Might be he was dead. There was no way to tell from the grandstands. It happened too far away and everyone up there was too tired or too drunk to squint away the glare from that thin indifferent sun. Even on television, the Numinous Absolute, where everything is known and everything is seen and everything spoken and shown and everything is by God under control, they didn't know. They didn't know what to say or how to say it, so they just kept talking.

The whole thing happened too fast, too slow, and after that day you'd watch the replays again and again, for months, not believing. Even in real time it still played out lazy and deliberate, the car yawing slow left, then correcting, swerving slow motion right, up the banking, tires feathering smoke, into the wall, then the impact, a sharp sound inside a dull one, and you thought - maube- it wasn't bad, he wasn't going very fast, he didn't hit very hard. Mabye you thought, okay, it happens every year, every weekend, over and over, they crash but they all just walk away. Don't they all? To this day, years gone and the whole world spun another billion miles through the void, you don't believe it. But when the car finally slid to rest the netting never camedown and the first man up to the window seemed frantic, waving like mad for the others to get there, C'mon! Sweet Christ! C'mon! and for a long time after that every gesture was panicked, emphatic, and then they pulled him out of the car and all at once the adrenaline was gone and it didn't seem urgent anymore, and even if you couldn't see it you could feel it somehow, that absence, that stillness, and the twilight quitet descended across the ridiculous immensity of that place, and it was like something being pulled out of you too, and the celebration in Victory Lance was small and fretful and wrong in the foreground, and way out there below the loneliest reach of the far turn, so steep you can barely walk it, that black car sat empty and if you were still in your seat that's when you knew. You just knew.

The rest of it - the ambulance, the lights and the sirens and the hurry, the hospital - was wishful ceremony. A prayer.

By the time they got back to their hotels or made it to the airport, most of the others knew too, the scores of thousands who'd headed for the gates to beat the traffic. They heard it on the radio or their cell phones or saw it up on the screen behind the concourse bar. In every airport from Miami back to Jacksonville and out to Orlando men and women stood crying, and in hotel rooms an motel rooms and in the endless stream of cars moving up or down the great vein ofthe I-95 people sat abject and sobbing, and the news flew out from Daytona in fast concentric circles, across the county, swift rings of grief, until everything in America sat within the blast radius of that elaborate sadness, because Dale Earnhardt was dead. Well today was certainly an interesting day. There's a lot of accusations and blame being put on differnet people about "The Big One", but really, I don't think you can blame just one person. It was a colaberation of events that caused it.

Being at Talladega you pretty much ave to expect it. At least this time everyone walked away unhurt and ready to race again luckily. Heck, even Elliott Sadler kept all 4 wheels on the ground!

Next week they head to Darlington for the first time under the lights there. If Darlington was that interesting in the day, then I can't even imagine how good it's gonna get under the lights :)

How did you get interested in Nascar?: My dad got me into, but mainly at first it was just for the accidents. He'd yell for me to come and see the wreck. As I got older, I started watching a race here and there and then all the sudden it's like BOOM...I can't miss a race and I'm screaming at the TV when Junior isn't winning or jumping up and down like a madwoman when he is!!!
New points system or Old points system?: I'm not familiar with the old system, so I'd have to say new...although it does seem a little screwy.

How did you get interested in Nascar?: My dad was watching it and then all of a sudden I got interested. It has been part of my Sundays and sometimes Saturdays for the past 8 or 9 years
New points system or Old points system?: Definitely the old system. It gives the people, such as Kasey Kahne, a chance to get into the top 10 in points. Plus I think with the new system the people in the top 10 in points have targets on them, like they are going to be purposely spun out.

Favorite Driver: Kasey Kahne. He's been working so hard and I think he deserves all the praise he gets. Talent right there.
Least Favorite Driver: Tony Stewart. He's a nice guy, but he plays rough (from what I've seen, and I know I haven't seen much).
How did you get interested in Nascar?: Well, first it all started with me starting to listen to country music (which was my big sister's doing), then last year I was flipping through the channels on the TV in the dorm and I stopped on NASCAR. Have been watching it ever since =) I know I'm technically a "new kid" to NASCAR, but I love it, and that's all that matters.
New points system or Old points system?: Honestly, the whole points system is still a bit confusing to me. Is it for every lap whatever place you were in you get so and so points? Shoot, I don't know. If anybody would like to clarify this for me, I would be eternally greatful =)

Anywho, I'm glad that I found this community! Hope to get to know you all more in time.

My take on the race:
I thought this was possibly one of the most entertaining races of the year. Yes, it was dominated by a few certain drivers, but it wasn't dominated for a long time if you know what I mean? Like Martin would get a really big lead then next thing you know Kahne's on his bumper. I found it very exciting throughout the race.
I agree with Brendan Gaughan -- J.J. Yeley's an idiot. Did someone not tell the kid that when you're rolling down a race track, you don't turn your car back up? I understand he could be trying to avoid cars below him, but when other cars behind see you rolling down, they're going to go to the top to avoid you. Rookie mistake I guess, but by the sounds of it, Brendan had a great car.
How many times is Kasey Kahne going to finish second? FIVE times now. I guess 2nd is better then last, but he's gotta win sometime.
The Garbage. People are going to complain about it, but in all honesty, what are you going to do with it? Pack 100,000 people in one area for a weekend and you're going to get garbage. Add in that it was a windy day and it's going to be all over. You can't prevent it. I think Nascar did the right thing by stopping the race to clean it up tho. I would rather sit through a few caution laps then see one of my drivers have to pit under green, or lose an engine because of it.
