Crooked Still 2.0 Annoucements

These were posted on the Crooked Still Yahoo group...

Well, for one thing, Corey has a blog, and is currently blogging about the recording the band is doing. Which sounds great.
http://www.playthebassdrivethebus.blogspot.com/

For two, the band's myspace page has a photo of the new lineup:
http://www.myspace.com/crookedstill

For three, they seem to be playing in NYC on 1/13 at something called globalFEST (at least according to their booking agent's site), which is WAY soon. I envy anyone in New York who can make it to this show.

Hi Everyone!

I thought I'd mention that Globalfest is part of the APAP conference, but I also think there
is a separate ticket price for it. So... if you are attending the conference, I believe you can get in and if not you can purchase a ticket. It's a showcase event mostly for arts
presenters but we'd love to see all of you there too! We go on at 8:00 p.m. It'll be the
debut performance of the new lineup with Brittany Haas and Tristan Clarridge so if you are
in the area it'll be the first chance to hear us in this format. They've been really knocking
it out of the park this week in the studio and I am so excited about the new music and
can't wait for you all to hear it.

As for my blog, please keep checking it out. Since it's my personal blog, it'll give you a
bass player's eye view of my life on the road and at home. Since I spend much of my time
with Crooked Still it's sure to be of interest to you die hards.

Keep an eye out on the myspace and our website in the coming weeks. There's sure to be
lots of changes and updates as we transition into Crooked Still 2.0.

That's all for now. See you soon.

Corey

Rushad to leave Crooked Still!

This was in the Signature Sounds newsletter:

Crooked Still Announces New Line-Up and Recording Plans
After 6 years of creating one of the most unique and compelling forms of
alternative bluegrass music today, Crooked Still is announcing a change in
its line-up. Cellist Rushad Eggleston will perform his last show with the
band on November 18th. Crooked Still is excited to welcome two new
members: Tristan Clarridge on cello and Brittany Haas on fiddle. They have
both played in Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings, along with numerous
other projects.

From clubs, to concert halls, to festivals Crooked Still has shattered preconceptions of how traditional music is played. In their world, rock energy coexists with old-time mountain soul. Spooky backwoods melodies combine with hard-hitting beats. And raw, searing blues riffs intermingle with high heavenly vocals. It’s easy to see why The Boston Globe raved that Crooked Still is “the most important folk group to emerge from Boston since the early 60’s.” Their widely acclaimed CD, Shaken By a Low Sound (2006) received rave reviews from publications like Interview Magazine, No Depression, and USA Today proclaiming, “Aoife O’Donovan. Remember that name, because with a sultry voice that makes her sound like a bluesier Alison Krauss, she’s about to become the newest darling of the Americana set…the year’s most descriptively titled album turns public-domain tunes into bluegrass and chamber folk… Shaken is stirring.”

Don’t miss these final shows with Rushad:

Nov. 2 Joe's Pub New York, NY
Nov. 3 The Chocolate Church Bath, ME
Nov. 9 Sanders Theater Cambridge, MA
Nov. 10 The Narrows Center for the Arts Fall River, MA
Nov. 16 Stone Mountain Arts Center Brownfield, ME
Nov. 17 Lebanon Opera House Lebanon, NH
Opening for Del McCoury
Nov. 18 The Iron Horse Northampton, MA

Crooked Still will begin recording a new album in January 2008 and
continue their “ingenious flair for steering traditional music in
unexpected directions.” Look for a spring 2008 release on Signature Sounds.

* I'm really sad this is happening. Although I've grown to love every member of the band, Rushad was the inital draw for me. How can you not help but notice him? I think he is initally what draws a lot of people in...at least everyone I've introduced to the band comes out amazed by him.
* The instrument arrangement, sans fiddle is what makes the band really unique. I know that both the new players are excellent, but it won't be the same.
* On a plus, Hooray for a new record!
* I wonder what the reason is for him leaving. Maybr Aoife and him broke up and it was too hard to work together. Maybe his antics at Merlefest had something to do with it. In either case, I'm really going to miss him.
* I always figured Greg would be the first to leave the band.

