NaNoWriMo

So, the last couple of years I have taken advantage of NaNoWriMo for the sole purposes of writing JxHQ fanfiction. Which is technically against the rules, but I think we all know how I feel about rules. :P

I’ve barely written any fanfiction this year at all - coming in even slacker than I was last year. Of course, I HAVE been BUSY with other stuff - lol - but I still feel guilty.

So! What’s the verdict? Would folks who read my fanfic enjoy reading new material? Would you be excited or pleased to get a slew of more fic in the wake of NaNoWriMo? Please leave a comment with your answer! :)

The Reunite JokerxHarley Campaign

Now that the Joker has officially "returned from the dead" and Harley has been established as a once-again recurring character in Gotham City Sirens, it is well passed due time that DC reunited the crazy couple.

It would seem that DC are at least somewhat aware of how popular the two are as a couple as evidenced in the continued release of complementary collectibles and that they are frequently seen joined in flashbacks, elseworlds and in other media (such as video games).

But fans are sick and tired of seeing them only on the periphery in this way. It's been years since they were properly together within the mainstream continuity and as characters they are far more interesting when they have each other to play off of and further them as characters.

The only way to make DC listen is if we get organised and actively campaign them and make them aware of our desires.

The best way to do that is proactively - to get off our butts and do things OLD-SCHOOL.

DC pay attention to fans' feedback if fans go the extra step to contact them personally. Forget email, forget online petitions, forget just bitching on message boards and in forums - the best way to garner DC's attention is with good, old-fashioned LETTER WRITING!

GUIDELINES FOR LETTER WRITING:

These have been proven to be the most effective way of getting DC to take notice of feedback:

1. WRITE IT ON THE BACK OF A POSTCARD
Think about DC's incoming daily mail. Insane. Don't waste your time or theirs with envelopes - a single piece of paper that can be picked up and its message read instantly is the way to go.

2. KEEP IT SHORT
Hey, if anyone loves to ramble about these two, it's me. You all know that! But DC, by and large, just doesn't care. The creative teams & editors are too busy to read long, rambling, philosophical meta essays. Many DC staff trawl the internet and read fans' websites, but they do that on their own time. SO. Don't carry on. Tell them simply: I miss Joker and Harley being together as a couple. They really add something unique to the Batman world. When will we see them back together again? Soon, I hope!

3. DON'T CRITICISE
Yeah, I'm angry, you're angry, we're all angry. Save it for the internet. Keep it upbeat, light-hearted, friendly. Keep it to the basic information. Mention how much you enjoyed past stories with the two together and how you can't wait to read some more - they're such a great couple and their stories are always so fun and entertaining.

4. SEND IT
Seriously, get up off the couch now, find a postcard and a stamp and do it. Don't talk, take action.

If we FLOOD DC with hundreds of postcards all saying the same thing - PUT JOKER & HARLEY BACK TOGTEHER - they are going to take notice.

WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN.

So - let's do so.

I just want to say that you really made me think about the relationship of harley and joker in a differnt way. I started to grow to love joker after reading the killing joke some years back but never really liked his romantic relationship with harley...but you made me see a certain charm in it.

Hi all,

As you all know, I've been quiet with fanfiction for about a year now.

There IS a reason for that. I know I keep saying it's because "I'm busy", but the truth is... I always find time for the things I love, no matter how busy I am. So... how was I going to find the love in fanfiction again?

I had to do some soul searching and the answer shocked me. It took me a long time to come to terms with this but I finally have and so I present to you my latest fic - a heralding of a radical new direction for my work.

Thanks also to itllcometome for doing a 'reassuring read' and not feeling the same imperative on the problems I see with the fic.

In all honesty, this fic about killed me.

I started writing it sometime in 2008, had it all plotted out in my head and then just never got around to finishing it off, given that 2009 was The Year of Not Writing Fic for me. I wanted this fic to be all about the psychology and the visceral phsyical experience combined. I had a very clear idea for what I wanted to achieve with it.

