are song lyrics that affect her in some way, and a few quotes that don't make sense and don't seem to fit her personality at all. She provides lots of disclaimers about everything, but from what I've seen, not much of it is true and it's just a bit of rhetoric. But we all have that, don't we? Pictures, links to journal, communities, icon design contest winnings, etc. Nice overall. 3 points.

While I can understand the friends only comments, I can't see how much of what you wrote in the little blurb about yourself is true. I'm taking it as mostly tongue in cheek at the moment.

Yes, very frequently. Sometimes 2 weeks at a time with no entries and no explanations. 4 points.

For not being a native english speaker, her english entries are flawless and flow very well. I'm not touching the german, sorry. 6 points.

Most entries are short, in german, or both. There's a lot of talk about movies, but not much substance. I went back a year, and only found a few entries that really let you see who was behind them. 3 points.
4. Do posts flow well or is it difficult to follow their train of thought in journal entries?
Her train of thought skips around, goes from english to german, sometimes in the same post. Skips subjects frequently. I think if she could get going on a more than 2 paragraph post, there'd be more flow. But, where it stands, there isn't. 2 points.
5. Do the posts have overall variety? Do they stay on one subject or write about various things/events? Do they post pictures, links, quizzes or polls, if they do are they hidden by the lj-cut tags? Does that make up a major part of the journal or is there a balance between those things and written entries? There's a bit of variety. Some polls, some quizzes, but mostly picture posts. Doesn't always use LJ cut for large pictures and quizzes. 3 points.

The main lj page is lovely, magenta and white, designed around a photo of her favorite musician. A quote from the band's lyrics at the top, and several rather useful links. This is a friends only journal, comments always enabled. 6 points.

Ok, well in the midst of finals, school ending, and then holiday hoopla, I finished my second review, woohoo!

Overall, I think Greg is a really cool guy who seems to have a great personality and that comes through in his writing. You can guess a lot about him by the things he writes, especially about his friends and his girlfriend. He seems to be very caring, and concerned about world issues, not just day to day life, which is appealing.

well as I illuded to in my initial reactions, Greg has a great personality and sense of humor, is very caring, and has a wide variety of diverse interests and passions, it would have been nice to hear more about him in the bio.

I started in Jan. of this year, entries were pretty frequent, then in June, large gaps every month til November, no explanation, other than day to day busyness. But on some days there were several posts, although a lot of them, quizzes and one liners. I'll go with 3 points here.

2. Is the journal overall grammatically correct? Is the spelling, capitalization, punctuation good? Is it easy to read?
Overall, grammar was good, easy to read, 6 points

More posts didn't have substance than the ones that did. And the ones that did, few and far between, and still not very substantial. Some entries were fairly long, detailing every grueling minute of his weekend, others were really short. Honestly, sorry, no, I had to force myself to keep reading. 2 points

4. Do post flow well or is it difficult to follow their train of thought in journal entries?
Flowed well, except when he was on meds for his back, and I can relate, 6 points

Initially the posts had variety to me, I thought this is a cool, intelligent, interesting guy, but as I read on, he wrote in detail about his weekends, etc. and it was all the same old, same old, so therefore, no variety. He did include poetry now and then, not much of it I got his message on, and he did several quizzes, some multiple in one day, and they were not behind cut tags. 2 points

yay! My first review!! This one is for mercenarytoast.

well, I have mixed emotions, in many parts, I really enjoyed his wit and sarcasm, so that was cool. And we have a lot in common...so that was cool too. But as I'm a layout junkie, his journal was cosmetically very boring. Black and grey, and no user icon. Very basic style. And if you like that...hey...kudos to ya. So basically, I liked his sense of humor and honesty, didn't like the style, and sporadic entries, and some entries were extremely boring, which he even admitted, very run of the mill. Overall...mediocre.

