I'm sorry this vote is so late going up. The positive part of the delay is that you'll have a bit longer to work on the next challenge! We have some beautiful icons and we'll have some tough choices. Three skips were used this week.

- It's hard to focus on the subject because she's so washed out, and the white specifically on the background draws the focus away from her.

- the colouring is too washed out, and the cropping takes the focus away from the subject making the icon very easy to over look.

- The coloring makes it very hard to see her face. It's also quite flat.

- The coloring is too light and looks faded.

- The center cropping would have worked better a bit further out and the coloring is too orange and blue... not much shading.

- the icon is blurry, and the colouring is very dull and dark, also, it's cropped too close to the subject, giving it no perspective.

- the image is dark

- The coloring makes Nate's skin look too orange, and the crop places his nose a weird distance from the edge of the icon, so that with the shadowy (tree?) in the background coming up, you can't quite tell where his nose ends.

- Dark, blotchy coloring and unattractive crop.

- Nate's face is too red. The icon, in general, is very dim lit.

+ I love your use of textures here, especially how to the section overlaid with tiny text appears to be coming out of her mind. The crop is simple enough to support the busy textures.

+ Very creative and the cropping fits the theme perfectly

- The crop doesn't really work for the position he's in, and the coloring makes his skin look rather green against blue hair. The background just seems more appealing to the eye than the subject himself.

- The cropping looks off and the coloring makes his skin look yellow.

+ I love the almost industrial feel of this icon, the way the texture follows the similar line of her arm, the way it's boxed in, pulling us into the introspection I see in Beth/Parker's face. And I like the way the F fits into her curve.

- The text placement and font choice is very original, but the image is over-saturated, and the crop doesn't really work.

- The colors appear to be a little over saturated, which makes Parker look a little too red and it clashes with the blue background. The text also looks a bit choppy like a softer anti-alias would have helped smooth it out. On the other hand, the placement of the text was very clever with the f tracing along the side of her body and the cropping was nicely done.

- The border takes away from the icon and the font doesn't work with it, the f in thief is almost none existent on the edge of her

- Dark, rough edges.

- The cropping is very awkward with cutting of the top of her head. The coloring is also very flat. There needs to be more contrast.

- The cropping cuts off Parker's face in an odd way.

- The icon is very over-sharpened.

- Over-sharp with an odd blending of texture. There is a smug of blue on Alec's shoulder and a dot of color on his forehead.

- the coloring is very unflattering for the image. with a coloring like this (I'm guessing it's a multiply layer), you either have to go all the way, which means you have to choose a darker color, or you should erase the red on their faces altogether. with this "in between color" it looks washed out.

- The only thing done to it was cropping and a placing a font on there that doesn't flatter the icon. Not a lot of work was put into it.

- Text placement and font choice seems a little unfortunate. The font is too "heavy" if that makes any sense. Also, maybe it would have been better if you had placed the text a little lower or hadn't used any text at all.

- The way the red cable crosses in front of her leg and the black cables distracts attention away from the figure. The font is very boxy and seems out of place, especially where the P overlaps her shoulder.

+ The font size really works here, and the way Elliot's body obscures it only serves to draw more attention to it. Also, the phrase contrasted with the smiling figure works really well. The texture does add some interest, but a small note, the lower edge of it seems a bit harsh, next time maybe fade/blur ect. to make the transition a bit smoother.

+ Great use of font and text!

+ The image position over the text and overall feel of the icon is great.

- The crop is good but the text does not match with Christian's pose on the photo.

+ The cropping is excellent, with all the negative space above them.

+ Good coloring and use of negative space.

+ I'm a huge fan of negative space nicely done, and this does that. Great job with the coloring as well, as the original cap colors were very washed out and N/S were too red in the face. This fixed it perfectly.

+ Even without any text, this icon says a lot and the emotions portrayed are quite beautiful.

+ The use of black & white with the colored texture is very effective. The contrast is also excellent.

- The fire distracts from the image, rather than enhancing it.

+ the composition looks very original.

+ Great composition! I'm so glad you didn't go for a blend, but the straight line works with these images. The coloring is a bit faded, but it matches for both of them, which is a trick since it's two different caps there.

- the text is hard to read and the image on the right could be re-sized down some to go better with the image on the left

- There is a part of the picture showing through on the left side of the black border which looks out of place, and the text is too close to the edge. Both of these together makes the text difficult to read and a bit distracting. But on the positive side, great concept for the icon and good choice of words.

+ It's original, and the icon has a very good composition. The font compliments the image perfectly.

+ I love the effect of the cut out and the way that the font color matches his face...nice use of both color and grey-scale.

- The inset makes the icon seem awkward.

+ I like the cutout effect. The use of the different colors on the fonts is also a nice touch.

+ I really like the font and text color, as well as the graffiti feel of the icon.

- The cropping of the phot seems unintentional and it looks like the text is covering part of his face rather than being a cohesive icon.

- As a rule, it's a bit disturbing to me to have someone's pupil cut off. The contrast is a bit off as well.

- the cropping seems awkward and the bar covering half his face is just too much.

- While color and sharpness are great, the cropping isn't chosen well. If you had put a horizontal text instead in the lower part of the icon and above that Hardison (whole head and shoulders) it would have worked better

So obviously I got a bit behind with things this weekend. Sorry this results post is late in coming. The plus side of my laziness is that our semi-finalists will have a bit longer (a week and a half) to work on the penultimate challenge entries. There are no skips allowed for the next challenge!

I really appriciate everyone who weighed in on my last post (this community has such great participation for a first run LIMS). As the majority suggested, I'm going to stick with "option one" and not have a come-back challenge for round one. If I plan for something like it in round two, I'll make that clear on the outset.

