Not Your Mother's Beach Babe #NYMBeachBabe

I received the Not Your Mother's Beach Babe texturizing shampoo and conditioner
for free from Influenster for testing and reviewing purposes.

I have naturally curly hair, so I don't really need a texturizing shampoo.
But my hair is very thin/fine.
So what I love about these products is that it makes my hair feel lighter and fluffier!
And it smells so good. It smells like the beach!

I actually really like this product. And not because it was given to me!
Plus it's sulfate-free, so that's another good thing.
I'm definitely going to purchase the shampoo and conditioner.
And I want to try the sea salt spray and hair cream.
I found that Walgreen's carries these items, In-store and online.
So, I know where I can get them.

Though I wonder how this would work for someone with straight hair.
Gonna have to give some to my friend for her to try out.

I'm so happy!!

I cannot adequately put into words how happy I was today.
Watching Germany destroy Brazil 7-1. And in Brazil!!
Sweet revenge for 2002.

And to top it all off, Klose gets that scoring title all to himself.
Bliss!!!!
Klose has been my favorite footballer since I first discovered him in 2002.
And each tournament, I've wanted that World Cup title for:
my birth country, my team, my boys, my Miro.

And 4 years ago, when Klose got so close to tying Brazilian Ronaldo for the scoring title...
I just knew in my heart, he was gonna be too old to get named to the NT this year.
But he was still fit and producing at the Euros 2 year ago and I began to have hope.
And when he was named to the squad this year, I knew there was a chance.
Sure, he wouldn't be a started anymore. He is 36 years old, after all.
But when he came on against Ghana and tied with Ronaldo. I freaked out.
I just knew he was gonna get it. He just had to!!

So when he started today, I got super nervous and super excited!
My friend Sonja even texted me:
What if he breaks the Brazilian record. In Brazil. Against Brazil.
He did just that!! How perfect was that?!
I screamed so loud and for so long!
If my neighbors could hear me, I bet they may have thought I was being murdered!
I was literally shaking and sweating for several minutes after that.
It didn't help that Toni Kroos (one of my fave younger guys) went & scored 2 goals within 2 mins of each other!
And then have my boy Schürrle score 2 goals once he came in for Klose.
Perfect!!

It's probably a good thing I can no longer do daily tweet dumps.
I spammed the hell outta twitter today!!
I was watching the match "with" a bunch of Germany supporters.
And there was so much to celebrate and re-tweet.

So nervous for Sunday, but so looking forward to it!!

What I just finished reading
The Strain by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan
The Fall also by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan
The first 2 books of The Strain Trilogy.
I really, really liked The Strain and I've been meaning to read it for some time now.
But of course, I had to be sure to read the 1st book before the FX series starts in July.

Yes, it's another book series about vampires.
But you don't want to be anywhere near these vampires.
They aren't tragic or sexy or anything like Anne Rice, True Blood, Twatlight, etc vamps.
This vampirism is like a virus and spreads as such.
The 1st book felt like I was reading the vampire version of the movies Outbreak or Contagion.

What I'm reading now
The Night Eternal by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan
The last book in The Strain Trilogy, which I just started reading the other day.

I'm also reading Skin Game by Jim Butcher.
It's the latest book of the Dresden Files series.
One of my favorite book series, along with The Dark Tower and Harry Potter.
I actually bought this book.
Even though I can really get into it, I didn't finish it as quickly as I thought I would.
Mostly because the Strain books were digital loans and I wanted to finish them before I had to return them.
Plus, the World Cup has been occupying a lot of my free time!

What I'm reading next
I'm not sure what I'm going to read next.
Maybe the newest (last?) of the Mortal Instruments series.
Maybe the 3rd book of the Hitchhiker's Guide series.
I guess I'll decide once I'm done with my 2 books.
Depends on my mood.

What I just finished reading
NOS4A2 by Joe Hill
I really enjoyed this, even though it reminded me so much of his dad's work. (Stephen King)
He has a similar writing style (IMO) and the story just seemed like something King would write.
(Which is probably why I enjoyed it.)
I was gonna put a little blurb about the story, but I can't seem to think of how to describe it.

What I'm reading now
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
I decided to go ahead read my other Joe Hill book and so far, I really like it.
It's about an aging rocker that buys a ghost and the havoc it wreaks.

What I'm reading next
I really have no idea what I want to read next.
Maybe I will pick something that's been on my to-read list for a very long time.
I'll make the decision once I finish my current book.

What I just finished reading
The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
Oh man...this book destroyed me. But I loved it!
It had me sobbing in the bathub. (I like to read in the bathtub.)
After certain events transpired, I just could not stop crying.
Even after I finished the book and wrote a little review on Goodreads, I was still crying!
I haven't connected with fictional characters so much in such a long time.
I cry easily when watching tv/movies, but to cry once the book is done is something special.
I passed the book on to my niece and she loved it, too.

