The coffee machine, his beautiful, shiny, amazing coffee machine was once again covered in smudges. Smudges that almost definitely belonged to Owen. Ianto sighed and picked up a cloth from next to the sink, running the tap over it quickly, before wringing out the excess water. With a delicate and practised ease he gently ran the cloth over the grease marked steel, wiping away any trace of imbecilic attempts to make coffee.
“Now that's a view I can appreciate in the morning, well any time of the day actually.” Jack stood admiring the rather delicious view of Ianto bent over.
“Did you want something Sir? Or did you just come here to ogle?” Ianto stood and turned to face Jack, his hands on his hips.
“Mostly I came here to ogle.” Jack stated with pure honesty as he approached Ianto, sliding his hands around the Welshman's hips and pulling him flush against his body.
“Only mostly?” Ianto spoke teasingly, capturing the Captains lips in a searing kiss before pulling back with a cheeky grin.
“You'll pay for that Mr Jones.” Jack's voice was ragged, and his eyes were full of unmasked desire, as he pressed his erection up against Ianto.
“After you tell me what you really came over here for. Apart from to ogle that is.”
Jack grinned a wicked grin that Ianto knew could only spell trouble, well that or a new suit. Though generally with Jack it ended up being both. “I have a better idea, how about you get on your knees and whilst you're down there I'll fill you in.”
The double meaning wasn't lost on Ianto and he rolled his eyes, his witty retort cut off before he could even start it by Jack's lips crashing against his.
They parted panting and hungering for more. Inching his way down Jack's body, Ianto unzipped Jack's trousers, letting them fall down around his ankles, the trousers were quickly followed by his pants, freeing his aching erection.
Ianto teasingly licked the tip of Jack's penis, running his tongue around the head, delighting in the sounds his actions were having on Jack. Slowly Ianto licked up the length of Jack's shaft, before taking it into is mouth, taking long luxurious sucks. He wasn't going to let Jack have an easy ride, he was going to draw this out as long as he could. Tantalising and teasing as much as possible.
Jack's hand grabbed Ianto's head, his fingers threading threw Ianto's hair, but Ianto batted it away, continuing his exquisitely slow torture of Jack.
Jack let out a stifled moan, Ianto's little game driving him crazy. “I've...booked us...a, god dammit Ianto.” Jack shuddered, his hand lacing itself into Ianto's hair again, and this time he wasn't going to let it be batted away. “I've booked us a table at that new Italian on Church Street.”
Ianto looked up at Jack, his lips curving into a smile around Jack's cock. Quickening the pace, Ianto stopped his torture, allowing Jack to define the speed and depth with his controlling hands.
With a low rumbling moan, Jack spilled his seed into Ianto's willing and eager mouth.
“Ianto you better have the coffee on, I've had a hell of a..... of for fucks sake you two!” at Owen's loud exclamation Ianto jerked away from Jack, quickly standing up and making himself busy at the coffee machine, whilst Jack leisurely pulled his trousers and pants up, nonplussed by their interruption. “Is it too much to ask that you two confine your carnal activities to more private places.”
“Hey technically outside of working hours, the Hub is my home Owen, and you're early.”
“Whatever.” Owen held up his hand and turned away, mumbling about needing a large dose of retcon with his coffee.
Jack laughed and moved over to Ianto, wrapping his arms around the young man's waist again
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Jack took hold of Ianto's hand as they left the restaurant, causing the younger man to falter a little; snogging in an alleyway, sex in a public toilet and quickies in the Hub, all these things Ianto could deal with, they were part and parcel of dating Jack, holding hands in public however, they'd never done that before.
Ianto looked over to Jack who just smiled, as if there was nothing out of the ordinary. “I'd call this a successful date, no interruptions, we didn't get kicked out of the restaurant and the world hasn't ended.”
“You do realise you've just jinxed us right?” Ianto raised an eyebrow at Jack as he spoke, and no sooner had the words left his lips a commotion broke out up the street. Looking up Ianto could see a man running in their direction, his shirt ripped and a look of immense fear on his face.
