Abstract

Liquid water is the quintessential ecological requirement for all life on Earth. All organisms require liquid water to grow or reproduce. It is not surprising, then, that the search for life beyond the Earth is often characterized by a “follow the water” strategy. NASA/Ames’ astrobiologist Chris McKay takes a look at Earth’s exotic life, and how it might shed light on the possibilities of life in distant oceans.
