Happy Hallowe'en, Everyone!

If you look through the collections of very old vintage Hallowe'en cards that collectors post on the internet, you see tidbits of the origins of Hallowe'en and the traditional customs associated with it handed down through the years. All of that was before the modern Americanized version of Hallowe'en, which has become about violence fantasies and serial killers, blood- and entrail-covered costumes, and amassing as much candy as possible. In the old cards, you see the divination and party games adults used to play, plus hints of the folklore about jack o' lanterns, devils, goblins, owls, witches, etc. Here's an example:

The Eve of All Hallows Eve

Hello LJers! Long time, no post. So sorry. I find it very hard to keep up with the multiple forms of social media that we have floating through our lives non-stop in these modern times.

I'm working on Halloween night, so I don't have to buy all that candy to hand out. Kellen is working Halloween day. Today I finally put out a few decorations in the house and have done some cleaning and decluttering in an attempt not to bring into the new year the crap from the old.

Fauntling will be turning 18 soon, and all I can think about are the lovely autumn fun days with a wee!Fauntling that are long gone. I wish my mother could see what a wonderful young man he has grown into. His senior year classes are pretty rigorous and kicking his butt, but he's hanging in there. He had to go off his ADHD stimulant medication due to negative side effects, so focusing and processing lecture time is extra difficult this year. He likes work and the people there, and they seem to like him.

Work is very physical all the time. I'm utterly exhausted when I get home and can't do a thing. I almost never cook. Good news is how much stronger I am from moving boxes, furniture, and running all over the place. I've lost nearly two sizes since July despite eating like a fiend, and my blood test numbers are fantastic. Unfortunately, they've just hired some seasonal help and cut back on my hours because my weekly average hours had crept up to full-time. They aren't allowed to have but a certain small number of full-timers so they won't have to pay leave or other benefits. I still don't have a regular schedule, and I only get my schedule a few days beforehand. However, the physicality of it keeps anxiety at bay, so that's good.

My dad will start dialysis in November. He was hospitalized for cellulitis in one leg recently after scraping his knee in a fall. He's going downhill pretty fast with multiple problems, but he tries to stay as positive as possible. I bought him a digital magnifying reader that can magnify up to 32X, so he can now read the sports page of the paper and the TV Guide for the first time in years. Made him very happy.

We have a neighborhood skunk terrorizing us. When I come home from work at night, it will suddenly pop out of the flowerbed right next to my front door, lifting its tale and pointing its butt at me. Been very lucky not to have been sprayed yet. It got the neighbors and their dogs one night when they were sitting outside enjoying a glass of wine. The smell got into my house, too. Ick.

Thank you everyone for the lovely birthday wishes!! Much appreciated!

I'm still working at the home furnishings store. The set-up was finished and the grand opening was Aug. 2. Chaos was the rule, but my fellow "associates" are so nice and helpful. Management is completely discombobulated, perhaps because it's true that everyone rises to the level of their incompetence. I'm hopeful that they'll do much better once they can establish some routines. Communicating to employees when they change our schedules would be a good routine, for example, so we know when we are actually supposed to show up. Perhaps they believe in communication via ESP only. Regardless, I am grateful to have a job. Very.

Fauntling is working there, too, and loves it. He's made friends and likes his weekly paycheck. He finished an online course he was taking for the summer and is doing pretty well overall and driving himself all over the place. Mastering driving really boosted his confidence, and I'm so glad we insisted he get his license.

Unfortunately, I had a car accident on my birthday. Major bummer. Car is drivable but the driver's side door won't close all the way. Urrgh. The day ended well as I went to my dad and stepmother's house in the evening and had Japanese hibachi/teppanyaki for dinner and a pina colada. Yum!

Worked 8 hours today, but tomorrow I'm going with a local friend to a small, historic Virginia town that has a thriving artist community (and an awesome bead store) for lunch and strolling.