“Woah! Slow down there.” Jack grabbed the man with both hands, holding him steady. “Who's after you?”
“A thing, weird looking, didn't look human.” The man was struggling against Jack, his eyes wild with fear. “It tried to grab me.”
Ianto had his gun drawn immediately (he may have been on a date, but they were Torchwood after all), and was straight on his comms.
“Tosh run a scan of Church street, we've got unidentified alien activity and we could use your eyes.”
“There was a rift flare about two minutes ago on Trinity.”
Ianto Turned to Jack who had managed to subdue the man slightly, “Tosh has registered a Rift flare on Trinity. Should we call Owen and Gwen for backup?”
“First we find out what we're dealing with. Ianto stay here with..” Jack looked at the man.
“Ben.” He managed to say shakily eyeing Ianto's gun.
“Ben here, and I'll see if we can find our visitor.” Jack let go of Ben and drew his own gun, before running off in the direction Ben had come from and Trinity Street.
“Who are you people?”
“We're Torchwood, and it's okay you're safe now.” Ianto smiled reassuringly, before checking their surroundings, and putting his gun back in it's holster. There were a few people milling about the street now, and it wouldn't do to start a panic. “What did this thing that tried to grab you look like?”
“It was big, about 7ft, and it was scaly, and oh god what was that thing?”
Ianto was about to speak when his comms crackled to life. “Ianto I just got another rift flare, slightly different reading from the last one.”
“It was the Gopyuil returning through the Rift.” Jack's voice sounded through the comms. “Tosh call Owen and Gwen in, and Ianto take Ben to the SUV he's coming to the Hub with us.”

Jack and Ianto led Ben into the interrogation room, Tosh, Owen and Gwen crowded round viewing screen.
“Who are you?”
“I told you, my name's Ben, Ben Freeman. I'm 26, an only child. My parents are dead. I work in a music shop, live alone, and I'm not an alien.”
“Care to explain why you're being hunted by a Gopyuil?” Jack leaned on the table, trying to intimidate Ben, and it seemed to be working, judging by the way his eyes kept flicking towards Ianto, a silent plea for help apparent in his eyes.
“I don't even know what one of those things is. I didn't even know aliens existed until tonight. That was an alien wasn't it?”
Ben looked towards Ianto who nodded.
“Gopyuil's hunt for sport, once they have a target they keep after them until they can get the kill. Though I've never heard of them hunting on earth before. So the question is, why you? and how'd they find you?.”
“I don't know. I told you I've never seen one of those things before, and I've certainly never done anything to piss one off.”
Jack slammed his hands down on the table. “You're lying. Their targets aren't random. One didn't just pop through the rift and decide on you. They want you for a reason, and when they get you, they will take you back to the moon orbiting their planet, and hunt you there until they kill you or you die.”
Ben looked scared, the implications of what was going on hitting him like a ton of bricks. “But you won't let them get me will you. I mean that's why you've brought me here?”
“If you've got nothing to hide we will do our best to protect you.” Jack drew back from Ben and looked up to where Gwen, Owen and Tosh were, unseen by those in the interrogation room. “Tosh run a background check. Make sure Ben here is telling the truth.”
Jack then turned to Ianto, “Ianto bring him to the autopsy bay. We need to run some tests.” Jack left the interrogation room, leaving Ianto and Ben alone.
Ianto waited a couple of beats, knowing that Jack would be briefing the rest of the team on what needed to be done, before directing Ben to make his way out of the room.
“So this kind of thing happen a lot.”
Ben spoke to Ianto as they moved through the Hub, it was obvious that he was trying to relive some of the tension, trying to avert his thoughts away from what was happening to him.
“We've never had anything like this, but we get all sorts.” Ianto smiled. “Don't worry we'll get this sorted out.”
“I'm glad you were there, the two of you that is. If you hadn't, I'd be running for my life on some distant moon right now.”
