Will I be the only ole' broad?

Name: Ramona
Age: 19
Location: Pensacola
Major/Major of choice: Illustration
Graudation: 2011 from junior college

Reason for considering FIT: I'm finishing my AA in Art at a junior college here, and I'm interested in entering the field as an independant illustrator, comic author, and character designer. I'm interested in taking advantage of the opportunities in New York. The cost of attendance at FIT also attracts me, I'm not interested in being in hundreds of thousands of dollars in dept from going to art school for a career that I essentially didn't need to go to college for in the first place.

Questions about FIT: I'll be almost 21 when I enter the AAS illustration program, and I'm a bit worried that I'm going to be the only student my age. My hope is that I'll be transferred into the 1 year program for my credits, and only have to spend 3 years on my two degrees. I was just wondering if you or anyone you know is an older student attending FIT? Or maybe if your an older student planning on entering?
I want to find friends at FIT, but I'm not so sure I'll be happy being surrounded by people 3-4 years younger than me.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Just see if I can get an answer or two.

Name: Raekella

Location: Washington, DC

Graudation: Hoping for 2012-2013.

Reason for wanting to Transfer to FIT: To be frank, there really isn't much of a career in Fashion in the DC Metropolitan area. D: And I would like to get a feel of campus life in another state, cheaper tuition than going to a private art school, and everything else, overall I think it is great school to attend, based on my research....etc.

Questions about FIT: Oh boy, if I would have found this last year. D: I had applied to FIT for the Fall of 2010 last year, but I decided to withdraw my application, because of my personal life had to come first, and I had to put my portfolio on the back burner. I officially started sketching at the beginning of this year, and I do not have a lot of experience in fashion sketching. Never had one art class either. I have bought everything from Fashion Design books like this one I purchased:

http://www.amazon.com/Fashion-Artist-Design-Sandra-Burke/dp/0958239177/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278472314&sr=8-9

and this one:

http://www.amazon.com/New-Fashion-Figure-Templates-Over/dp/0713490330/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1278472314&sr=8-7

as my guide to help me make fashion sketches. Sometimes I trace the figure if the picture appears to be an 9 or 10 head figure for a quick sketch. My medium of choice is colored pencils, but I have an issue with shading, drawing folds on dresses, and drawing shear fabric. I took a basic sewing class, and have bought a DVD on how sew cuffs, blouses, etc. (it wasn't that much either! Cost was that of a regular DVD.)

My main question is, are there major changes to the FIT Portfolio for the Fashion Design Program? I still have the prompt that was sent to me, I am assuming it will not be completely the same, but I have been sketching a couple of designs and writing essays similar to that of the ones for the portfolio, so if needed all I would have to do is tweak it a bit here and there. Also are reconstruction of clothing allowed???

Is it really that major, if you can draw folds, and have limited art supplies? I am planning on buying more stuff, after I start working next week and when I start school again in August, but I am trying to work with what I got, since I am going to have to do either the mail in option or the online option.

I am willing to show some of my sketchwork online to someone, but I think that's a little sketchy, even if they are watermarked. I just probably just upload them to photobucket if someone would like to know what I am talking about when it comes to my sketchbook.

Sorry I killed my post with it being wordy, I just really want to go to FIT. :)

Is anyone here applying to fit for a second bachelors?

I am a year away from finishing my undergrad studies as a Psych student (I am 20), however certain life circumstances are making me question whether or not that's really what I'd like to do. Drawing and designing have always been passions of mine and I am considering applying to FIT once I am finished.

I applied this year but due to lack of resources could not finish my portfolio in time. :( They sent me a letter saying I could reapply in the future.

Winterim classes

Hi all,

Have any of you taken courses during Winterim? I've never taken winterim classes before, so I have some questions:

I've been trying to register online, and all of the sections for the course I want to take is indicated as "SECTION CLOSED." I know that this means that it's full.

If I go to the registration center on the first day of classes, January 4th, is there a chance I might be able to get in? Perhaps someone will drop? Is there a waiting list?

In-person design test

Hello all.

I've been worrying about the drawing portion of the in-person evaluation. It says I must bring my preferred mediums to the evaluation, but I do not know what else to expect. I understand why it is part of the evaluation process, but the idea of having to draw something on-the-spot in font of a review committee is completely nerve-wracking.

Can anyone please share their experiences and tell me what I should expect?

New member, but a lurker since the beginning of the summer.

Name: Laura
Age: 20
Location: NYC
Major/Major of choice: Fashion Design
Graduation year: Uh, I don't know.
Reason for wanting/going to go to FIT: I want to go into Costume Design and FIT is the first step towards that goal.
Any straight off questions/concerns/comments about FIT: I'll be graduating from my Community College in the Spring with an A.A in Liberal Arts. I already spoke to Colette Wong at the Open House about the possibility of applying for the one year A.A.S program FIT offers (she said it's better to apply to the two year directly, because if they think you have the qualifications for the one year they'll transfer you over). I've gotten the specs for my portfolio so I'm working on that. My major concern is my GPA, however.

