fanfic100: 5 down, 95 to go
Okay, so earlier I said my first 10, but it's only 5. Sorry. LOL. I guess I should explain a bit here what I'm doing. I'm gonna try to make all of these drabbles fit into canon. Some will be future fics, and therefore less "true" canon, but the ones that come before the series or during the series, they will all be faithful to canon. In other words, they will all fall in the same universe. The same canon with each other as well as the show. Which might be something I'll regret saying later, but we'll see.
5 down, 95 to go... Jesus. Daunting much? DAMN!

“Support his head-- honey, you have to--”
Lionel smiled, staring down at the bundle in his arms and shifting so his elbow met at the back of the nearly bald head. “God. He’s so beautiful.” He lifts a hand to stroke down the face, laughing lightly when the lips seek his fingers. “He’s perfect, Lillian.”
Lillian smiled, looking up at her husband and newborn son from where she sat in the hospital rocking chair. “Isn’t he?”
“You hear that, Alexander,” Lionel said, his voice going soft, lulling like he didn’t even know it could. “My beautiful boy. You’ll run nations one day.”
Lillian frowned slightly, tugging the blanket closer to her. “Lionel.”
He laughed again, glancing at her. “Only if he wants to, darling, of course.” He looks down at his son again and feels the tears catch in his throat. “My son,” he said proudly, scratching a nail lightly down the boy’s face and watching as his eyes fluttered open. “My beautiful son. You’ll be king one day.”
“You’re pressuring him already,” Lillian says with a soft, tired smile. “That’s a record even for you, Lionel.”
“One can never start too early,” he said grinning back at her, hugging him tightly against his body. “I should have started already.”
Her eyes close as he smile widens. “You have. You started reading stories about Julius Caesar to him when he was only five weeks in the womb.”
“Ah,” Lionel said, laughing again. “Yes. That’s right. Still. Perhaps I should have concentrated on the basics.” He looked down at him. “Now, you see son. When dealing with a merger--”
Lillian’s laugh was beautiful and filled the room with its music. “Lionel. Shush.”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” he chanted, tears rolling down his face as he cleaned up the shards of glass, not caring as they bit into his knees.
“Insolent fool, you stupid, stupid little boy,” she hissed, bending over in front of him. “I told you not to touch that!”
“I’m sorry, Momma,” Lex said, sobbing even harder, the tears blinding him. “I didn’t… didn’t mean to… I didn’t--”
“Alexander!”
Lex turned, sucking in a harsh breath. “Dad… I didn’t… Dad, I didn’t… I wasn’t--”
“Alright, son, alright,” Lionel said, his fingers lacing through the thick curly red hair. “I know, son. Go to your room, I’ll be in shortly.”
As soon as the door shut behind him, he leaned against it, turning his head to hear. It was snippets and muffled, but he heard some of it.
His father saying things like “gotten into you” and “in front of my son” and “only eight years old” and “doesn’t understand this” and “must take your medication, darling.”
His mother saying “stupid little boy” and “broken, gone, fucking gone Lionel” and “I know” and “I’m sorry” and “make me so tired.”
He barely had time to skitter away from the doorway when his father came out of it, but it was enough time for him to see his father’s face, pale and troubled, before the façade slipped back over it.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” he blurted out, shaking his head as he backed into the corner. “I didn’t mean to break Mommy’s vase.”
“I know, son,” Lionel said, voice low and soft as he bent down to look at him, his hand coming up and tracing down the already scabbed line where his mother’s fingernail had caught him. “Your mother didn’t intend to get so angry with you, Alexander. You must understand that.”
Lex tried to stop the tears before they came, but they came anyway. “I know. I’m sorry I upset her.”
Lionel sighed, crouching down in front of him. “You musn’t remember your mother like this, Lex. She’s not herself. She would never strike you, son.”
Lex nodded, eyes wide as he looked at him. “I know, Dad.”
“She’s sick, son,” Lionel said, his hand cupping Lex’s cheek as he smiled at him. “She’ll feel better in the morning.”
“Would she feel better if I got her a new vase,” Lex asked as his father stood. He clenched his hands by his side when Lionel looked down at him with piercing eyes. “I’ve saved my money, father.”
Lionel’s mouth twitched slightly. “Money from what, son?”
Lex looked down. “Um. Cook gives me a dollar if I help her wash the dishes.”
Lionel’s laugh was short, and very quickly covered. “Very industrious of you, Alexander,” he said, reaching down and lacing his fingers through the short red curls. “Very industrious indeed.”