“Ianto!” Jack called out across the Hub, “I've got a job for you and Gwen. Owen get those tests done and then take Ben down to the cells.”
Ianto delivered Ben to Owen, and joined Gwen at the cog door, who filled him in on exactly what they would be doing as Jack retreated to his office.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“He fancies you.” Gwen lightly prodded Ianto in the side as they walked up to Ben's flat, a mischievous grin on her face.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Oh come of it, he couldn't keep his eyes off you.”
Ianto fumbled with the keys to the flat, trying to suppress the blush that was creeping over his face. “Can we just get on with the job at hand.”
“Certainly” Gwen smiled and took out her gun. “But I'm not the only one who noticed.”
Ianto opened the door, ignoring Gwen. He'd noticed Ben looking at him, and it was abvious that it wasn't just because he seemed like the less threatening option than Jack, and he'd seen the flash of jealousy that had crossed Jack's features. Who knew Jack could do jealousy?
They entered the dark flat on high alert. Gwen motioning for Ianto to the end of the corridor, together they swept the flat, making sure that the coast was clear before switching on the lights and making their detailed search of the place.
“What exactly are we looking for?”
“Anything out of the ordinary. These Gopyuil are after Ben for a reason. Jack is hoping that this reason will be found here.” Ianto shrugged off his coat and started searching the sitting room, whilst Gwen took the bedroom.
“Found anything yet?” Gwen called out.
“Apart from a hideous lack in organisation skills, and some dirty cups. No. You?”
“A stash of dvds and magazines that made me feel like we really are invading this guys privacy, not to mention the stuff in his bedside table. No, nothing out of the ordinary.” Gwen sighed as she made her way into the sitting room. “This is a bust.”
Ianto clicked on his comms, “Jack, there's nothing here, we're heading back to the Hub.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The team had convened in the autopsy bay, waiting to hear Owen's findings from the tests he'd run on Ben, his interview, background and apartment search had all come up a bust, hopefully there would be something in his blood work that would help them figure out why the Gopyuil had targeted him. Otherwise it was going to be a lot harder to figure out just what the hell was going on, and how they were going to deal with it.
“He has a DNA marker in his blood stream. It's probably been there for years. It's how they found him, they must be using it for tracking him.” Owen pulled up an image of his findings on the wall of the autopsy bay.
“Does that mean that they've been in contact with him before?”
“Him or his parents, or even his grandparents.” Owen replied to Gwen's question and looked at Jack, “and before you ask, he's completely human, apart from the marker that is.”
“Until we get to the bottom of why the Gopyuil are after him, we've got to keep him protected, and under constant watch.”
“We've got him locked up in the cells. What more is there to do?”
“We can't keep him in the here.” Tosh spoke up from where she had been looking over Owen's findings. “This isn't a tracker we can block, and we can't compromise the Hub.”
“Well what are we supposed to do with him.”
“Thank you for volunteering Owen, you've got first watch.” Jack grinned at the resident doctor, “the Gopyuil's are only likely to make their move when he's alone. We'll all take it in turns, until we get this thing sorted out. No complaints Owen, go get Ben out of the cells, take him for a drink or something. Gwen will take over at 7.”
“Actually Jack,” Gwen bit her lip as she looked at him, “Rhys and I have dinner reservations tonight.”
“I'll do the next shift.” Ianto cut in before Jack could reply to Gwen.
Gwen gave Ianto a grateful look, whilst Jack tried to hide his discomfort over the idea. “Fine. Tosh can you work your magic and see if you can get a trace, anything on this tracker, we need a way of shutting it down, or getting to the Gopyuil before they can get to Ben. Gwen I need you to run more background checks.”
Gwen, Owen and Tosh made their way out of the autopsy bay, Ianto's attempt to leave was hampered by Jack's hand on his arm, stopping him in his tracks. “I was hoping we could finish our date off tonight.”
Ianto looked at Jack regretfully, “I'm sorry, but I know how much Gwen was looking forward to tonight, and I didn't think it would be fair to make Tosh do the shift, seeing as you were bound to give her an impossible task to do.”
