Founded in 1991 by embroidery teacher Aspasia Bikaki and her student Irini Koumandraki, the Folklore Museum of Chania, also known as the Cretan House, was born out of a deep appreciation for Crete’s cultural heritage.
This unique museum offers visitors an authentic look into the island’s traditional way of life, preserving customs and crafts that defined everyday existence for generations. It is situated on Chalidon Street, right in the heart of Chania’s Old Town, while its entrance can be found within the courtyard of the Catholic Church.

The Collection
Travel back in time to witness the lifestyle of Crete’s inhabitants up to the mid-20th century. The Folklore Museum of Chania houses a collection of artifacts that reflect both domestic and occupational aspects of Cretan life.
Visitors can admire agricultural and pastoral tools, everyday household objects, and intricate weaving instruments. A highlight of the museum is its realistic representations of traditional rural home interiors and the human models, offering insight into how families lived and worked in a bygone era.

How To Get To The Folklore Museum
The museum is located at 46 Chalidon Street. Its entrance is situated in the courtyard of the Catholic Church of Chania, making it a serene spot tucked away from the bustling main street. So, you can get there:
- On Foot: If you’re exploring Chania’s Old Town, the museum is easily accessible. From the Venetian Harbor, walk up Chalidon Street; the museum will be on your right, just past the Catholic Church.
- By Bus: Local buses can take you to the central bus station (KTEL) in Chania. From there, it’s a short walk to the Old Town. Head towards the Venetian Harbor, turn onto Chalidon Street, and you’ll find the museum near the Catholic Church.
- By Taxi: Taxis are readily available throughout Chania. Simply ask the driver to take you to 46 Chalidon Street, and you’ll be dropped off right in front of the museum
