Sooo I don't have much time to doink around in Photoshop lately, because lol senior thesis plus lol honors research = way too much time spent in the corner staring at the piles of reading on my desk and wondering if it's too late to go major in something else. I haven't been making many icons outside of manga_battle lately, and those I can't post until the competition ends. (Wonderful icontest, by the way, you should all go check it out. :Db)

However, ririkit signed up for an account on Niko Video, which is basically Japan's answer to YouTube, and we discovered that not only are there more goofy anime parodies than you can shake a stick at, but the quality is also a little nicer than YouTube. Which meant capping was in order. Which led to...well.

(I should probably also note here that the Black Cat icons are recolors. Because 1) I am a dork, 2) it was for RP purposes, and 3) I think Rinslet makes a much sexier blonde than a...what do you call someone with lilac hair, anyway?)

Making vague attempts to learn to actually shade when I color manga. On occasion, I almost succeed!

This is a pretty simple batch, because I think that quite simply, if you need to throw brushes and textures all over a picture of Abraham Lincoln punching mecha-Hitler to make it look good, you're doing it wrong.

If you're unfamiliar with the source material: Tales from the Bully Pulpit is a rather awesome comic about the adventures of Teddy Roosevelt and the ghost of Thomas Edison, who take their trusty time machine and go stop the Nazis from taking over Mars. It is wonderful. :3

So apparently renaming from aufleuchten to technological has had the awesome unexpected side effect of breaking all of my image links (since I've been using my LJ image space to upload icons).

Browsing this journal will be kind of lolarious until I fix this. I'll probably sit down in a minute here and start playing with find/replace, but whether I have the attention span to do it all now remains to be seen.

I think the first pair of icons probably deserve some background information. Last week, while I was sitting in history class, my entire college campus went on lockdown. We had no idea what was going on, but people were getting text messages from friends in other buildings mentioning rumors of someone carrying a rifle.

As we later learned from the email updates that we couldn't read from class, it was an umbrella. (It was a very rainy day.)

The text on both of those icons is lifted verbatim from the email updates the university sent out. I'm not sure what this says about my sense of humor.

I'm not actually positive about whether that last guy's name is Sawamura; he's in Spiral Alive, which I haven't actually read yet. I asked around and the best I've been able to get from other Spiral fans is that he's probably named Sawamura but most people aren't really positive. (If I could just get ahold of a page where someone says his name, I'd be in business. Oh well.)

(And incidentally, I am very sad that my single favorite image I've seen from Spiral Alive is ill-suited for icons. Kanone with a hugeass gun slung over his shoulder, holding up a cute kitty and making the :D face. Gotta love them psychopaths. ♥)

[tutorial] random coloring bullshit

Another case of "I have no real reason to make a tutorial except that I really liked this icon and I'm kind of bored." It's more interesting than revising my anthropology paper amirite???

So. Today, we're going from this...

...to...

...this!

I use Photoshop CS, but I don't think I do anything that isn't easily translatable to PSP if you know what you're doing, so. Onward!

My source image is this screencap taken from an episode of Spiral. Orange really isn't your color, Eyes. Let's see if we can do something about that.

First things first, crop that fucker down to manageable size. It's all a matter of taste what stays and what goes, but I only kept half his face because that floats my boat. Resize, and you'd probably do well to go ahead and sharpen it up a bit, too.

I start most of my icons the same way: duplicate that base, and set it to soft light on 100%.

It's a little brighter, but that orange still isn't doing much for me. So I poke around in my textures folder and unearth this one, by colortone:

Let's try that on color burn, at 100%, shall we?

...well, at least it's not as orange.

I'm not wild about that contrast, though, so I fumble for another texture, again from colortone:

And that one goes on soft light at 100%, like so.

The colors are feeling a little deeper, a little more interesting now, but it's still orange! This won't do. So I flail around my gradients pallette and fish something out - yep, this gradient came from a set by colortone.

Exactly how that comes out is going to depend on a lot on how you click and drag the little gradient tool. Long stroke, short, angle? Whatever. Do what feels right.

When we set that to overlay, at 100%, we get this:

Now we're onto something.

At this point, I flattened the image, merging all the existing layers into a single base. I need it all on one layer in order to pull off my next step.

Take that now-flattened image and duplicate the layer. The new layer, we're going to set to Gaussian Blur, at 2.0 pixels.

You can have a field day playing with the blend modes with a fuzzy layer like this - some icons you'll only find one or two really work for, but some you'll find you can set to practically any mode and get something cool. For this one, we're going to go with multiply, then turn the opacity down to 50%.

It darkens the colors up nicely...but perhaps a bit more than we really want. So I pull out another texture - yet again, from colortone.

And this one goes on at soft light, 100%, to give us the final product!