Jack pulled Ianto towards him, kissing him lightly, “I hope they appreciate you as much as I do.”
“I fear if they did Sir, then we'd never get any work done around here, and I'm really not that fond of Owen.”
Jack laughed heartily, and raised an eyebrow, “So Gwen and Tosh..”
Ianto put his fingers against Jack's lips, cutting him off, “You're more than enough for me thank you. Besides Rhys would probably castrate me, as would Owen, because despite how he likes to feign disinterest, if I went there with Tosh he'd definitely have something to say.”
“Maybe we should give it a try someday.” Jack leered at Ianto, who playfully pushed him away.
“Get your mind out of the gutter Jack, we've got work to do.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Ianto was greeted by a glum looking Owen, as the door to Ben's flat opened. “Thank fuck you're here, one more minute with that boring twat and I would have left the aliens to it.”
“Lovely to see you too Owen.” Ianto raised an eyebrow. “Jack wants you to swing by the Hub before you go home.”
“Glorious.” Owen mumbled as he made his way past Ianto, getting straight into his car and speeding off.
Ianto made his way into the flat, and found Ben in his sitting room, aimlessly flicking through channels on the TV. He hovered in the doorway a moment, just watching the man he was to guard.
“So..”
“So..” Ianto replied to Ben's statement with an amused smile.
“Round the clock watch.”
“Round the clock.”
Ben sat down on his sofa, and immediately got up again, fidgety and uncomfortable in his own home, and Ianto couldn't help but feel slightly sorry for the guy.
“How long do you reckon it'll be?”
Ianto scratched his head, unsure of what to say. Apart from Owen's grumblings about having to look after that 'twat' they hadn't really come to any sort of conclusion as to how long it would be. Because even with all their technology you couldn't really estimate how long it would be before some aliens decided to try and abduct someone, again.
“We're not sure.” Ianto watched Ben's face fall, “I'm sorry I really am, but we've never had to deal with anything like this before, we don't even know why they want you.”
Ben made an attempt to smile, “well at least it means that I'll get to spend some more time with you.”
“and Owen, Gwen, Tosh and Jack.” Ianto added, trying not to blush.
“Jack and Owen don't like me much.”
“Owen doesn't like anyone much, and Jack has a lot going on at the moment.” Ianto smiled trying to reassure Ben, whilst what he said about Owen was true, he didn't think that, and Jack doesn't like the fact that you seem to fancy me would go down too well.
“Can we, I mean could we get out of here?” Ben looked at Ianto hopefully, “I feel like a prisoner in my own home.”
“Jack says these Aliens will only attack when you're on your own, so I don't see why not.”
“Great” Ben said with a relieved grin as he grabbed his coat, “there's a great pub a couple of streets away.”
Ianto motioned for Ben to take the lead, “lead the way.”
They walked to the pub as it was so near, and even though there was a slight chill in the air, it was a nice night for a walk.
The pub was packed with the Saturday night crowd, and rowdy groups getting a few cheap drinks in before heading to the clubs, and the pubs regulars chatting away about their weeks, complaining about the weather and arguing over the latest football results. It was a friendly, if crowded atmosphere.
Ianto scanned their surroundings, looking out for anything suspicious. Though from the descriptions Gopyuil's would be pretty hard to miss, and wouldn't exactly blend in with the crowd. Though is Jack was correct, which he usually was, the Gopyuil wouldn't try anything in such a public setting.
They made their way to the bar, and despite Ianto's instance that he was on duty and therefore shouldn't be drinking, Ben got them both a pint of beer.
As groups started to move out of the pub and onto other venues, Ben and Ianto managed to grab themselves a couple of tables, sitting in companionable silence for a while, before Ben broached a subject Ianto could tell he'd been wanting to talk about all evening.
“So you and Jack, what's going on there?”
Ianto spluttered into his drink, “He's my boss.”
