new notes from amy on the daemon site!

May 2007

Hey Everyone!

I am working on DVD about the solo touring years, so far, with The Butchies and The Volunteers. I am working with a great editor in Atlanta and it is slowly, but surely coming together. I have done a bunch of interviews and we have oodles of footage from various camera-like people. What I need is to fill in some gaps. I thought maybe the bootleggers out there could be of some help.

I am looking for some good sound recordings or video with good sound from a few shows. I did get one bootleg for the Echo Lounge and we sure do appreciate it, but the more the merrier because different tapes have different glitches.

* 8-25-01-The Echo Lounge, Atlanta
* 4-18-05-The Paradise, Boston
* 4-21-05-The Back Cat, D.C.
* Homo A Go Go-2006

Okay, if you have anything, you can send it to us at Daemon Records, P.O. Box 1207, Decatur, Ga. 30031. I will credit you for whatever we use ad send you something fun. How's that?

In recent news, Scott Turner Schofield did a bang up job organizing the show, Riffing in the Round at The Eyedrum in Atlanta.
Wow, did I have fun.

Writer T Cooper came across the country to read from his new book-Lipshitz Six, or two Angry Blondes. This new book by T tells a story that spans generations and gender in a classic way. If you haven't read the book yet, please check it out. T also recently edited a a book out on Akashic Books- A Fictional History of the United States (with Huge Chunks Missing)

The notorious Katz did some old favs and a couple of brand new pieces. His new record - Jockstraps and Unicorns is out. Katz is growing as an artist and this cd shows his evolution as it marries beats and music to words that are go from political to familial to just plain funny with southern twist.

Turner, a provocative and compelling story teller and spoken word artist, has been proving himself all over the country. At The Eyedrum show, Turner helped us to look at gender in a new way, face our prejudices, and have fun while doing it.

Three5Human came and played some tunes and we sang together as well. Trina and Tomi can do their thing acoustically and it still rocks the same. I have always wanted to hear Trina sing "On Your Honor" and she tore it up! Okay, they have a new record out as well-
A Swig From The Acid Bottle. As you know, they are one of the kickingest rock bands ever!

Gina from Riot Grrrl Ink came down and helped us out. She did some recording of the show, so check out the web site, http://www.riotgrrrlink.com for an upcoming podcast!

oh and more news...I have started another solo record. This may take a while, but the happy part is that I am gonna be playing some tunes with Melissa York again. She's got this rocking new band called The Ex-Members and is thriving as a drummer, songwriter, and beat master. We are hooking up periodically and arranging new music with a cool producer / musician- Greg Griffith. Recording starts this summer. I am having fun!

I.G.'s are gonna do a new record in the winter.

That's the news for now. I am sure there's more and I didn't even get into politics..but I will...

over and out!
Aray

source

We’ll be trying out the digital world for this one, eMusic is gonna offer it first, starting on December 19th, and by late January, you should be able to find it on ITunes and everywhere else in the digital universe. We are doing a limited run of actual cds with a hand stamped cover by team Daemon and yours truly. The limited edition cds will be available exclusively at daemonrecords.com by December 19th and maybe sooner.

(Andrea tells me, we are taking pre-orders on this so we can get em ready fast and into the mail.)

I love the tradition of live releases. To me, it’s a document of a time and place. Songs always morph a bit when you take them on the road and every musician brings her/his own magic to the mix. That’s
what inspired this little release of Amy Ray and the Volunteers. We recorded a show in Knoxville, from top to bottom with a 4 tracks of computer magic. We would have had more tracks, but the equipment failed us at the last minute. For this reason, it’s really "live"-no fixes and barely any separation.

We skipped a few songs that are best left in the ether sphere and some babble that was probably better left unsaid. Other than that, what you hear is what we played -songs from both solo releases-Stag and Prom. It was the last show of the Rocktober 2005 tour and slimly attended. The energy was in the intimacy of the crowd and the fact that we knew we wouldn’t get to rock again for a while. After the show, we loaded the gear into the trailer and without much fanfare, celebrated at an all night Pita joint.

There’s nothing less glamorous than a college town that shuts down early. The Volunteers went on their way. The drummer Will Lochamy went back to Alabama, where he splits his time between music and managing a bar. Les Nuby, the guitar man, dropped by his home in Alabama, long enough to hang with the gang and then headed out to L.A. to do session work, playing drums. Tara Jane O’Neil went back to her life as a roving songwriter, singer, rocker, and visual artist. Our fearless tour manager Carla landed an impressive job working with the family pop/rock band, Laughing Pizza.

I am living the high life as an Indigo Girl and writing for the next Aray solo record.

In a few days, I will be covered in silver ink trying to put the rubber stamp on this project.

Enjoy!
Aray
12-04-06

P.S. This new Daemon release also contains two bonus tracks of Amy Ray and The Butchies, live from Slim’s in San Francisco.

Pre-order your copy now! Each CD cover is individually hand stamped and contains two extra bonus tracks. This is a limited edition CD and will not be available in retail stores - only here.

Starting on December 19th the CD will be available for download exclusively at Emusic. With the purchase of the CD you will also receive additional bonus tracks not available on the hardcopy. The release will be available on ITunes and other fine download site in late January.

YAH!

Trying to keep
up with Indigo Girls, MySpace, Amy-Ray.com and
Daemon has proved to slow things down a little
for Amy.
http://www.daemonrecords.com/about/amy.htm

***A Major Award***
Girlyman has been nominated for a GLAAD Media
Award in the "Outstanding Music Artists" category for
their release, "Little Star!" Guess who they are up against?
Yep, Amy Ray for "Prom". Guess Daemon did a good job
last year in our support of gay friendly media. The
awards will be televised on April 17th on the LOGO
channel as well as VH1. For more info visit:
http://www.glaad.org

***Rubyfruit Radio***
A local Atlantan, Heather Smith, has a killer
podcast called Rubyfruit Radio and she just
put together a great mix of Daemon women
artists from the very start of our little label until
now. Heather also interviewed Amy to ask her
a little of Daemon's history.
so, who's your favorite daemon band (aray doesn't count, that's usually a given!)?

mine is nineteen forty-five. i love hunter's songwriting. the hunter/katherine vocals just seem to work. and will's drumming is fantastic.

best garage/rock/punk band around.

what about y'all?

Hey! I'm looking to order some Michelle Malone from Daemon. I do intend to order "Stompin' Ground" but I'm curious to hear what other people's opinions are of this album, or just albums in general that she's composed that people consider to be strong.
Cheers!
Liz
