what a year it has been...
Well.
This livejournal has been open for a year. Holy mother of (insert appropriate word here).
Around the 22nd or 23rd of February last year, I actually opened it, but didn't make my first post until February 29th last year. So, technically, this is a day early, but, heh. Anyway. It was interesting to go back and look at my first post because it was all RL related, just a place to get something out that had been bothering me - and I knew that it would be mostly private, because I hadn't yet commented or met anyone in lj fandom at that point.
I could not have predicted what a year it would be. That I would get to know so many of you... that I would actually write my own fanfiction... that I would join an RPG and fall head over heels in love with a silly Irishman...
I had grand plans of posting a smutty story in honor of you all (because I typically don't write the smut very often and
willysunny and crikkita have poked me to do so), but it just hasn't happened yet. I will, though. At some point. :)
Instead, I'll do the stories meme that others have done (although a few weeks ago. I'm late to the party again.) In going back to look over all of the things I've written this year (15 stories over 1000 words, 12 ficlets plus the Points Series, and more than 50 drabbles), I was struck by the different pairings and subject matters. I adore that fandom has really broadened my scope and depth of appreciation for different characters.
*coughs* Enough of kaalee waxing poetic. Here's the meme...
These are the stories I go back to regularly. I have them saved (along with a few others) with the heading: Fics that make me ache. All of them have a depth that I can never quite achieve in my own writing and provide me with images and ideas and hope.
I think these are stories I'd rec to others who wanted a sample of my style or range of writing. One is recent, two are from the fall, and two are from this summer. They feel very different to me, but that could be because of the pairings and the subjects within them.
Thank you all for making this such an amazing year for me. Truly. Getting to know so many people and finding such a support network that extends beyond HP fanfiction is probably the best thing of all.

- The Way of the World by zionsstarfish (ZS) Harry/Draco
~this is probably my favorite story in all of HP fandom. I read it in January of last year, and weeks later, in the midst of something awful, a line from it (So he eats and works and sleeps and has dreams about being unwrapped and peeled right down the center.) came back to me and I tore through my bookmarks and history until I found it. It is sort of a comfort story for me, but so much more than that. - Get There Faster by
hesychasm (Jintian) Harry/Ron
~I cannot express how deeply this story affected me. Jintian takes a bit from OotP that bothered me and expanded on it in a way that feels real and frightening and hopeful all at once. It always moves me to tears. - If You're Breathing by sanj (Sandy Justine) Harry/Neville
~This is another story that expands on canon in a way that I can see. I already mentioned it here not too long ago, but still deserves a nod, as it is one of the stories that I go back to when I need to believe. - A Soft Spot for Lost Causes by helenish Ron/Draco
~To me this is a beautiful journey toward something that I saw as inevitable from the beginning of the story. And Ron here is so delightfully real and right. - Origins of Myth by arsenicjade (Arsenic) Ron/Draco
~I was not initially sure that I was going to get into this, but the more I read, the more involved I became. Very subtly beautiful. And Ron? *sigh* Ron.

- Breathe H/D, R (~1400 words) *DARK*
~I still wonder about where this story came from. It felt suitably creepy to write, though I tried to keep the tone light and only hint at things, so the reader would have to draw their own meaning/conclusions from it. People's reactions to this were vast and wide and I'm proud of it in spite of what my mind came up with. - My Life With Dean, or, How Disney Nearly Ruined My Relationship Seamus/Dean, PG (~2300 words) written for the first time challenge at

~I do not write quickly. Most of my stories take bits of time over weeks to get written, but this was written, beta'ed, and posted in less than 48 hours and most of it still feels right to me when I reread it. It was also the first piece I wrote in the first person PoV (very stream of consciousness). This universe has since grown for me and I have a few more stories jumping around in my head, but this is where it starts. - Autumn Leaves H/D, PG (~2,430 words) written for ihlanya in the fic swap at hd_falling
~This travelled through several permutations until it found its place. I absolutely adore the color and feeling of Autumn and had this odd idea of how Harry might somehow actually notice Draco in a way other than, "What a git." I think that I still like it because of the images and description. - Distraction Seamus/Neville, PG-13 (~1300 words), written for shikishi in the Late Bloomer Ficathon at nevillosity
~This I'm proud of because it was my third attempt at something for Shikishi. The first two were silly and fluffy and one involved aprons and blow-jobs, but this one... I could finally see the pairing. I still really like some of the images in it. - Eyes Wide Shut, H/R, PG-13 (600 words) written for Challenge #2 at harry_and_ron
~The only other story I wrote very quickly. It hit me on a day this summer when I'd been thinking a lot about Ron and something in my head clicked and this flew out. I then got strangley anal and played around with it a little until the four bits fit within 200 or 100 word drabbles.
Thank you all for making this such an amazing year for me. Truly. Getting to know so many people and finding such a support network that extends beyond HP fanfiction is probably the best thing of all.