“Yeah bit there's something else going on there right?”
Ianto sighed, “It's complicated.” Getting up from his seat, he downed the remains of his drink and pointed towards Ben's “same again?”
Ianto returned to the table with their drinks, relived that Ben had seemed to have gotten the hint, and their conversation changed course as Ben talked animatedly about Cardiff's music scene.
Four pints each later and they'd both loosened up. Ianto had stopped checking their surroundings, and his phone ever five minutes, and Ben had started flirting with him. Gwen was definitely right on that front then.
“How come you're the only one of your team who wears a suit? Not that it isn't nice or anything, in fact it really suits you.”
“I'm the more public front of our organisation, well the fake front anyway.” Ianto smiled, “Besides Owen complains any time he has to wear a suit, he'd be even more insufferable if he had to wear one everyday.”
Ben laughed and Ianto joined in, “yeah he's not cheeriest guy is he?”
“Just be glad you didn't get him with a hangover.”
Last orders where called, and Ben got them two more before they were kicked out into the chilly night air. Both of them a little bit drunk and stumbling along the street.
As they neared Ben's house Ianto took a moment to steady himself against a wall, closing his eyes he took a lungful of air, trying to clear his head. When he opened his eyes Ben was stood in front of him, a smile on his lips, they stared at each other for what seemed like forever, before Ben tentatively kissed Ianto, softly at first, but soon gaining momentum as Ianto softened into it.
Ianto was the first to pull away, coming to his senses, “We can't do this.”
“You and Jack right?”
Ianto didn't answer, but pushed himself away from the wall, and continued towards Ben's, as they rounded the corner, they saw Tosh pull up outside Ben's flat, right on time.
If Tosh noticed that Ianto was drunk, she didn't mention it. Leaving Tosh to look after Ben Ianto called a cab and made his way home. Hoping that the next shift he had to do looking after Ben wasn't going to be awkward.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“Have fun tonight?” Jack's voice in the dark hallway of his flat startled Ianto.
“Yes thank you. Ben's good company, despite what Owen may say.” clumsily closing the door Ianto made his way down the hallway, his hand trailing the wall to keep himself upright.
“You're drunk.” there was a hint of accusation in Jack's voice.
“We went to a pub. Ben didn't like feeling like a prisoner in his own home.” Ianto made his way past Jack, a wave of his hand dismissing the accusation.
Grasping at the wall Ianto succeeded in finding the light switch. The light flickered on with a low buzz, the sudden intense brightness assaulting his eyes.
Jack followed Ianto into the Kitchen, leaning against the door frame he watched the young Welshman carefully, “and what if something had happened?”
“Then I would have called for backup. Same as if anything had happened at his flat. Besides you said they'd only try and take him if he was on his own, which he wasn't” Ianto picked up a glass and carefully made his way over to the sink, “jealousy doesn't suit you Jack.”
“and petulance doesn't suit you.” Jack stated crossing his arms over his chest.
Ianto scoffed into his glass of water, before grasping at his kitchen counter, the alcohol in his system getting a little too much to handle. Jack was immediately at his side, holding the younger man steady.
“I don't need your help Jack.” Ianto brushed off Jack's assistance, only to stumble back towards him. “god my head is spinning.”
Pulling Ianto into is embrace Jack kissed his forehead, before quickly drawing back, a flash of hurt crossing his features. “You smell of him.”
“I spent the night in a pub with him, of course some of his smell would have rubbed off on me.”
Without warning Jack grabbed Ianto's shoulders, and pushed him against the work surface. Pressing up against him roughly, capturing his lips in a hot angry kiss.
Ianto tried to protest, but the haze of drunkenness made that difficult, plus he was horny as hell.
Jack broke the kiss, fire in his eyes, and ripped Ianto's shirt open, buttons flying all over the place, whilst Ianto clawed at Jack’s braces hungrily pulling them over Jack’s shoulders.