But it seems I left it so long that by the time I sat down to finish it in November 2009... that it had all become a clinical duty of checking off each little box of each little element that I wanted to put in this fic.

Don't get me wrong - there are bits of it I really love and feel (hope) are quite powerful and strong.

But there are lots of other bits that feel stilted and strained to me.

I sat on it this long because I felt so frustrated with it. I struggled with trying to cut whole chunks of it out but kept concluding that would alter what I ultimately wanted to communicate with this fic.

And to be frank, I don't have the time to do massive rewrites. One of my bigges flaws as a fanfic writer is once it's finished, I'm disinclined to return to it, as much as I know a fic may need it. I just like to set it free and let it stay as it is, even if that's thoroughly imperfect.

But I'm tired of not putting fic out there and I feel like this is a necessary sequel to First Time in terms of the psychological development of Joker and Harley's relationship.

SO DAMNIT, HERE IT IS! Flawed, long, self-indulgent, frustrating as it is, I present it to you. Far from my best work but yes there are bits I think are good and strong and I hope, hope, HOPE you will give it a chance and hope even more you enjoy at least some of it, if not all of it.

FanFiction & Stuff

Despite the incredible embarrassment stirred when realising this journal has become a place where I make entries promising fanfiction 'eventually', I'm here to make another post on the very same thing again!

Last night I experienced a twinge of yearning for producing fanfic. I haven't felt a desire quite like that for a while. I mean, I've never stopped wanting to write fanfic on these two, but it sunk down way low on the priorities list due to everything else and last night it struggled to rise.

That said, I'm still super busy and still wrestling with the problem of, when wanting to write fanfic, having a bit of a blank-stare and drool time: "well, what do I write ABOUT?"

But, I at least have one fic in progress, another fic with a co-author and it's my turn to write a chapter, and the epic porn which has been returned to me, beta'd. Hooraye! :D

I may also have been somewhat inspired by the Gotham City Sirens #7 issue, which is weird cos I'm not exactly besotted with that series.

Now Harley has an actual family and this means that my personal established canon - which was safe because nothing about her family had been known - is now completely wrong. Where possible - and with the exception of the Kesel/Leiberman run which was just an endless stumbling obstacle course of wrongness - I like to conform strictly to canon in regards backstories and such for my fanfic. So, this is bugging me - on the other hand, at least Harley has an official family backstory now I can mostly get behind and certainly one that has potential for development and complexity.

And I think the depiction of her father has made me even more hungry to see her and Mistah J back together to explore those Daddy issues way more.

And some other stuff I won't post here since I've been plagiarised a few times recently. Boy, is that getting boring.

Last night I also had a moment - not really over - of becoming convinced all my fanfic is all hogwash and utter tripe and I have shamed the names Joker and Harley Quinn by even writing. :P

Of course... that's not going to stop me.

NaNoWriMo - conceding defeat

Yes, what I promised would not happen has indeed come to pass.

I haven't written a word since my last update!

I knew part way through the week but just delayed saying so. The thing I realised was to complete the 50k, I would have to put a halt on other things I was doing.

And I just didn't want to.

I hate not finishing things. I hate admitting defeat. I hate failing.

But I find myself reasonably ok with this. It irks me, but I'm not devastated. I got the epic porn finished and continued another story. And I intend to continue writing fanfic.

My lifestyle is such now that I don't have a lot of time for this, but I'm going to keep plugging away whenever I can. Especially as fanfiction seems to be the only way these days to get a little of our favourite duo actually together.

And on we go!

I'm just over 30k behind, which means I need to write 4k a day to be finished come Monday.

NaNoWriMo Update

For anyone out there who may actually be wondering - yes I am still plugging away at nano!

Unlike in other years, however, where I have been far ahead by this point - I am currently about 10k behind!!!

I am just taking it day by day though. I don't currently have anything to share with you as I have been working on a single epic porn piece and that is best posted in its entirety. It's one I've meant to write for almost as long as I've been writing fanfiction... seriously... and finally I'm doing it. I just hope it turns out ok. I haven't fully de-rusted.