Very sporadic entries in most all months, but a few days did have more than one, but generally they were short. He doesn't give explanations, just generally says he doesn't feel like updating, so at least he's honest...3 points

Only a few spelling errors, generally is well spoken, was easy to read...6 points

sorry dude...but I didn't feel like there was much substance at all. I mean, he talked a lot about day to day stuff, but never got really in depth. Maybe that's just where he's at right now. The posts varied in consistency, and to be totally honest, I read a whole years worth, and that was work, it was pretty tedious. 3 points

2 points, and I say that because the posts were so erratic and about nothing substantial

well...again...I hate to be negative, but I didn't think there was much variety, he did write about various things and events in his life, he did post intermittent pics, quizzes, etc, but very rarely used lj-cut tags. In fact, at one point, said to screw the lj-cut people...lol. But the journal definitely wasn't overloaded with quizzes and such. 5 points

1) What are your first impressions of the journal? What did you like? Not like? How do you think things could be improved? Overall what did you think of the journal?
Orange is my favorite color, so orangey already had a point in my non-used-for-LJReview-book. What does count, however, is the smooth and orange look of the journal. And when you read the Title and Subtitle "I have issues: Read all about them." I knew I was in for a wild ride.

Very easy to read journal. Grammar is good, it's all good. 6 points.

It's a very day to day journal. But that's a good thing. Posts that bring something up are followed by other posts that finish the story. There was one post I didn't like, the user got a new job and all they posted was "YAY!". Her friends eventually figured out what the heck she was even talking about. But I cannot deny her points for ONE post. 6 points.
4. Do posts flow well or is it difficult to follow their train of thought in journal entries?
Other than see above, the posts are very easy to follow and flow well. 6 points.

First impression: hey, is that Rufus Wainright in her default icon? I like the picture at the top, and the quote, but the rest of the journal seemed very bare. It’s easy to read and navigate, but, apart from the top graphic, not very eyecatching.

Well, it's your journal, so I think you should be able to write about whatever you want. But, as someone unfamiliar with your life, I wasn't very interested in becoming familiar with it. When I first saw this journal I was very much amused. I knew checking this journal out would be fun. What I like about this journal the most is her funny sense of humor and her interesting entries. There is nothing that I don't like, everything seems to good!

impressions of the journal was that is was going to be boring. I like how this journal
doesn't represent teenage life. I didn't like how this journal revolved around
the same thing over and over again. As I read this journal I began to find it more interesting

At first I was afraid this journal was going to be a bit too unfamilar, with the characters for a title, and creatures for user pics. But reading the entries really turned me on to it more. Biggest complaint is the lack of lj cuts on large items. More indepth posts would be great. Overall he seems to enjoy life and writing about it as well as the other things he finds amusing and shares with his readership. Great sense of humor.

I wasn't impressed with her userinfo, though her journal theme is beautiful. On closer reading, I found her posts sweet and informative about her daily life, but not very expressive of her views and opinions. If she improved her info page and made her writing style a little easier to follow, I would've enjoyed her journal much more. Overall, thirty-five out of fifty points.

No, pictures and accompanying sentences just seem added one after the other with no planning involved. She only capitalizes names and her punctuation drives me crazy (it may be creative, but no. Just no). Without images (perhaps even with them), it looks disjointed and unattractive.

Nine graphics, which is good in itself. I prefer the buttons, cat photo and the user's photo to the duck pictures, which are poor quality. An image editing program could crop to the ducks themselves and make them clearer.
Excluding the images and their links, there is no customization: no centering, font changes, colours, headings, etc.

Does the biography provoke interest to read the journal?

Not for me, no. Sorry.

Very dark and spooky colour scheme with a header image and text, which I love, although there's no browser title. Poetic comments links, stemming from her favourite quote, I think. She credits the style creator in both her main layout and userinfo. The journal design is easy on the eye and quick to navigate; the DIV layers are especially handy and keep the journal compact while keeping an attractive design. All posts are public, I think, and anyone can comment apart from anonymous users.

Journal is being re-reviewed because I didn't know it was friends onlyEither the background or the font has to change. Journal is hard to read. However, right off the bat I LOVE the user's sense of humor. The title of the journal is "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die." How can ya not like that!?