Ianto went to undo Jack’s trousers, only for his Captain to grab his hands, pinning them above Ianto's head. Jack attacked Ianto’s mouth again, their tongues in a heated battle, as each tried to gain dominance.
Jack released Ianto’s hands as the kiss deepened, their hands were all over each other, clawing at bare flesh. Jack drew blood, and the stinging sensation sent waves of pleasure over Ianto's skin. Moving his lips from Ianto's, Jack traced kisses down the Welshman's neck, nipping at his shoulder, before biting down. Ianto cried out, it hurt yes, but it wasn't unpleasant, and he was well aware that Jack was marking him, making sure that Ben or anyone else for that matter knew he was taken.
Pulling Ianto away from the counter, Jack pulled him towards the kitchen table. Pushing him onto it he hungrily undid Ianto's belt and with hurried need pulled Ianto's trousers off, releasing his rock hard cock.
Undoing his trousers Jack pulled them down over his throbbing erection. Grabbing a tube of lube out of the pocket before his trousers fell to his feet.
Squeezing out the lube Jack covered his fingers, and started to prepare Ianto, relishing the sounds the Welshman was making.
Dipping his head down, Jack ran his tongue up the length of Ianto's shaft, licking off the pre-cum as he reached the top.
With Ianto's moans of appreciation spurring him on, Jack lifted Ianto's legs and entered him roughly.
Ianto was so tight, it made Jack moan, fire flashing in his eyes. Easing himself in completely Jack paused to lock eyes with Ianto, before pounding into him.
Reaching for Ianto's cock, Jack worked him at the same pace. Their groans filled the air as Jack pounded into Ianto hard and fast, and a feral grin spread across Jack’s lips as Ianto spilled his seed, crying out his Captain's name. Jack came soon afterwards, Ianto's shuddering orgasm pushing him over the edge with a loud cry of release
They stayed gripped together in post coitus, their breathing hard and ragged. “You sure know how to make a point Jack.” Ianto spoke as he sat up, resting his head against Jack's shoulder, tired after their exertions, and the alcohol in his system catching up with him.
Releasing himself from Ianto, Jack pulled his trousers back up, and then pulled Ianto away from the table. “You need sleep. We've got a lot of hard work to do tomorrow.”
Helping Ianto to the bedroom, Jack undressed him properly and lay him down on the bed, pulling the sheets over him, Jack kissed him on his forehead and left him to sleep it off.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The next day was as uneventful as the previous, in as far as aliens were concerned at any rate. Tosh came back to the Hub after swapping Ben duties with Gwen, and her and Owen set about trying to figure out just how the were going to fix Ben's problem.
Ianto contented himself with staying out of everyone's way, making them coffee when they needed it, and making sure they had all the files that they wanted.
Jack caught up with him around midday, just as Owen had gone off to 'babysit' Ben with much grumbling.
“About last night..”
“I'm sorry Sir I know I was on duty, I shouldn't have been drinking. I apologise for my actions.”
Jack leant on the wall by Ianto, studying him intently, much like he'd done the night before. “It was unprofessional and could have landed the both of you in a lot of trouble.”
“I was keeping an eye on our surrounding's the whole time.”
“That include the time you were kissing him?” Jack saw the flash of confusion on Ianto's face “I could taste him on you.”
“It was a drunken kiss, that he initiated. I put a stop to it. Is that why you marked me?”
Before Jack could answer Tosh called out across the Hub. “Jack I think I'm onto something.”
“We'll continue this discussion later.”
“There's nothing to discuss Sir.” Ianto shut off the coffee machine and grabbed is coat. “I'll go round to Ben's. Tosh will need Owen here, and I'm on the next shift anyway.”
Jack made to stop Ianto, “I'll send Gwen.”
“Gwen's only just come of shift watching him. It wouldn't be fair.”
Without another word Ianto made his way out of the Hub. Hoping that it wouldn't be too long before they could all just get on with their lives and let Ben get on with his.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Ianto had been at Ben's shop for half an hour, an uncomfortable tension filling the air around them, when Jack waltzed through the door.