I was already planning to go to the Northampton show, and now it looks like I'm going to have to at least make it to Joe's Pub too. If I'm really adventurous maybe I'll go to Fall River or Cambridge too.
Everyone should try to go to these shows. Try to see the band one last time in its original form, with Rushad! It will be worth it. Just be sure to make reservations because I'm sure these are going to sell out.

Cross posted to folkfans, falconridge and crookedstill and my journal.

Reviews from Boston

Crooked Still got two reviews from their Sommerville Show:

The Boston Globe (Free)

The Boston Herald (You can read a short summary for free, or pay for the full article)

There is also this article in the NYT. It talks about Crooked Still, The Mammals, The Duhks, Uncle Earl, and a bunch of old-time musicians. Corey also told me yesterday that the Times is going to review their show tonight at Joe's Pub.

Shaken By A Low Sound

So, the new album's been out for a while - do you guys have it yet? Thoughts?

I am loving it; I only wish it had more than 11 tracks on it. My favorite right now is "Wind and Rain." It's a beautiful song, and I love the story...more than a little effed up, if I do say so...but that's my kind of folk song, anyway.

Oh my gosh!

Big news - Greg Liszt is going to be touring with Bruce Springstein!! This is so exciting! I'm going to try to see the show in Saratoga, NY.

I've cut the whole letter that CS sent out with the details. This also includes concert dates in the midwest!

Hello out there-

Happy Spring! There has been a ton going on in the little world of Crooked Still over the past few months. While we haven't been out on the road, we have still been in constant email and iChat contact, dealing with all the crazy aspects of making a new CD, etc.

In the middle of all this craziness, Greg gets a call to go try out for Bruce Springsteen's band. So he goes to New Jersey, has a good time, and says "wow, that audition was the best day of my life." Then he actually gets hired. Yup, you heard me. The name "Greg Liszt" can now be found on the official website of the Boss. So this means that for about six or eight shows between April 24 and June 11, we will be joined by some other stellar banjo players. (Greg returns to us on July 5). On April 24 and 25, Noam Pikelny (Compass Records artist, Leftover Salmon, John Cowan Band) will help us out. Noam is a close pal of the band's, not to mention one of the foremost banjo players in the entire country. We can't wait to share the stage with him! Check out www.noampikelny.com

In other news, Darol Anger's Republic of Strings has just released a brand new album. Available on Compass Records, it's called "Generation Nation." For those of you who have not yet heard this amazing band, it features Rushad on cello, as well as Brittany Haas (she played on Hop High!) on fiddle, Scott Nygaard on guitar, and a ton of other crazy guests. Aoife makes an appearance on the new CD, singing a Rushad Eggleston classic, "In the Basement." The band is on tour all spring, (unfortunately, without Rushad and Aoife), but you should not miss them if they come to your town!
www.darolanger.com

We are ridiculously excited to hook up with Jawbone this weekend. Jawbone is the name of a trio including Tony Trischka, Bruce Molsky, and Paula Bradley. These three musicians are some of our all time favorites, and there should be a lot of great jamming onstage. We hope to see as many people as possible at these shows- it will be our first time in Chicago! And these will be Greg's last few shows with Crooked Still before heading out on tour with Bruce Springsteen until June 26. Spread the word...

UPCOMING SHOWS:

Friday, April 21
The Old Town School of Folk Music
WITH JAWBONE
Chicago, IL
7:30pm
http://www.oldtownschool.org/performances/

Saturday, April 22
Parrish Auditorium @ Miami University
WITH JAWBONE
Hamilton, OH
8:00pm
http://www.hdg.muohio.edu/shriver/BoxOffice/?showme=UpcomingEventsFall.htm

Sunday, April 23
Duncan Hall
WITH JAWBONE
Lafayette, IN
7:30pm
http://www.friends-of-bob.org/

Monday, April 24
Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour
with Noam Pikelny on banjo
Lexington, KY
6:45pm
www.woodsongs.com

Tuesday, April 25
The Station Inn
with Noam Pikelny on banjo
Nashville, TN
8pm
www.stationinn.com

that is all until we head to the Lake Eden Arts Festival in NC (www.theleaf.com) in May....

Check out http://www.brucespringsteen.net/news/index.html to see where Greg will be for the next couple of months...