He can still here it, and it’s been hours. Soft moans, whispered names, calls for God. The slip-slide of skin. The embarrassment at catching his parents having sex was nothing to the sick feeling of finding out it wasn’t his mother his father was calling beautiful.
Some nurse, one that hasn’t even been there that long. Someone he doesn’t even know the name of. His father called Rachel when he came, so he’s pretty sure that’s it. How that woman could care for his mother and fuck his father in the same house was beyond him.
“Son?”
He looked up from his history homework and glared daggers just like his father had taught him to.
“Father.”
Lionel, hair slightly messy, a pleased and satisfied look on his face that Lex hasn’t seen in a long time, smiles at him. For a moment Lex forgets why he’s angry. “Something wrong?”
Temporary forgetfulness, it turns out. “Why would you ask that?”
Lionel laughs and walks in front of Lex, glancing down at the book in front of him, reaching out to pick it up. “Trouble with your homework?”
“Dad?”
He can’t even look at him when his father tries to meet his eyes. “Yes, Alexander?”
“Did you have to do it here,” he asks, voice soft, too quiet. Weak, his father would call it. “If you had to… why here?”
Lionel’s face freezes. “Do what, son?”
Lex finally looks up and curses the tears he can feel behind his eyes. “She’s her nurse, Dad. She’s not supposed to be your… your… mistress.”
Guilt flashes in Lionel’s eyes only for a moment, but Lex sees it. “Lex--”
“No, father,” Lex said, shaking his head, standing up, thankful for the way the anger makes his voice stronger. “I saw. I heard. I know.” He looks up at his father and he h and’t known it was possible to feel such contempt for him. For as long as he’d tried, that it would take this for him to really feel it. “Don’t deny it.”
Lionel just looked away and didn’t even try to stop him as he left the room.

“But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door-- Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door-- Perched, and sat, and nothing more.”
He took the book from her as the coughs racked her once again, frowning when even as she cupped her hand around the tissue to her mouth he could still see the blood spattering it. “Mother.”
“I’m only half way through, Alexander,” she said, reaching for the book.
“No, Mother,” he said, shaking his head and setting the book on the other side of him. “You’re too tired.”
“Alexander--”
“I just want to lie here with you,” he said, stretching out on the bed next to her and wrapping his arms around her torso. “You don’t need to read to me.”
Her arm wrapped around her and a warm hand rested on his head. They were always warm, even then, even when she was like this. Months later, when they were cold, that’s when he would be frightened.
“My sweet Alexander,” she said, resting her lips on his head, kissing his temple softly and smiling. “Yes. We’ll just rest now.”
“Mom?”
She looked down at him, stroking her hand over his scalp, and she was the only one that ever did that. Then and now, she was the only one that had ever done that. The only one he’d ever let. “Yes, Alex?”
He smiled and shrugged. “I love you Momma.”
“Oh,” she said, laughter turning into a cough and back again. “I love you too, sweetheart. More than anything.”

He walked in the doorway and froze, the dried tears on his father’s face the only confirmation he needed. “Father?”
Lionel looked up, eyes wide with the first hint of fright Lex had ever seen. “Lex,” he’d said, and that too was another sign, the informality of it, the fact that his father had called him Lex. “Please son. Come.”
Lex walked forward haltingly, trying not to just drop the books in his hands and run into his father’s arms. That wouldn’t do. Lionel wouldn’t stand for that, not ever. Not even for this. “Dad?”
“Oh, my boy,” Lionel said, leaning forward when Lex reached him, reaching out and grasping his son’s face in his hands. “I wish I didn’t have to tell you this.”
Lex blinked away a tear and reminded himself to be strong. Reminded himself he’d been expecting this. “Is it mother?”
Lionel nodded, his thumb stroking down Lex’s cheek a mild comfort at best. “Yes son. I’m sorry. She’s…”
Lex shook his head, because knowing it’s true isn’t the same as accepting. “No.”
“She’s gone, son.”
He shook his head harder, taking a step back, watching his father’s face fall as his hands drifted to his lap. “No! Take it back! Take her to the hospital! Call the doctors!”
“Lex, please, you have to calm down,” Lionel said, standing as Lex walked backwards, the urge to turn and flee so strong he could taste it. “I’m sorry, son, there was nothing else they could do.”
“No,” Lex sobbed, vaguely aware of the tears streaking down his face. “But I wasn’t even here. I didn’t get to… I didn’t even get to say goodbye…”
“Lex, please--”
“I didn’t get to tell her I loved her,” Lex choked out, shaking his head, trying to step back as his father’s arms encircled him. “I wanted to tell her again… just one more… just one more time, Dad.”
“She knew, son,” Lionel whispered as he hugged him to him. “She knew.”
It was the last hug between them that meant anything.
It occurs to me that I should have a Lillian icon. I'm gonna go make one! Lillian icons are hard to make. Does anyone know if anyone made caps of the Scare deleted scene?