+ really good use of cropping, nice way to iclude Sophie's face and her shoes.

- The right side of the icon is very well done (nice coloring!), but the icon as a whole seems unbalanced. It might help to have a narrower texture down the middle. As it is, It's not fully clear that the foot is a foot.

- The cropping of the picture is odd. It's too distracting to appreciate the quality of the rest of the icon.

- The cropping seems a bit awkward and the font is too heavy.

- Dark. Sophie's face is over saturated. The foot is not really recognizable

- The frame around Sophie is too dark and outbalances the icon.

- the texture covers to much of the image and detracts from the image

- the left side of the icon is very dark and the cropping makes the feet/leg hard to distinguish (although it was a good idea as composition goes). the grey behind the font is distracting.

+ I love the creativity of this crop. It's sexy and mysterious and really captures the spirt of Sophie. The text is well exicuted.

- The crop is beautiful and original, but the colouring makes the icon look washed out. There isn't enough contrast to make Gina's legs

+ Very creative concept. The faded background makes the larger image stand out nicely, and despite having two main features the icon doesn't look crowded at all.

- the close crop looks a little faded

- Colors too muted and texture used in background image detracts from the icon.

- the coloring is too muted/washed out. Everthing just blends together, maybe if the top layer was a bit more vibrant the entire icon would stand out more.

+ the crops are good and clear, the text is easy to read, has a "file" feel to it.

+ The cropping and coloring are very nice. The mix of fonts is also fun.

On Wild-Cards and Come-Backs!

Initially I'd planned on having the final challenge be a multiple part challenge (with two weeks instead of one) between the top three icon makers. Then I heard about something called the "come-back challenge" that other LIMS communities have run. I wanted to get feedback from the participants...

Would you rather see:

OPTION ONE

As planned, eliminated down to three (assuming no fails-to-submit, that means challenge six is penultimate and no skips will be allowed), and then have a final battle.

OPTION TWO

Use a come-back/wild-card challenge. Artists are eliminated down to TWO the normal way (assuming no fails-to-submit, that means challenge seven is penultimate and no skips will be allowed), and then the winning two will get a week off while the come-back/wild-card challenge is run. Anyone who has submitted an icon to the contest at some point in round one (even if they were eliminated in the first challenge) could compete, and the winner of THIS challenge goes on to face the final two in the big show-down.

OPTION THREE

Use a come-back/wild-card challenge, and make it a REAL WILD CARD. Artists are eliminated down to TWO the normal way (assuming no fails-to-submit, that means challenge seven is penultimate and no skips will be allowed), and then the winning two will get a week off while the come-back/wild-card challenge is run. Anyone who originally signed up for round one (even if they never submitted an icon) could compete, and the winner of THIS challenge goes on to face the final two in the big show-down.

OPTION FOUR

Let's just do it like a pure LIMS competition... the final round should only be the last two people (Assuming no fails-to-submit, that means challenge seven is the penultimate and no skips will be allowed).

I'd like to hear from all members, though I plan to take competition participants and current contestant's thoughts into higher consideration. I don't want anyone to feel cheated of some well earned bragging rights! But I also like the idea of mixing things up.

Please start your comment with your FINAL PREFERENCE, and then add any further thoughts as needed.

All comments will be screened.

+ The texture, the font, and the coloring of Tim's picture are perfectly blended, and the use of negative space works very well with the background texture.

- Don't get me wrong, cropping, coloring, choice of backgrouns are great, but the font is too prominent.

- A little over sharpened and oversaturated.

- It's too bright and Nate is all washed out. The text also seems slightly awkward. The quote is too long and the font is very ordinary.

- too much text overpowers the image. text is difficult to read

- Crop is awkward and icon appears dull.

+ Beautiful use of text. The black and white is very suiting.

+ The whole idea of the icon is brilliant. The cropping and text placement really makes you feel like he's saying the quote in the picture. Great job!

+ the background works well with Timothy Hutton's skintone. the text is simple and easy to read.

- a nice idea, but a bit off in execution. I realize it's likely the tilt of the head, but the dividing line seems off center, giving the icon an unbalanced look. Also, the background on the colored side would look better if it was pure white. As it is, it is slightly tinted and it detracts from the finished look of the icon.

- A very creative idea. The center crop is fine, but the magnification is too high. Combined with the text, which is over-sharpened, it makes the icon too crowded. Downsizing Tim's face and the use of a smaller font would have worked better.

- The line down the center is very distracting and draws away from the overall aesthetic.

- I like the concept the maker was going for, but I think using the same font for both titles wasn't the best choice. Also, the font is too severe (I don't know the technical way of saying that) and boxy.

- The black stripe down the middle takes away from the icon, maybe if it wasn't there it would look more cohesive. the font looks to to be a bit over pixelated

+ A great use of sepia with the right contrast that none of the definition of the original picture is lost. The text is well blended.

+ The coloring is very nice, but still simple. I also think the text is quite clever. The cropping and "cut-out" of Nate is also done very well.

+ the cropping and the font placement works really great together, especially with the font color matching the skin coloring.

Thanks so much to those of you who submitted icons. We have some really interesting variations in these icons. Unfortunately, worrisomeheart failed to submit an icon in time (after previously using a skip) and has been eliminated.

Remember, everyone is welcome and encouraged to vote, even if you have been eliminated.

RULES

Vote for 1 icon of least quality per challenge. Not which icons you like the least, just which ones have the lowest quality.

Give real/technical reasons (see how to vote tutorial)

Don't give personal reasons like; "I don't like the font", "I don't like the style" or "the coloring is boring". If you do your vote will not be counted.