Everybody take care, and enjoy the lovely weather. For those of you running the Boston Marathon today, good luck, and we'll be watching.

xo,
Crooked Still

February 12 in Charlottesville Heads Up

To all those of you in the Charlottesville, VA area, in case you didn't know about this, I wanted to give a heads up.

Crooked Still will be playing at the Prism Cafe at both 4pm and 7pm on Sunday February 12.

Girlyman will be playing at the Gravity Lounge that same day at 8pm. I know the groups have lots of common fans, so I just wanted to give the heads up about the conflicting times before anyone preorders tickets without considering the other show. The two venues are very close, both in downtown Charlottesville, so you could certainly make it to the 4pm CS show as well as the 8pm Girlyman show. Girlyman also appears to have an opener scheduled, so if you want to do both Crooked Still sets, you may not miss much of the Girlyman set, but your seats would probably not be good if you come late.

Both venues and both bands are spectacular - I encourage you to check out both if you have the means. I'll be going with a whole group of folks, if anyone needs to share rides...we're coming from all directions.

Peace.

crossposted to crookedstill, girlyfans

Crooked Still and others // Somerville Theater Nov 5

Crooked Still, Jake Armerding & Halali played an incredible show last night at the Somerville Theater. As we were told the first plans for this show had been made by Jake and other organizers 18 months back. This was a hometown show for a lot of musicians on the stage (hosted by Matt Smith of Club Passim fame) and the atmosphere was bordering on Baseball stadium like. I appeared to be very close to be sold out.
I really had high hopes for this triple bill and it turned out even better than I had expected.
They played in reverse order (as noted above). I had never heard Halali live before (as a group that is. I had heard Henneke Cassel several times though) and their performance was simply outstanding but I have to admit that I truly love Celtic music (I've been longer into Celtic than into American contemporary folk).
Jake Armerding, a treat as always, with his Dad on mandolin and (partly) Henneke on piano and Greg Liszt on banjo.

Crooked Still's set:

Darling Corey
Last Fair Deal Gone Down
Orphan Girl *loves*
Keep My Body Down(?)
Ecstasy (w/ Aoife on guitar)
Cowboy Joker

I had never seen Crooked Still in a non-festival like venue and they were beyond amazing.

A big ass jam session with all musicians followed, they played 2 songs altogether (10? musicians) and closed with Shady Grove as a sing along after a total cracktastic intro by Rushad ;)
But we didn't let them get away with this so they came back and played Graceland (Paul Simon cover) as an encore.

I'm still floored.

Future of CS

Hey, I'm not intimately or personally aware of the band's future direction, and I often wonder about this. I read an article somewhere that since Aoife is so extremely talented it took the band awhile to commit to doing this type of music together, rather than her going off and doing any of the other myraid of things she is capable of. Do you think they are planning to stick together for a while, or are they still testing things out? I'm also curious about what Greg's plans are after he gets his PhD. I would like to think he would stick to music, but for some reason I doubt anyone that goes to the trouble of getting a PhD from MIT goes into music as a profession.

I always encourage my friends to listen to "Hop High", and to go see them live. Most of the reason is because I know they will enjoy it and have a great time. Another reason is that I worry about how much longer the band will be around, and I want to see them while they still have the chance. I hope they will be together for a long time, but I'm not so sure.

Does anyone have the inside scoop here?

Uh, so... did any of you Falcon Ridgers go to the Dance tent much on... I think it was Friday? Yeeeaaah I totally contradanced with Rushad. Which made my weekend. Heeehee he made funny faces at me when we would swing. And he remembered me from when we met last year, which I thought he wouldn't and that was thrilling for me as well. :D

Crooked Still at Falcon Ridge - 7/23 - 7/24/05

Wow, Crooked Still was at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this past weekend, and they were totally awesome! I saw them perform on Friday morning at the workshop stage, and on the Main Stage on Saturday night. I also saw Rushad and Aoife perform together as the Goblin and Princess of Snee at the Family Stage.

After their workshop set on Friday, I showed all of them
the shirt I made, and asked them to sign it. They were all really excited about it, and loved it. Cory said that it was first shirt he had ever signed, and Rushard said that he "hoped to own one of those in the future." :-D I was sooooo happy.

Rushad and Aoife's set on the family stage was very fun to watch. The kids all seemed to like it, and they all grunted, yelled and sang the funny Snee words back at Rushad. I had fun participating in that as well! I think the show really showed Rushad's versatility and creativity.