My first year of college (I graduated high school in '07) I was academically dismissed from the private college I was attending. I went to the Community College I'm in now because a) build up my GPA and b) cost. Sadly, my exiting GPA from my first school was a 1.2 and I currently have a 2.6. I understand they want a strong portfolio and all that jazz, but admissions still gives a thumbs up or down towards applicants due to their academia.

I guess I wanted to see what other people's GPA situation is? Also, is anyone going to National Portfolio Day? Thanks so much, lovelies!

EDIT:: I also have no idea what to color my designs with (I know, it sounds so silly!). I feel like colored pencil would be frowned upon so any reccs on mediums would be greatly appreciated!

I am currently a forensic psychology major but because of lifestyle changes between the time I applied for uni and now, that isn't the career my life is suited for any more. I really want to major in fashion design. I have a lot of unique, eccentric, offbeat ideas for outfits and I'm always told that I have a great fashion sense. I had a 4.0 GPA in high school and am doing very well in college. I got a 2070 on the SAT. However, I'm just learning how to sketch well and can't sew. I'm usually a fast learner and will put a lot of effort into this, but... can anyone give me any tips or advice on what to do?

I really need to get into FIT because I can't continue with my forensic psych degree and fashion is my other biggest passion in life.

I'm applying for Spring 2010. The deadline is October 1st, which gives me a lot of time to complete and perfect a portfolio. Is the fashion design programme really difficult to get into? Can anyone give me any advice?

Anyone here applied for the presidential scholars program? It asks that I send a copy of my SAT/ACT scores.

So if I already sent my scores to FIT through the collegeboard and act website, have I done that? B/c I read on the facebook community or something that they want just a printout scores. Er... yeah, I'm confused.

So.. am I completely out of luck?

I applied about a week ago for F.I.T. using the SUNY website. I am a transfer student and somehow I completely forgot what kind of dates colleges use for acceptance! I feel like I have applied incredibly too late. It is February the 5th and I have not even gotten my confirmation email from F.I.T. for applying with SUNY. I am currently a physics major in Alabama... I realized that this is just not at all what I want and I have to get out. I want to major in photography, specifically for fashion. I also feel like I have a false sense of confidence about my talent. I thought I was really good and that getting accepted would not be that hard, but my parents have been telling me otherwise -.-

Below is a link to my online portfolio at Flickr. If anyone has seen some of the work from the fashion photography scene at F.I.T. how does my work measure up? granted I have never take any sort of photography class ever. I went to a science magnet school for highschool and got a 33 on my ACT

http://www.flickr.com/photos/16271245@N03/

Communication Design/Toy Design

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone here goes/went to FIT for Communication Design or Toy Design?
I want to get my BFA in Toy Design, but I was wondering which AAS program is best to prepare for Toy Design? I figured Communication Design or Illustration.

Also, how hard is it to get into the Communication Design program? I'm afraid I do not have a strong enough portfolio and need tips on what to put in it and how to make it incredible!
Thank you so much to anyone who can help!
Fall '09

When do they start accepting applications for fall '09? I want to apply as early as possible! Their web site confuses me.

Also, the graphic design major isn't open for kids directly from high school, right? So does that mean that I have to take a two-year Communications ASA and then the a four-year Graphic Design BFA? Or will Graphic design only be two years as well? Absbgabaiwbkjvs! Help, I'm so confuzed!

Is the 3rd floor of CoEd traditional style rooms?

I requested all suite styles, but I think I got a traditional style room.
I really only want a suite, if I request a room change to a suite, do you think it would be honored?

It's already the 22nd and I still have no news- I've been checking my mailbox everyday and I'm totally frustrated. I really want to know one way or the other so I can plan my life LOL. Anyone else still expecting their letter?

Does anyone know why it is significantly cheaper to live in Nagler Hall as opposed to the other halls, or why COED is more expensive (and not even that nice?)

Are Nagler rooms smaller or something?
I'm trying to decide on housing preferences for fall :D

Grad Students?

Hey everyone,

Has anyone applied/is applying to any of the grad programs? (Are the programs typically small? How many people generally apply for the grad programs because I was wondering how selective they are.)

For those who have registered (for grad or undergrad) I have a question. I was looking at Fall '08's class schedule and I was wondering what 'R' meant under days? I thought maybe it was for recitation, but I don't know.

I don't know if this applies for grad students, but are there orientations where everyone can meet each other before classes start?