“We've got a plan.”
“Tosh and Owen come up with a fix?” Ianto asked, sensing by the look on Jack's face that they hadn't, but not really wanting to face the possibilities of what else Jack may have come up with.
“No, they've hit a snag. But we've got to draw the Gopyuil out. We can't just sit around waiting for something to happen.”
“You want to use me as bait, don't you?” Ben stepped out from behind the counter, his face drained of all colour.
“Tonight we're going to go back to Trinity street, set up in different points and wait for them to strike. If we can take one alive we may be able to get to the bottom of this.”
“and what if they get me before you can get them.”
Ianto placed a hand on Ben's arm, “we won't let that happen.” Looking towards Jack, Ianto could see that his action had got to Jack, his stern features hardening even more, “Jack, a word.”
The two of them moved out of the store, standing outside the shop in front of the window where they could still keep an eye on Ben.
“Jack if you're doing this because of what happened last night.” Ianto started.
“I'm not, I'm doing this because we need to get this dealt with now. Owen and Tosh are working as hard as they can on a fix, but we can't rely on them coming up with something. It's an extremely complex bit of genetic coding, that may not even have a fix.”
“and if none of this works?”
Jack sighed, “then you know we'll have very little options left to us.”
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“Are you sure about this?” Ben looked towards Ianto as they separated from the rest of the group, Owen a few paces behind them.
“Jack wants this over with, and this is the easiest option until Owen and Tosh can come up with a fix for the tracker.” Glancing back Ianto could see Jack looking over at them with a scowl, his Captain's attention diverted by Tosh and her scanner.
“Jack couldn't have picked a better night for this.” Owen complained behind them, pulling his Jacket tighter around him, trying to keep at least some of the Welsh rain at bay.
Ianto and Ben ignored Owen, paying the rain little attention, their minds focused on the task at hand. Though for all they new this entire night could turn out to be a bust. It was all reliant on the Gopyuil's making their move, and that wasn't something you could easily predict or control.
“We're in position.” Gwen's voice came over the comms, and it pained Ianto that it wasn't Jack.
Owen had found himself a spot in a doorway, looking as glum as ever. Whilst Ianto and Ben secured them in doorways of their own. Ianto and Owen had Ben in their sights.
“We are too.” Owen answered back.
Once they were all in position radio silence was to be maintained, unless somebody saw anything suspicious.
The minutes ticked by, and then the hours. The rain got worse and Ianto could just imagine how cranky Owen was getting. He sent a reassuring smile over to Ben every so often, but he knew it wouldn't be helping much.
It was approaching two in the morning before when their rift monitors buzzed into life. Ianto was on high alert now, from the shadow of his doorway he scanned up and down the alley. His tranquilliser gun, ready at his side. They'd agreed that would be the best and safest option for capturing the Gopyuil alive.
It didn't take long before the lumbering shape of the Gopyuil came into view moving towards Ben at a fast speed. Moving out of his hiding place Ianto took aim at the creature, his dart hitting it square in the chest. Before he had a chance to reload though, there was a bright flash of green and he was sent hurtling through the air, and smacking against a corrugated metal fence.
Ianto was vaguely aware that he was sat, no slouched on cold, wet, pavement. His ears were ringing and there was a searing pain in his shoulder. As he opened his eyes, his vision blurred.
“Ianto I need you to hold stay still, whilst I check you out.” Owen had been the first to reach him, rucksack, open and medical kit out faster than Ianto had ever seen the doctor do before.
“and here I thought I wasn't your type.” Ianto managed a grin before gripping onto Owen as pain ripped through his body.
“Owen what the hell happened?” Jack's shout travelled down the alleyway, distracting Ianto as Owen ripped his shirt open, to get a better look at his injuries.
“That Gopyuil had an explosive device. It triggered, when Ianto hit it with a dart”
Jack crouched down in front of Ianto, worry etched across his face. “Ianto, Ianto look at me.” Jack had turned panicked. Ianto was coughing up blood.
