| Dear Colleagues,
This edition of our newsletter comes to you amid several ongoing projects in our Library, and shares those and some recent accomplishments! Here are a few items, and you can read about many more below:
-
All library employees participated in the creation of a new, two-year strategic plan for the Library, aligned with the goals of Cleveland State United, building on the Library’s strong foundation and helping shape its future. This includes updated mission, vision, and values statements, along with five strategic goals and related objectives. The full set of documents will appear soon on our…
-
…New, updated, and redesigned web site! Thanks to the work of Donna Stewart and an internal advisory team, along with input from many other employees, in July we will switch over to a fully accessible and more intuitive site.
-
Library employees are preparing to roll out a new course reserves system that will integrate with Blackboard, providing a single place for students to access their course materials online.
-
Our Library building is undergoing significant work to remediate water issues on the 4th floor and is part of the larger Rhodes Tower abatement project this summer and fall. While there will be temporary inconveniences, these fixes will allow us to plan for future space use with much more certainty. If you missed, find more details about this in my recent Library Changes Coming Soon announcement.
-
We continue to provide significant support for students in terms of affordable course materials—since the start of these efforts, these advocacy efforts, CSU students have saved more than $2.9 million in textbook costs.
-
Our digital collections full of historical and scholarly content are always growing—these include our institutional repository, EngagedScholarship @ Cleveland State University, and the Cleveland Memory Project.
-
And if you’re reading this, you have the opportunity to Join the Friends of the Library now with some new membership levels and benefits. The Friends started a drive to reach 35 new members this year and need just 5 more, so consider joining us!
If you have any thoughts or questions about this or anything related to the Library, we welcome your ideas and partnership going forward. Please feel free to reach out to me any time, to your subject librarian, or contact us by any means you prefer.
Have a great summer!
Scott Vine
Director of the Michael Schwartz Library

Article by Mandi Goodsett Published
In The Library With the Lead Pipe Journal
Mandi Goodsett, Performing Arts and Humanities Librarian, recently had her article, Moving Beyond Willpower: A New Direction for Media Literacy Instruction, published. In it, she writes that academic librarians and others often engage with media literacy instruction by promoting fact-checking strategies, such as lateral reading or Mike Caulfield’s SIFT.
Evidence shows that these strategies are valuable and can be effective, but they all ultimately rely on individual students to use willpower to overcome cognitive habits, biases, strong parasocial relationships with content creators, the power of algorithms, and other challenges to fact-checking content in the moment. Mandi's article offers an alternative approach that instead encourages faculty to support students in intentionally redesigning their information environments to improve the quality of information that they encounter in the first place.
Join us in congratulating Mandi on her achievement, which highlights her expertise, dedication, and meaningful contribution she continues to make in her field!
Email Mandi with your feedback at a.goodsett@csuohio.edu.
In the Library With the Lead Pipe is an open access, open peer reviewed journal.
| | A New Library Website is on the Way | |
by Donna Stewart, Web Specialist
Coming in July: a new Michael Schwartz Library web site that makes it easier to find what you need, when you need it, on any device. The redesigned site is more than a visual refresh: it is a streamlined, more coherent platform for delivering core library services to our students, faculty, and staff. Built on a modern code base designed to conform to WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, with a carefully crafted set of in‑house page designs, it is more stable and easier to keep up to date. You should notice clearer navigation, pages that work more smoothly with assistive technologies, and a site that feels like a single coherent tool for finding research help and getting to library services and resources quickly.

Our 1st floor is fully reopen!
After what felt like endless construction and flood mitigation work, we’re delighted to share that the entire first floor west end space is now fully reopened, including our Learning Commons, computer lab, adjacent classrooms, study areas, and restrooms.
You’ll once again find comfortable places to study, collaborate, and plug in, with full access to the computers, specialized software, printing, and all the support you rely on throughout the semester. Thanks for your patience and flexibility during the disruption; we can’t wait to see you using the refreshed Learning Commons again.

Cleveland State University was proud to serve as the host for the first in-person OpenCon Ohio Preconference event on May 14th. More than 40 open education supporters from across the state convened in the CSU Law Building to learn about textbook affordability and build community. The following day, May 15th, the 9th OpenCon Ohio virtual event took place, with over 450 registrants from around the world. This event, which had its start as OpenCon Cleveland here at CSU, is now organized by a planning team with members from The Ohio State University, OhioLINK, Bowling Green State University, and Columbus State Community College, as well as, of course, faculty and staff from CSU. This year's event was engaging, informative, and well-received by participants!
Keynote speaker, Anna Mills, visionary leader in open education, presented: "The Power of Open in an AI Era: How Open Practices Help Us Adapt and How AI Can Help Open Grow”. Other recordings, including plenary sessions and lightning talks, are available on the OpenCon Ohio 2026 website.
The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) generously awarded a grant to OpenCon Ohio to support both the keynote speaker and the in-person preconference.

