Character Analysis Meme

❦ BASIC STATISTICS
Name: Clopin Trouillefou
Age: 46
Distinguishing/Hidden features: Big, long nose and a very minute, wiry frame
Style: …colorful…
Greatest flaw: He’s very condescending. He’ll relent technical knowledge to someone who shows they’re an expert in something, but privately he thinks everyone is just a rube waiting to be swindled.
Best quality: Very charismatic.

❦ BACKGROUND
Character's Financial/Social Situation: Perpetually broke. His wealth swells and sinks like a tidepool. He makes a modest sum performing in the streets (mostly for children). On top of that, he collects tribute from his Truands and the gypsies which occasionally stay in the Court. Then after that, he accepts odd-jobs from anyone who will pay him.
And then he blows it all the next night.
Educational Background: He has been classically trained in ballet, gymnastics and acting.
Very recently, he’s been picking up reading and scant Latin from one of his Truands, Pierre Gringoire.
Family & Relationships:
Father- (presumed dead) Opinionated and conservative. Clopin never got along well with him. Throughout his childhood his father worked valiantly to mold his son into a respectable human being. Then, when he got sick of Clopin, he tossed him physically out of the house.
Mother- (presumed dead) Boisterous and rotund, kept her fortune-telling customers on their toes with insulting patter. For the first ten years of Clopin’s life, he could be found somewhere around her skirt. Gave him a deck of cards as a joke when he was kicked out of the house. <strike>Fortune telling is, traditionally, girl’s work.</strike>
La Esmeralda- Whenever her parents were sick of hearing her screaming, she'd go to Auntie Clopin. Auntie Clopin let La Esmeralda get away with alot more than her parents ever did.
Judge Claude Frollo- His opposite number. Clopin enjoys mocking him.
Romantic interest- ALL THE ROMANTIC INTERESTS.
Character's Spiritual/Religious Beliefs: Monotheistic only as a knee-jerk reaction. He’ll pray when he’s in trouble or curse God when his luck is unbelievably bad. See also; the Superstitious fill.

❦ EMOTIONAL/MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Any Mental Illnesses? Clopin is a bit of a sociopath. Everyone he keeps around is useful in some way, however small.
He’s also incredibly obsessive-compulsive. He has kept his physical appearance as rigidly static as the years will allow, and each one of his suits has a very specific use.
And of course, he’s grown comfortable with his regular hallucinations. He has no honest idea whether or not his puppet is alive.
How does Character see himself/herself? Cutthroat gypsy scum.
How does Character believe he/she is perceived by others? Crazy and childish
How would others describe your Character? Crazy, childish, maybe just a little bit evil.
What is the spine of your character? Clopin is a coward, but he’ll be the first to rise to a challenge because he doesn’t trust anyone else to do it.
Physically, very bendy.
What is the mental process of your character? Scattered. He’s so used to keeping an eye on everything that he can’t remember the details for anything in particular. He has his own ways of remembering who is who and how they’re important to him, but sometimes he needs something to remind him.
He’s gotten very good over the years of identifying who is and isn’t important to his overall plans.
(PROTIP: If Clopin gives you awkward, uncomfortable answers or tends to keep his distance from you, it means you have nothing to offer him. He has no plans for you, so he doesn’t know how to act around you.)
What would most embarrass this character? Being proven wrong. He hates that.
What does the character want out of life? All he wants is Paris. If he could buy the whole city, he would. And all he wants from Paris is to use it like his personal puppet-theatre, pulling strings to make the whole city dance. Is that so terrible?
What would the character like to change in his/her life? This question implies regret.
What motivates this character? Keeping crime in Paris running smoothly.
What frightens this character? Entrapment and death.
What makes this character happy? Colors, balloons, music, an audience, a crowd, travelling, puppets, song, women, men, wine, freedom, Paris, when someone gets the joke, or when someone IMPROVES on the joke

❦ FAVORITE
Food: Rum Baba
Color: Purple. Royal purple.
Season of the year: Spring
Movie:
TV Show: What is a teevee? How do you show it?

❦ STATEMENTS
I believe when we die, we: “Let’s talk about something else, shall we?”
The greatest thing one person can do for another is: “Save their life.”
The ugliest thing I ever saw was: “Have you ever seen the plague pits? Those are disgusting. Once I saw an old man try to crawl out, so I poked him with a big stick.”
The most beautiful thing I ever saw was: “The first night I ever spent in Paris, I climbed to the roof and looked out,”
I am superstitious about: “Thank God when your luck is good.” Clopin is not a fan of superstition.

Clopin has spent all day hiding from the Drone. He thought she was pretty, when he first met her. After the first five minutes, he thought she was trying too hard to be perfect. After about ten minutes, he realized there was nothing beneath the surface. She was a beautiful blonde automaton, operating only how she was expected to, and nothing more.

When he came home from a full day of exploring, he found a catalog book. Flipping through it, he found a list. The pictures were framed tastefully, with patterns to enhance their appeal, but the objects themselves were familiar.

[Clopin's Catalog List:

15 box tops: Earring
20 box tops: Hat
30 box tops: Gloves
40 box tops: Mask
50 box tops: Puppet
70 box tops: Scythe]

Clopin closes the book, goes outside, and climbs up the side of the house to sit on the roof. He needs altitude to think.

001| Intro

Clopin woke up in a bed that wasn't his, with all his gold- except for the fillings in his teeth- taken from him. His clothing is gone, his puppet is gone, and in it's place are strange fabrics with complicated stitching. There were three types of tunic in the drawers, but after a little trial and error, Clopin finally figured out how to work the one with buttons on the front.