Yes, it's started and the good news is I've written one-and-a-half more chapters of a fic I'd started a few months ago.

The bad news is, I'm more than 3000 words behind where I should be at with the daily word count. So far.

And so I come to facing a simple fact: if I want to be caught up to the proper wordcount by Sunday, I need to write porn.

You see, I'm a quick writer however you look at it. The only reason I haven't done more nano to date is I've barely been at home.

But the problem with regular stories is that they require PLOT. Especially if you try and be a bit clever, like me (not saying I succeed, but there's effort in there!). So when I do have time to write, I'm still nutting out details. That takes time itself.

But porn? Well, folks are having sex. PWP, to put not too fine a point on it. And even though I have a specific purpose or psychological intent in mind with pretty much all my porn, it still flows off "the pen" a lot easier.

By the end of the week, I'd like to have a couple of chaps of this fic written, and a whole big mess of porn.

Hello!

I just found your work and read the entire story in one sitting! I have a confession to make... I never particularly liked Harley Quinn from the few episodes of the animated series I caught (I've never read any comics were she
has been featured). I suppose I simply thought her character to be silly.

However, I've always loved the Joker for the deviously intelligent, Loki-like, psychotic scoundrel that he is. ;)

After seeing DK last year, in which Heath Ledger was so incredible, I started reading fan fiction. Some writers totally understand and write Joker's character so well the stories were a pleasure to read. Some... not so much.

Searching high and low for good Joker fic, I ran into many, many stories featuring romance and OCs. Now, being the romantic soul I am, albeit in a dark, twisted way, I read my share. Only a very tiny, select few managed to portray Joker in the proper light. In most stories he was sadly OOC to the point I nearly needed a barf bag.

I couldn't stand it anymore! I decided to give Joker/Harley stories a chance. After all, she's canon so the stories have to be better, right?

Uh-uh.

How disappointing. I assure you my let down made me quite bitter for some months.

THANK YOU FOR WRITING A FABULOUS JOKER/HARLEY FIC!

I have to tell you that after reading Tainted Love, I can understand the relationship between Harley and the Joker much more clearly. In fact, you've converted me completely to a Joker/Harley shipper! Never, ever, did I think those words would come out of me.

The quality of your writing is both high and smooth. You keep the characters believable and well fleshed out. I cannot honestly point out anywhere in the story a spot that either went OOC. Personally, I love the subtle sexual innuendo and hints between the two. I agree with your theory that the Joker is strangely pansexual and I personally doubt he would take as much pleasure in *ahem* banging a woman (or man) as twisting and playing with them mind, body, and soul in order to meet his needs. Don't get me wrong, I think he is as masculine as any male and if his interest were peaked, he'd enjoy the sex act fully, but I don't see him being ruled by his balls.

The way you portray Harley made me feel so sorry for her that I cringed as the Joker completely overshadowed and eventually overwhelms her sanity. She came across as a nice, sweet, caring young lady with an ambitious streak which leaves her wide open for the mental ass whooping the Joker is going to give her.

Wow, you really are very talented and I salute you.

I fully intend to read your other works and leave you more reviews.

I myself am so inspired by you and this story that I intend to write DK Harley/Joker story! It may take me months, but if it turns out a quarter as good as this story, I'll consider myself blessed.

Aside? I HATE that I haven't had any time to write new fanfic. Hate, hate, hate.

I really still have so many ideas and still want to write them, but I'm so busy trying to do everythingthat I'm micro-managing my fandom geek time and it seems like fanfic takes so much effort and commitment to do well that it always has to wait for "more time"...

I feel like a miserable failure for it, like I'm letting my beloved, beloved OTP down...

I have to keep reminding myself there is no deadline on my fanfic projects. I could keep writing them for years if I wanted to.

But again... so many ideas... such a desire to share... sigh.

I'm sorry. I'll try and get a new chapter of my latest fic out soon. :/

I have been blessed enough to receive some truly amazing feedback in the year and a half I've been writing fanfiction.

Some of it has touched me to tears, overwhelmed and humbled me and made me glow.