“Gwen get the SUV now!” Jack shouted down the alleyway, where Gwen was helping Ben to his feet. His Captain's panicked voice was the last thing that Ianto heard as his world went black.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The clinical smell of the Hub's medical room made Ianto's throat sting. He hated this room, although is was better than being holed up in a hospital. His ribs protested and pain shot through his body as he tried to take a deep breath, he'd remember not to do that again any time soon.
“Welcome back. We were wondering when you'd wake up.”
“Who won the pot?” Ianto asked tilting his head towards Gwen.
Gwen smiled and took Ianto's hand carefully, “Well despite Owen's insistence that he's a doctor therefore he knew when you'd wake up. Jack won. You couldn't have stayed asleep just one more day?”
“I can always go back to sleep if you like.”
“and make us suffer through another day of cranky Jack? No thanks.”
Ianto squeezed Gwen's hand softly and smiled apologetically, “How long has it been?”
“Six days. The explosion got you pretty badly.”
Ianto groaned, he just knew what kind of state the Hub would be in, his fellow team-mates completely useless when it came to tidying up after themselves or filing away paperwork properly, and if Owen had broken his coffee machine there would be hell to pay.
“and Ben?”
“He's fine, suffered a minor concussion, and a few scrapes and bruises, but apart from that....” Gwen averted her eyes from Ianto, looking guiltily at the floor.
“You retconned him didn't you?”
“Tosh and Owen managed to inhibit the trace. Tosh says it'll need renewing every 6 months. It's flushing out the sequencers or something or rather. He should be completely clear of the marker in two years.” Gwen smiled reassuringly at Ianto, “He'll be fine, and we'll still be keeping an eye on him, from a distance at least.”
“Where's Jack?”
“He got called out to weevil attack, he should be back soon, he's hardly left your side.” Gwen watched Ianto carefully, “You should get some more rest sweetheart, Jack will be here when you wake up.”
Kissing Ianto lightly on the forehead, Gwen made her way out of the room to go find Owen.
It was a few hours later when Ianto next woke up, and much to his disappointment he was alone in the room. With great care and difficulty he gently manoeuvred himself out of the bed, his bare feet hitting the cold tiles of the floor. Gingerly he stood up, he legs shaking with the strain, and weak from the few days of being out of use.
Over on the far side of the room he found a clean set of clothes, and taking more time than he would have liked, due to his injuries he put them on, and made his was slowly and carefully out of the room.
The Hub was empty, he checked his watch, it was early afternoon, they must have been on a job.
Hitting a few buttons on the nearest computer Ianto stepped onto the invisible lift, letting it take him up to street level. There were a few people mingling about on the plass, enjoying a rare day of sunshine, and the pleasant surroundings of the bay. Forgetting the effect it had on him earlier Ianto breathed in the fresh air, his ribs protesting immediately.
He sat down on a nearby bench, closing his eyes as he fought away the pain the took over his body. He didn't even notice that he was no longer alone on the bench until the heavy weight of Jack's coat fell upon his shoulders.
“You shouldn't be up and about.”
“I hate the medical bay, and I think I've spent far too much time in their recently, albeit unconscious.”
“You were right by the way. I was jealous, and I pushed that stupid plan because of it.” Jack looked out across the plass, unable to look at Ianto.
“It wasn't an entirely stupid plan Jack. We drew the Gopyuil out after all.”
“and it almost got you killed.” Jack turned to face Ianto, the extent of his injuries even more apparent in the natural sunlight.
“Only because I was an idiot.” Ianto looked at Jack and took his hand in his, lacing their fingers together. “Can we make sure our next date goes off without a hitch. I'd rather not have another spell in the medical bay afterwards.”
Jack laughed, the tension lifting from the both of them. “Deal, but how do you feel about ending it hot an sweaty in the autopsy bay?”
Ianto raised an eyebrow, “and have Owen catch us again?”
“Did you happen to catch a glimpse of your coffee machine as you let the Hub?”