What I'm reading now
I'm still reading My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales by Kate Bernheimer
...very slowly!
I would probably be further along, if I had it as an e-book.
Just because I don't feel like carrying the book to work.
It's the kind of book that's difficult to read while trying to eat with a knife & fork.
Oh well. I'll finish it eventually.

I'm also reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
When I started reading this, I couldn't remember what it was supposed to be about.
I just remembered that it was something that I wanted to read.
Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors and this is newest novel. (I think)
But once I got into a rhythm, I really started to get into the story.
I found the ending a little sad, but I really liked this book.

What I'm reading next
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.
I've wanted to read this since I read the review in Entertainment Weekly.
I'm getting a digital loan from my library, so I can finally read it.
It's definitely an interesting concept.

What I just finished reading
Allegiant by Veronica Roth
The last book of the Divergent trilogy. I found it mildly disappointing.
I didn't like the explanation that Roth gave for how society was.
I found it, for lack of a better word...hokey.
I enjoyed Insurgent a whole lot more.

What I'm reading now
My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales by Kate Bernheimer
I love fairy tales and these are new stories based on old characters, themes and tales.
I've only read about 4-5 of the stories so far. I liked a couple of them.
A couple of them were so-so.
One of them, I really didn't like. I found it lacking.
I just hope things pick up soon.

What I'm reading next
The Fault In Our Stars by John Green
I've been wanting to read this for quite some time now.
In fact, I've already started reading it. I read the first chapter just because I didn't have my book with me.
I kinda want to put the other book down and keep reading this!

I didn't put up a 2014 Reading Challenge entry last month.
Last year my goal was to read 45 books, but I didn't meet it.
I only managed to read 33 books.
I was happy with that, because I didn't think I would get that far.
I managed to read 6 books within 7 days while in Germany.
I did a lot of reading while I was there.

Anyway, this year I decided to challenge myself to read 35 books.
I figured reading 33 books last year was a challenge.
So, 35 books should be a challenge this year.
So far, I have completed 4 books.

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of Dr. Jones crossing the Rainbow Bridge.
I still miss him, but I'm no longer sad.
As I started writing this I was thinking of how I wish he were here sitting next to me, right against my leg.
Of course, I start having these thoughts and I get a little teary-eyed.

What I just finished reading
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Here's a blurb from Goodreads: Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa.
She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells -
taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine.
The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today,
though she has been dead for more than sixty years.

I found this book very fascinating. Not only leearning the science of it all but about Henrietta herself.
And how the HeLa cells have impacted her family.
It's kinda sad what has happened to her children after her death.
And even though it's non-fiction and I'm not a science person, this book really had its hooks in me!
I highly recommend this book.

What I'm reading now
City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare
I figured I'd go back and finish the books that are available for this series.
Now that I've had nice long break from the Clary/Jace drama.
Of course, only a few pages in and Clary is annoying me already.
But I will soldier on and finish it!

What I'm reading next
Since the next Mortal Instruments book is not due until next year
and I'm really in the mood for a thriller/horror type book,
I think I'm gonna read Brimstone by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child
I enjoyed the 1st four Pendergast novels and this is the next in the series.

I'm have only finished 16 books so far this year.
My goal is 45 and I'm only at 36%.
Goodreads tells me I'm 11% behind schedule.
So yeah, I really need to pick up the pace.

What I just finished reading
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
This was added to my GoodReads "to-read" list 5 years ago. I finally started working on some of my earliest adds.
I wanted to get whatever I could as a digital download from the library.
It was an interesting book. I think I was drawn to it because it's set in Victorian England.
I wasn't blown away or really wowed by it, but I enjoyed it.

What I'm reading now
Rebel Angels by Libba Bray
A Great and Terrible Beauty was the beginning of a trilogy.
So, I'm reading the 2nd book now. Not sure what else to say about it.
Other than I'm trying to guess at who has ulterior motives.

What I'm reading next
The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray
I'll probably read this next, so I can finish off the trilogy. After, that I don't know.

I started it in November 2011! I liked it, but I kept getting distracted by other books.

What I'm reading now
The Blood Gospel by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell
I'm a big fan of Rollins' work. This is a new series for him and I love the mix of history/science/adventure.

What I'm reading next
I'm still working on Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.
I started this book in March 2010, but it wasn't really capturing my attention.
I hate not finishing books but reading this book almost feels like a chore.
So I'm taking it a chapter at a time.
I haven't decided what else I'm going to read once I finish The Blood Gospel

Wow! I've been a member here on LiveJournal for 10 years.
I've made some friends and lost some friends.
Gained/discovered new family members and bid farewell to others.
Moved several times. Traveled to a few new countries.
I had some really wonderful and fantastic experiences and made some spectacularly terrible decisions, too.

I miss the days of checking LJ multiple times a day and getting involved in various communities.
Meeting new people over shared fandoms and common interests.
So many people have jumped ship and with the constant issues that LJ has been having, I'm not surprised.
But I bought a permanent account several years ago, so I'll always be here in some form.
(Actually I looked it up, I bought the permanent account in June 2007)

My baby is all grown up

Today my sweet baby, Jasmine graduated from high school.
I am so proud of her.
She was born 18 years ago, just a few months before my graduation.
I was absolutely crazy about her and I'm not a baby person.
Everyone was so surprised that I always wanted to hold her and spend time with her.
She once told me: "You're not my aunt, you're my best friend."
She was about 3 years old at the time and I still tease her about it.
But she was as attached to me as I was to her.