She is a paid user and she uses the Compenent and i was happy to see that. And she was hard to get in touch with at first but nice when I asked her to add me. At first she had 2 friends only posts and there was drama in the comments. But she had apologized. Seems like an intelligent girl.

Right away I noticed the customization, especially the border around the entries.I like the color sceme and general layout and the comment links are creative. Overall, the journal was very good, and could be better with a bit of tweaking to the left side of the layout. There was a nice medium between lighter and heavier, more passionate posts. She clearly uses her journal to talk not only about her activities but also her passions and beliefs.

6pts-Spelling is great, puncutation is good too. She doesn't capitalize, but the entries are still easy to read due to their spacing.

6-She has a nice black and white color scheme going on. Easy to read and simple.. There is a pciture on the left half of the page, that doesn't seem to make much sense. Not sure why it is there, but randomness can sometimes be a good thing I think it might be a pic of Slyvia Plath, someone she admires.(One entry mentioned there being a pic of Plath now on her journal) Comment links and comment counts are customized. Anonymous comments are permitted and she logs IP addresses of anon. commenters. Posts are public.

Perusing burkean was a pleasant experience. The writer is intelligent and witty. My day is a little brighter from reviewing it, assured in the knowledge that there are still journals worth reading out there.

When I first looked on nx01deevolution's journal, I had just intended to leave a comment and look over his journal later, but on the first few entries I had seen i noticed there wasn't a place to comment, eventually I went down far enough to find it, and I started to read. I'm not exactly sure why, but his journal was intriguing, and I just started to read it, and really enjoyed all of the posts.

Well his biography is rather on the short side. I really liked at the bottom in front of his counter he wrote 'And now for the ugliest counter ever'. That really made me smile, because I had already read some of the entries, even something that short expressed how his journal was going to be.

That's what i really truely loved about this journal, they were very creative and thought out. They were funny and made me want to keep reading, a very nice job 6 points

First time I went to it, it was on friends only but I liked what I could read that time and the layout is simple but very striking. I like the way she speaks her mind, unapologetically and unabashedly. Looking further into her journal, made me wish we were real life friends. She's fun to be with, deals with her frustrations like an adult and a bunch of other good stuff. And she doesn't have one single blinking thing on her journal which makes it GREAT. :)

Unlike so many of the biographies I have seen here in LJland, crushdmnb's biography is short and sweet. Straight to the point, a bit whimsical, a little self-deprecating if you will but she makes up for it by being the exact opposite of what she claims she is. Also, there are no millions of photographs cluttering the space up. Instead, she posts links to the photos with very interesting taglines so even the laziest of lazies will be intrigued to click and see.

A very personal journal. The user posts fairly frequently. Usually on a day to day basis. Gaps between posts aren't that noticeable except for one ocassion in November. Doesn't explain why she's been away. Although she does proclaim the reasons that have been bothering her or hindering her in her daily life which certainly could apply. 6/6

She does use lots of proper punctuation which is a nice change. Proper spacing makes for easy reading. Intelligent lady, rare spelling errors if any atall. 6/6

Posts are about what she has done in a day, posts conversations and interactions with her friends and room mates. Posts quizzes once in a while. Nothing to have a heart attack over, or anything that REALLY appeals to my personal interests. This varies from person to person although. 4/6

She posts a lot about Chris, and the posts do flow fairly well. Its a shame that she doesn't receive many comments on what she posts. 6/6

It would be reasonable to link (for instance) several of the pages i found most interesting, plus those pages most biographical to a short index, either a dated in dec entry, or on the info page. As my notes suggest i found several outstandingly well written and revealing pages that any new friend would be charmed to read early on in the relationship.

Postings are frequent. Often multiple times per day, although most often dated in the late evening, understandable as she is BUSY.

It is among the best blogs i've read in the blogsphere as to English quality and sentence structure that holds attention and demands a reading. Very nice.

There are two distinctly different kinds of posting. The first are short, friendly, community of friends type of pieces. Often a quiz or something from a friends page that struck her fancy and caused her to post. The second kind are much deeper and thoughtful, about 20% of total entries, it is these jewels that kept me looking and reading.