Generative AI: Faculty AI Literacy Certificate Course
If you're a faculty member with a little extra time this summer, you might be interested in taking the Faculty AI Literacy Certificate Course. The Office of Instructional Excellence, in partnership with the Michael Schwartz Library, has developed this short, asynchronous certificate course for faculty to help learn more about Generative AI (without pressuring them to use it!). Participants will gain skills and knowledge about generative AI that will help them make more informed decisions about classroom AI policy, as well as their use of generative AI for teaching, research, and productivity.

Full Circle Scholarship: Affordable Learning Meets Open Access Publishing
by Theresa M. Nawalaniec, Sciences and Engineering Librarian
| | |
Dr. Erin Avram
Assistant College Lecturer Department of Chemistry
| In 2025, the Michael Schwartz Library, in collaboration with the CSU Chemistry Department and the Washkewicz College of Engineering, obtained full text access to all American Chemical Society (ACS) journals. This subscription agreement also enabled CSU authors to publish open access in any ACS journal with no article processing charges (APC), providing huge savings. | | | |
After receiving one of the Library’s Textbook Affordability Grants in 2023, Dr. Erin Avram remixed open educational resources (OER) for her CHM151: Chemistry Around Us course and collected data and feedback from her students regarding their experience of using these materials instead of purchasing a textbook. Dr. Avram recently published this information as an open access article titled “The Impact of an Interactive Open Education Textbook for an Undergraduate Introductory Chemistry Course for Nonmajors” in the Journal of Chemical Education at no cost by taking advantage of no APC. This is an example of how open access came full circle to benefit both CSU students, faculty, and those outside of CSU!
Dr. Avram was selected as the
2024 Textbook Affordability Hero

Dr. Clayton Wukich named 2026 Textbook Hero Award Winner
Every year the Student Government Association works with the Michael Schwartz Library to select a winner of the Textbook Hero Award. This award goes to a faculty member who put forth significant effort to replace a traditional textbook with a low-cost or open alternative, and whose efforts had a high impact on textbook costs, classroom engagement, and student achievement. This year's winner was Dr. Clayton Wukich, Associate Professor in the College of Urban Studies. Dr. Wukich authored his own open textbook, An Ohioan’s Guide to State & Local Government, which saves his students more than $32,000 annually.
Congratulations, Dr. Wukich!

Seventeen Faculty Collaborate to Expand Affordable Learning Options
by Mandi Goodsett, Performing Arts and Humanities Librarian
Funded by the CSU Provost's Office and coordinated by members of the OER Committee and Michael Schwartz Library, the Textbook Affordability Summer Symposium (TASS) is an opportunity for faculty to learn more about textbook affordability options available at CSU, and to receive specialized support in switching to free course content. This year's event, held in person for the 2nd time, was a great success! On May 11th seventeen faculty members, plus subject librarians and TASS planners, convened to support student success, connect with one another, and pursue innovative, student-centered teaching together.

Cleveland State University's MSL Academic Endeavors, publishing imprint of the Michael Schwartz Library, has published a new Cleveland Memory book, All We Are Saying: Music's Evolving Voice of Protest, by local authors Breanna Mona and Mike Olszweski.

Along with reflection by top scholars it provides insight from some of the most renowned voices in entertainment and social activism including final interviews with CSNY's David Crosby and Kent State's Alan Canfora on the May 4th 1970 tragedy, and political reformer John Sinclair, whose plight was celebrated in song by John Lennon. Plus, dozens of other renowned names offer their take on the continuing development and transformation of protest in the arts.

Memories of Otto Moser and Cleveland's Vaudeville Heyday
Otto Moser opened his soon to-to-be-famous restaurant in the 1890s, at the height Cleveland's Vaudeville era. The photos that lined the pub's walls told the tale of Cleveland's theatrical heyday until it closed in 2018. Those photos found a new home at Cleveland State University Michael Schwartz Library Special Collections, where author Christopher Roy was volunteering. The Cleveland Heights native scanned all 650 photos to be included in the Cleveland Memory Project. He soon artfully packaged them into his ebook, titled Mr. Moser’s Neighborhood: An Intersection of Cleveland and Vaudeville, where you can discover Cleveland's forgotten theaters and the hundreds of performers who considered one downtown bar "the place to be" in the era from roughly 1885 to 1930.

Who are the Friends of the Library?
The Friends of the Michael Schwartz Library are a community of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and neighbors who believe a great university deserves a great library. Together, Friends build support and recognition for the Library’s vital role at Cleveland State and across Northeast Ohio—and they encourage gifts of materials, equipment, and funding that keep our collections and programs thriving.
What your membership supports

• Annual excursions to cultural venues
• Recognition of the Library’s dedicated staff and students
