Posting was moderated but no more! Membership, however, is moderated to prevent Russian spam. I'll likely approve new members within 24 hours of receiving their request to join.

Hopefully this new style is easy to read/navigate. Let me know if you have any issues viewing it!

Now - with all that out of the way, does anyone have any suggestions as to the direction this community should take? Are the rules in the profile sparse? If you have anything you'd like added, please let me know. I'll review it and probably stick it in there.

It pains me to see this community dwindling in activity. DL really doesn't get enough attention these days.

Dragonlance - Quest for meaning

In preparation for my panel at Marcon, I'm trying to identify a unifying storyline or theme to tie the novels together. This is what I've found:

The core storyline - The intertwined lives of a human family from Solace, the elven royal families, and Conclave wizards, bound together by the trickster figure of Tasselhoff Burrfoot.

Core ideology - "We are not the stuff of which heroes are made." -Tanis Half-Elven. The best of Dragonlance involves characters who are not professional "heroes," but who have to step up to the plate when the need arises.

Recurring theme - The conflicts and interplay between religion, society and magic.

Other ideas?

Over on dragonlanceforums.com there is a cute thread about what if LEGO did DL like Star Wars and Harry Potter for a game system. People are posting what scenes or books theyd want to see get done. Its cute since if you've seen the LEGO games you know what I mean. Begs the question, what scene, books, trilogies (minus Chronicles of course since that would HAVE to get done) would you want to see in LEGO form?

Here's the forum question btw if anyone wanted to look at it
http://www.dragonlanceforums.com/forums/showthread.php?20435-LEGO-Dragonlance

Also there's a thread that started out midly serious about Raislin and why after the test he got Red robes, the thread has derailed into now comparing Raistlin to Batman and Anakin Skywalker, its quite funny.
http://www.dragonlanceforums.com/forums/showthread.php?20400-Why-did-Raistlin-start-as-a-Red-Robe
One thing I did find interesting is Margaret Wies says in thread that people at TSR freaked out when she and Tracy changed Raistlin from Red to Black at the end of Chronicles, since "heroes just dont do that sort of thing".

Just thought these might be fun to talk about :D

I got my friend reading the dragonlance books and as she finished "Dragons of the highlord skies" she told me the book said "taking with them [from Icereach that is] the dragon orb and another artifact they found in the castle, one that turned out to be far greater value." She asked me what the artifact was, but I couldn't remember so I looked in "Dragons of winter night" and all I found was "And they carried something more important [as apposed to the dragon orb] thought they did not realize it at the time they found it."

Does anyone remember what the important artifact is? But in Amber and Iron, which takes place and was published later, he still bears the marks of his battle with Chaos, and has an un-blown-off, unburned face.

So since there are no more Dragonlance novels coming out, which version do we accept as canon? My vote: keep the marks of Chaos (prematurely aged, white streaks in black hair), but still have an intact head and not become the Phantom of Wayreth. However, I'd prefer to know the "official version."

Minor question, but it's been bugging me.

Dragon's Bluff

I just finished reading Dragon's Bluff, the novel in which Ulin Majere and his betrothed (a sorceress who taught at Palin's Academy of Sorcery) travel to Flotsam to reclaim the body of her father only to be embroiled in a mystery.

It's a great book, but did anyone else notice that it has the same plot as Blazing Saddles? In both, the main characters are sentenced to hang for crimes they didn't commit only to be reprieved to become sheriffs, because for political reasons they are inappropriate (in Blazing Saddles, because he's a black man, in Dragon's Bluff, because Lucy seems a "weak and ineffectual" woman), and both end up using their wits and street smarts to actually be good sheriffs, despite a lack of sheriffy qualifications.

Crysania Legends debate

Here's one I've never seen argued: Given the opportunity, would Crysania have slept with Raistlin in Legends?

I'd say no way.

Crysania was a celibate cleric on a mission from Paladine. She did fall in love with Raistlin, but that's not why she was travelling with him. As a cleric, she wasn't free to act on her love, and I don't see her willing to break her vows.

The key scene where this can be debated is War of the Twins. Raistlin, who is inexperienced, and Crysania, who is a virgin, accidentally fall into a kiss and nature starts to take its course. Neither one of them really have a clue what's going on. Raistlin thinks he wants to sleep with her, but then decides that if she breaks her vows she's not much use to him as a cleric who can help him destroy a god. So he assaults her and accuses her of trying to seduce him.

Here's the problem I have with this. Even if Raistlin had decided to sleep with Crysania, Crysania would likely have stopped him the second his hand went under her robe. That was probably her first kiss. She was not ready to lose her virginity, even if she hadn't made a promise to Paladine.

So I would chalk up Raistlin's accusation as projection.

Thoughts?

In the Legends trilogy, how does time travel work?