I spoiled her and I still do.
And everywhere I went, people thought she was my daughter.
People still do. They think we look a lot alike, which is funny.
Funny because we are not biologically related. She is the daughter of my step-sister.
But you would never know it from the way we are with each other.
She and her sister, Jade (who also have a special relationship with)
like to call me Mom when we're out in public!
They think it's funny that people think they are my daughters.
I keep telling them that I'm going to wear a shirt that says:
"These are not my children" when I am with them!

It's funny, she didn't even ask me for anything big for her graduation.
She just wants me to help her paint her room.
She is not going to college, but to trade school.
While I would like for her to at least get an Associate's Degree,
I respect that she at least knows her mind enough to know what she wants to do.
She wants to be a make-up artist, which you don't need a Bachelor's Degree for.
So, she's going to live at home while going to trade school.
She wants to redo her room & make it a little more grownup.
Of course, I'm happy to help her do that.

Part of me is kinda glad that she isn't going away to school.

Farewell

Today Nicklas Lidstrom announced that he was retiring from professional hockey.
He played 20 seasons with my favorite team, the Detroit Red Wings.
I couldn't get the stream to work, but I "followed" the press conference on twitter.
Between twitter and comments on the Red Wings page on Facebook, I could not stop crying.
I know I'm a big softie and cry easily, but I've never cried over anything like this before.
I didn't even cry when my favorite player (Chelios) retired.
But I think I would have, had I watched the presser.

I got that twinge yesterday when they announced the press conference.
All of my Red Wings twitter friends started freaking out.
Because we all kinda knew what was coming.
But when Lidstrom's decision was first announced I maintained my composure.
It wasn't until everyone started describing how Lidstrom was holding back tears that I lost it.
And I kept bursting into tears for a while after that.
Eventually, I had to step away from the internet, so I could get my emotions under control.

If you have read my journal for a while, you know how emotionally invested I get in my sports teams.
Sporting events truly have the power to improve or ruin my mood for the entire day.
And Lidstrom is one of those players that people who still respect, even if they hate Detroit.
It truly is a loss for hockey for him to leave, not just for us Detroit Fans.
Now that Lids has retired, Holmstrom will probably retire, too.
And there goes everyone from the 97 Stanley Cup Championship team.
The end of an era.

Times like this is when I hate change.

RIP Davy Jones
I had such a crush on him when I was a kid.
They used to show re-runs on Channel 20 (which later because WB or UPN)
This was back when all they showed was re-runs of old shows or old movies.

I had no idea that the show was from the 60s.
I was too naive at the time to figure it out, based on the fashions!

I had a massive crush on Davy. I just knew that he would marry me one day!
Little did I know that he was older than my dad!

But it wasn't just that I thought Davy was cute.
I liked the music too.

Hearing of his passing today just means I lost just another small piece of my childhood.

Writer's Block: Scary movie

The Exorcist, by far.
As a 4 or 5 year old, I went into my Grandma's room and my uncle happened to be watching it.
I made the mistake of walking in on the scene when Regan's head turns 180 degrees.
That scared me so bad, I was afraid to go into that room for a long time.

Even when I was the film as a teenager it scared me more than any other film.
And then I went to see the re-release with the extra footage that was released back in the late 90s (I think)
And the scene with the spider walk down the stairs actually made me nauseous.

Once or twice I walked down the so-called Exorcist steps in Georgetown.
The set of very steep steps that the priest falls down in the film.
They were a little creepy to walk down, mostly because of their association with the film.

My 2nd film would be The Ring.
I watched it during the day, but I was alone and it freaked me out.

I joined Pinterest. Uh oh!
I was slightly curious about it before.
But I love the idea of finding & sharing images.
And being able to group them in bunches.

I started one new pin - mermaids.
I love mermaid images.
That was one of the first things I did when I got online back in 1995 - look for mermaid pics.
So, I love this.
I have to see if I can upload any of the images I might have somewhere.

Also, great for interior design stuff.
And fashion - even though I'm not sartorially inclined.
(I'm the perfect person for one of those fashion makeover shows)
Travel/outdoorsy photos.
Really all of it.

Bite Me by Christopher Moore
This is the 3rd book in Moore's vampire love story series.
I really enjoyed this one. More than I enjoyed the 2nd book.
At first I didn't think I was going to like it, because it was initially told through a certain character's POV.
And having a whole book from her POV would've driven me nuts.
While I love his snarky, smart-ass characters, too much Abby is too much!
And though I was really slow on the uptake, I liked how linked to characters in another of his books.

I was going to read a Stephanie Plum novel next (#9) - I have it from the library.
But, I needed a break from the smart-ass-ness!