4. Do posts flow well or is it difficult to follow their train of thought in journal entries?
The individual posts are easy to follow, plus there are a few multiple entries that follow a series of related thoughts that really show what is going on over a period of time, (weeks). Most of the posts are related to her friends list and show careful interaction with these people and with their journals.

5. Do the posts have overall variety? Do they stay on one subject or write about various things/events? Do they post pictures, links, quizzes or polls, if they do are they hidden by the lj-cut tags? Does that make up a major part of the journal or is there a balance between those things and written entries? There were several good ideas that i had not seen before on a blog. Poll for what movie to see Friday night, for instance. Despite being both a non-traditional/older student and a single mom, she makes the time to share thoughts, not just for big events like the 9/11 anniversary, but for things like obits of people she likes. (Mr. Rogers) There appeared to be more quizzes than i would expect, but it looks like these are shared interests where friends compare their results. In which case this is a continuation of her interaction with friends and their journals. I was also surprised at the number of phone calls, IM, and letters she exchanges with journalling friends. A real plus for those friends involved with her, as it shows a depth of committment to an online relationship, i suspect is not usual, and reflects her loyalty to friends. As to the use of lj-cut, i read most of the postings via calendar functions and these skip the cuts so i am unaware if she uses the cut-tag, but looking at the last month, i believe she does not. However few of her postings are more than a couple of paragraphs, so this is not a problem.

Journal comments/suggestions:.
There are several places where the comments are really good, both hers and correspondents. I'd recommend duplicating those in the body of the message and interact with them there via the ability to edit entries after the first posting. It is awkward, you might have to draw people's attention to the fact that you modified the entry since they read it, but i sometimes missed really good stuff, being buried in a flood of 'me too' type of comments.

School is such a big part of her life, that i was surprised not to find papers or essays written for classes posted on the blog. Plus interaction with school itself is not more than about 10% of total writing, again a surprise given the perfectionist tendencies(in a good way) and the justified pride she has in her work. Syllabus, notes from class, conversations about school material are legitimate and interesting journal entries, however rare on elementalmuse. Sadly so, i'd love to hear more about last semester's Chinese philosophy, for instance.

Colors are white on blue, easy on the eyes, thankfully. Sidebar is not modified, standard links, journal has a background picture. There are friends only postings, maybe 5 per month. Comments are enabled and often used, both by friends and by her to respond to them. These discussions were always friendly and supportive, in keeping with the major themes of her blog- friend support and comfort. So style is useful but not customized.

Wow its pink.. Not a bad thing. I really like the contrast with the black, pink (?, fuscia, lavender?) and white. The only thing is while the links on the black park show up excellently. It appears faintly on the white background. It looks like she posts quite a few detailed posts. Her default icon matches her journal which rocks. She is presenting herself very well. Not alot of quizzes (I don't really see any, but I just scanned the first page). Okay on to my review...

The Biography is very well written and articulate. She bolds what she feels are relevant topics. It you want to skim quickly you might just get a rough idea of who she is. I like that. The only complaint is the pink.. Not that I don't like it. Its that the links don't show up clearly on the white background. If there was a way to make it darker. That would be great. Either the background or the font has to change. Journal is hard to read. However, right off the bat I LOVE the user's sense of humor. The title of the journal is "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die." How can ya not like that!?

Ahh, we've hit our snag. Depth IS an issue. Posts are usually 2-3 sentences long. Not much is talked about. If I had to guess, I would say this was a just before bed journal. 3 points

I like the color scheme, black and light green with blue links, it works together very well. Links do not appear customized, and I recognize the layout as an LJ standard (not that there's anything wrong with that). The main problem is the layout leaves a GIANT black space on the left side of the page. I'm only taking off 1 point for that, since it's really not even there fault, but maybe an override could put a picture there or something. 7 points.

Sadly, this is where the journal gets blasted. Something is out of whack. The font is too big for the page. Maybe it's just not what I am used to, but I don't like it. The primary colors are black white and purple, somewhat clashy. All the text is the same size and subjects are idented way right for reasons unclear.
