Let's get loud – #JournalismOutLoud! 📣 What happens when 1,400 media professionals from 110 countries come together? For two days, the DW Global Media Forum #GMF26 became a space for new ideas, meaningful conversations, and fresh perspectives on the future of journalism. With more than 160 speakers across 50+ sessions, the 19th edition of the conference lived up to its promise of amplifying the role of journalism in an increasingly polarized and fragmented world. From thought-provoking debates to moments of celebration and connection, the forum demonstrated why independent journalism matters today more than ever. And yes, there was still plenty of time to have some fun along the way. 🙌 🎬 Relive the highlights in our aftermovie. And if you couldn't join us this year, head to our YouTube channel to watch recordings of the panels and plenary sessions (link in the comments ⤵️).

#DeutscheWelle

A day on the ground covering the World Cup for DW ⚽ #DWAmbassador and trainee Emilio Reynoso reported from his home country, Mexico, during the World Cup. But his focus wasn't on the action on the field. For DW's Spanish, English and Arabic audiences, Emilio explored how the tournament was shaping life across the country; from Mexico's accessibility commitments and the event's social impact to the atmosphere surrounding the world's largest single-sport event. 🎬 Follow Emilio behind the scenes in this short reel and dive deeper into his reporting on accessibility at the World Cup (https://lnkd.in/e2EhEKMk) and the issue of missing persons in Mexico (https://lnkd.in/eNFw2wPX).

Today at the DW Global Media Forum in Bonn, Claire Lai accepted the DW Freedom of Speech Award 2026 on behalf of her father, Jimmy Lai.     In a powerful and deeply moving speech, she spoke about her father's unwavering commitment to press freedom, even in the face of immense personal sacrifice. She underscored why it remains vital to keep global attention on his case, and on the broader state of press freedom worldwide.     In her laudatory speech, Jodie Ginsberg, CEO of the Committee to Protect Journalists, paid tribute to Lai's courage and enduring legacy:    "Jimmy's fight is not a solo fight. His is a fight that we must all take on. We cannot afford to be complacent. We cannot afford to turn away. We cannot afford to be silent. Attacks on the press are the first indicators of democratic decline. The attacks on Apple Daily and its counterparts in Hong Kong presaged the far greater attacks on civil liberties in the years that followed. Jimmy Lai saw this and spoke out. We can honor him today not only by fighting for his freedom, but by defending the freedoms for which he was jailed. The test of our principles is not our willingness to defend them in theory, but to do so in practice – to be willing to stand up when those principles are under attack."    Since 2015, the DW Freedom of Speech Award has honored individuals and initiatives that demonstrate outstanding commitment to promoting free speech. #FoSA #JournalismOutLoud #GMF26

The background features a blurred event setting with soft lighting, a large eagle emblem, and a vertical red sign with partially visible white text including “dw.com/gmf,” indicating the DW Global Media Forum. A blue information display and structural elements of the venue are visible behind, creating a formal conference or award ceremony atmosphere.

All three wear formal attire, including light-colored jackets and a dark blazer. The setting appears to be an award presentation or photo opportunity at a media conference, with even lighting and a clean, professional background.

On June 23, Deutsche Welle will present the DW Freedom of Speech Award #FoSA 2026 to Hong Kong media entrepreneur and democracy advocate Jimmy Lai. His case is a stark reminder of what happens when space for independent journalism is eroded and why it must be protected. By honoring Jimmy Lai, we send a clear signal: the commitment to press freedom is ongoing and global. It brings together journalists, media organizations and social actors who believe in open debate and access to reliable information. This is what makes the DW Global Media Forum such an important platform for this kind of exchange. The award ceremony will be a key moment on the first day of the conference, and we are honored that his daughter, Claire Lai, will join us in Bonn to accept the award on her father's behalf. Registration for #GMF26 is still open. I look forward to welcoming you there next week. #JournalismOutLoud #DWAmbassador

In times of growing geopolitical tension, one question is especially close to my heart: How can we keep dialogue open across religious and cultural lines? 🌐 👉 Every day, we see how religion and identity shape societies, political discourse, and the way conflicts unfold. Too often, however, media coverage focuses on religion mainly in the context of crisis, conflict, and war. This does not reflect the full reality, and it overlooks the dedication of many religious leaders who take on responsibility in their communities to promote peaceful coexistence. That's why I believe we need to put much more light on interfaith dialogue, and on the role journalism can play in strengthening it. Responsible, independent media can create spaces for understanding, amplify diverse voices, and help build bridges where others see divisions. This is exactly what we will explore at the DW Global Media Forum 2026 in the session "Beyond coexistence: The media's role in interfaith dialogue." I am truly grateful that three outstanding personalities will share their perspectives with us: ➡️ Sally Azar, Pastor at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land ➡️ Dzevada Garic, Political Science Professor at the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology ➡️ Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis 🎤 DW Senior International Correspondent Fanny Facsar will host this important conversation 🙏 I warmly invite you to join us on June 23 and 24 at the Global Media Forum in Bonn. I very much look forward to the exchange and to meeting many of you there. More on the session ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dAMafZks