When he tried to leave, he found pictures in the hallway of himself with two children and a wife. The wife was pretty and blonde, and it must be her who made the house smell so strange. He couldn't place the smell, but it was unnatural and artificially sweet.

Clopin wasted no time leaving. He found shoes which fit him, and walked out the front door.

He found himself in a house, with a yard and a white picket fence. Next to his was a house just like it, and it's mirror image sat across the street. The sunlight shone through the leaves in the cool summer morning, and the wind whistled through the peaceful streets.

Clopin went back inside, dug out a sturdy bag buried in foul-smelling white balls, and began to pack provisions for a trip of undefined length.

You're quite the storyteller!

In love, you are quite the charmer. Ooh! He’s an acrobat! Does that count?
Canon history: In late- 13th century Paris, Clopin is King of the Gypsies. This title is open to broad interpretation, and Clopin has decided it gives him the right to oversee criminal enterprises within Paris.
He settles disputes between the Truands, divides territory between gangs, and judges wayward criminals through his own particular brand of justice. He makes a simple living as a clown for neighborhood children, but when the opportunity arises, he commits petty thievery and cold-blooded murder without the bat of an eyelash.
AU history: Clopin is still a Romani crime lord in Paris, but the difference is- he has seen the Mist. When he heard of it, he went to go see it. He watched the edges of it devour a city- he has followed the tales of survivors of the Mist, he has researched the trail of clues scientists leave for him.
The Mist strikes a chord in him which is almost nostalgic- devouring shadows are an ancient Romani myth. The childhood wound which old superstition leaves behind has long since cauterized, but something within him remembers the fear he felt when his mother told him what the stink of marime would invite to him.
He has not paid strict attention to zakono in years. Now, he finds himself re-enacting the old cleansing rituals he had dismissed when he became an adult. He feels blasphemous, hypocritical, and just a little bit safer.
When he returned to Paris, he found a letter offering him a job in a new, exciting place he had never been before. He has heard the Academy mentioned during his studies- even if it isn’t in his field of practice, he is eager to hear as much as possible about this Mist.
Personality: Clopin has enough joi de vivre to share. He is a natural performer, capable of riling an audience any which way he so pleases. He is particularly fond of laughter. He enjoys everything that makes life worth living, which makes him very bad at keeping money. Fortunately, he’s just as good at making money as he is at spending it. As hedonistic as he tends to be, he is capable enough of being responsible to keep the Romani of France together.
Despite his cheerful, outward persona, Clopin is cynical to the bone. This comes from a life of crime and persecution. He is prone to bouts of cruelty and callousness. As silly and energetic as he seems on the surface, do not once expect to shock or startle him. Do not threaten him- he has been threatening people since before you were born. He knows all the tricks, he has done all the scams.
Clopin’s dislike for authority is legendarily ironic. He keeps his own people in line while despising tradition and positions of power. He uses his own status as crime lord as a vehicle for parodying proper statesmen and clergy members. He has little to no respect for anyone- particularly people who demand respect, but even those who do not. His own audience has been the butt of many of his jokes.

As goofy as he acts, as easy as he is to talk to, there is something sinister lurking beneath the surface. But don’t worry- he won’t hurt you. Probably.
Greatest Fear: Clopin fears lots of things. Entrapment, death and authority make it into his top three. The immediacy of his own mortality is the worst thing you can present him with. Keep in mind, though, that when frightened, he doesn’t curl away into a corner- he lashes out.

❦ Writing
Third person writing sample:
Clopin sits cross-legged on his desk and watches the students file in. They cast glances at him as they take their seats- some take out their pens and hold them in preparation to take notes, other sit and wait for him to tell them what to do.
When the last student finds a seat, he stretches his legs out before him and walks over to close the door.
The students watch him. He smiles at them.
“When a magician arrives on stage, what is the first thing your eye is drawn to?” He asks. “His hands? Perhaps. You have been prewarned to note them before accepting his skill in the field. But it is not his hands which invite you to come close enough to inspect them, are they? It is the man himself who draws you in,”

The children are expecting something from him- a flower to grow from his palm, a dove to appear from under his hat. He gives them none of these things.
“The actor must create himself at the start of every show,” Clopin said. “He must build the character- he must excite the audience’s pity- and on top of all these other feats of human brilliance, he must also remember his lines,”
A dull titter of laughter.
“The actor performs an unseen act of balance while he performs, forever in danger of toppling over to expose the simple man underneath,” Clopin said, smile broadening. “Now who is prepared to perform first for the class? I hope you are good at improvisation,”
The students are struck dumb with fear. Clopin’s smile widens further.
He looks around the classroom for his first victim. The students in the front row drop their heads in the desperate hope that he will see beyond him, but eventually he finds a wide-eyed red-head staring directly at him.
He points.
“Stand, boy,” He orders, and stand he so does.
Across the classroom is a young girl hidden behind a curtain of hair staring intensely at the desk. She will hate him for this moment, but he can’t stop himself from snapping his fingers for her attention.
Like magic, she knows instinctively to look up, and rises without complaint. The two students look terrified.
Clopin is going to love this job.

First person writing sample:
Bonjour, Academy! May I introduce myself as Clopin Trouillefou, King of Truands, successor to the Grand Coesre, supreme ruler of the Kingdom of Argot, the Duke of Little Egypt, and your Professor of Theatrical Theory!
To all of my dear little thespians; make it quickly to my classroom if you want a seat, for Clopin does not wait forever.
Class begins at 1 o’clock sharp- and if I am late, then I am late, but I don’t suggest being late yourself! Clopin has his ways of seeing tardy students before arriving himself.
</cut>