Their Main Stage set on Saturday night was probably the best set I have seen them do. I've seen them perform 4 times (once at FRFF last year, and 3 times since then). This set was very high energy, and full of excitment. It was obvious that they weren't as nervous as they were last year, and they had a lot more fun with the audience. They played some great new songs, even one that they had just learned the day before. I think it was called "Ectasy," and it was a really beautiful hymn. None of the people I was camping with had seen them before, and they were all blown away by the group.

On Sunday I was sad because the group didn't have any performances, and I wanted to show them to my boyfriend, who just came for Sunday. I did see Cory play on the dance stage, and then I ran into Aoife in the merchandise tent. This may have been the highlight of the whole festival for me. I had been inquiring to see if recordings of CS's Saturday night set was on sale (They had actually recorded and produced sets, and were selling the CDs the next day, which was cool). I called out to the salesperson, "Do you have Crooked Still's set??" She said no, but then I head someone ask me, "Do you need a Crooked Still CD?"...I turned around and it was Aoife! She recognized me, and laughed..."Oh no, you must have hundreds of them!" I was so excited to see her, and I told her how much their Saturday set had rocked, and how much my friends had liked it. We then gave each other a big hug, which was awesome, and surprisingly didn't feel forced or weird. I then introduced her to my boyfriend. I then told her I was thinking about buying a "Sometimes Why" CD, but she told me that they didn't have anymore on sale here. She offered to let me follow her to her car, so that I could get one!! She then told me to just e-mail her to get one. :-) I then brought up the shirts, and asked her if they wanted it. I had just meant whether the group wanted some, but she thought I meant using the logo for selling tee shirts! She said, "I really like it, and I'm going to talk to the guys about whether we want to use it." I laughed as said, "No, I just meant, do you want me to make four for you guys." She was really excited about that, so we're going to e-mail each other and getting them some shirts!

In short, I think they blew everyone away at the Festival, and it was really fun for me to get to interact with them. :-)

I feel special

So, yesterday, for the first time ever, someone came up to me and said "I read your blog online....I recognize you from your picture." However, this wasn't just anyone, it was Corey DiMario, the double bassist from Crooked Still!!!! Haha...a semi-famous person reads this (not all the time, but I guess a couple of times)! I'm so flattered, and so happy that it is someone I think is cool - someone from Crooked Still!

The concert was great itself, and the venue was really fun. It was a huge park in this town, and it looked like possibly the whole town was there. There were lots of kids running around, and lots of older people sitting on blankets, drinking wine. The entire time it looked like it was going to rain, but it didn't! The band themselves sounded great, and the new songs they played seemed very well-rounded and fun. The new stuff ranged from bluegrass to blues, and I hope they put most of it onto an album soon! I can't wait to see them at Falcon Ridge!

I play the cello, and I'm trying to teach myself how to do some fiddling-type stuff on the cello, so Rushad's an big musical role model for me. That's all I guess

I think I am going to the show on Tuesday, July 5th in Ridgefield, CT! I'm very excited about getting to see Crooked Still again. Is anyone else going to this show, or any other shows on this tour?

I have an idea for a tee-shirt design for the band. I may make myself a shirt, wear it on Tuesday and see what kind of reaction I get from them. I think it would be fun to make them shirts for FRFF! If I make the shirt, I'll post a photo of it here.

Heya and welcome to the Crooked Still community:)
Judging by the crowd at the Prism Cafe in Charlottesville on Saturday, I'd say this group is going to quickly work their way to the top of the folk world. Okay, it was Greg's homecoming, so maybe not totally indicative of the general trend, but still. It was a great show. Lots of new songs (new to the Crooked Still repertoire, anyway) and lots of energy, as always. After the show, I talked to Rushad and Greg a bit and was delighted to hear they'll be at the next two Falcon Ridge Folk Festivals. Joy:) They were new to the fest last year, but I'm wondering, if any of you attend, where do you camp? Any chance there will be a Crooked Still camp this year? I can't leave the Pirate's Patch (EFO) - they've been too good to me - but maybe we can arrange for some neighboring sites. Anyway, enjoy the community.
Peace.
