    ✏️ My AO3 - cac0daemonia

    🧡 Open Skies series

♻️ I give blanket permission to create works inspired by my writing and art, including but not limited to fics, visual art, podfics, bookbinding, and translations. I just ask that you let me know about it and link back to my original work. If it’s on AO3, please list it as a related work. Similarly, feel free to use my art for small avatars/icons/etc., but please credit me. If you wish to use my art in larger images like banners or headers, please ask. I do not give permission to repost or copy my work to other sites, or to share it anywhere, including Discord, without crediting me and linking back to my Tumblr or AO3.

🏷️ I’m absolutely terrible about checking my notes, so I apologize if I miss a reblog in which you replied to me. I generally only see something like that if I’m tagged. 😅

🌶️ I reblog nsfw stuff sometimes, so keep that in mind if you follow me. You’re responsible for your own internet experience.

I think I have found two fics written by AI. One a few months ago and now another.

I'm not 100% they are written by AI, honestly. But the last one that I just found it's just weird how the dialogue is written and the character awareness of what's happening when they shouldn't know. I could be wrong but the prose felt so weird and wrong...

The thing is, I don't want to call them out if I'm wrong. There's not an obvious tell that it's AI. The story doesn't have many readers so there are no many who are reading and analyzing the content to notice something wrong.

I think the best we can do in these situations is just not read the story.

  • BERJAYA

even if a fic is ai, it still doesn’t give you or anybody the “right” to call them out for… doing their hobby / engaging in their hobby in a way that you don’t approve of. I dislike ai fics, but I will never shame, harass or “call out” people who let ai write for them, because 1. what they do is not my business 2. chances are that it will lead to harassment, which is not something I condone.

again. what a person chooses to do when it comes to their hobby, whether or not they choose to use ai, is no one’s business but their own’s. I can disagree with them — by minding my own business and not reading their fic — without resorting to criticizing them, commenting unkind things on their fic, or making a call out post against them.

  • Mannnnn why is this festival I'm at planning to release doves today when it is predicted to be 96° with a heat index of 111°.

I think dove releases are pointless and mean to the doves even under the best of circumstances, but this is straight up animal cruelty and these things are gonna drop dead from heat exhaustion. What the fuck.

  • BERJAYA

Even under "ideal" circumstances a dove release is just driving a domesticated animal a few dozen miles away from its home and making it fly back, exposing it to hazards like weather, cars, windows, and predators. They're not native birds, they're pets, and if they're white they have zero camouflage. I have found several injured white pigeons over the years that I suspect were "dove releases."

What do people think is supposed to happen to the birds in a dove release. I'm gonna drive you ten miles away and make you walk home during a heat wave because it's so beautiful and inspirational to me

  • BERJAYA

These poor white pigeons are flying from Dundalk to Virginia during a heat and wildlife smoke advisory. An osprey immediately came out of the trees while they were circling the river and started following them. They are gonna have a rough day of flying home, if they make it at all. ugh.

  • BERJAYA

Now the dove guy is letting the festival children pet his harris hawk 🚬🫩 I feel like such a killjoy but as someone who's worked in wildlife rehab and handled raptors for educational programs, the "this is my pet" vibes are rancid to me.

  • BERJAYA

Man okay I just had to leave my station and go sit down outside the event. He just handed his hawk to a festival goer he gave a glove to and told her to throw him in the air so that the hawk flies back to him. He literally said "I don't know if this is going to work" as I was leaving. This feels so wildly irresponsible!!!!

I will never understand why people upload cropped, low-res, uncredited art. Here's the full piece, originally created for a collaboration with watchmaker Ulysse Nardin:

  • A six-panel comic titled "what to do if you find a wild baby bunny in North America." There's a drawing of a cute baby bunny on a patch of grass with some daisies, and it's saying "You found me. Hello." A drawing of rabbit nests. The text says "Most North American rabbits don't burrow. The mom rabbit makes a nest on the ground." There's an image of a circle of dried grass against a green lawn, labeled "It's well-hidden under dry grass or leaves." Then there's an image of baby rabbits curled up in fur, labeled "Underneath, the young are in a fur-lined bowl". "Check your lawn before you mow!" An image of a mom rabbit nursing her tiny young who are crawling out of the nest against green grass and daisies. Text says "If you find a nest and don't see the mom, don't worry. She only visits for a few minutes every day to nurse." The mom says "Dinner is served." Text at the bottom says "Leave the nest alone and be sure to keep dogs and cats away." An image of the top of the nest against green grass with a tic tac toe pattern of dried grass on it. Text says "If you think the babies have been orphaned, do this test: Use sticks or long grass to make a Tic Tac Toe pattern on the nest. Come back after at least 18 hours. If the pattern hasn't been disturbed, contact a wildlife rehabilitator." An image of a small baby bunny sitting on some green grass. Text says "A baby bun leaves the nest in 3-4 weeks. If you find a bun on its own that looks like this, ears stick up, open eyes, 4-5 inch (10-13 cm) long, hops well, furred, uninjured, then it's just fine. Don't kidnap it!" A cute bunny is jumping over green grass, and another is sitting up and saying "Thank you for bunderstanding." Text says "If not, or if a bun was touched by a cat, contact a wildlife rehabilitator. These are just the bun basics. For more detailed advice, consult your local wildlife rescue!"ALT

What to do if you find a baby bunny.

  • We haven't been super active on this blog in a while, but lately something has come to our attention that we want to address, since we rely heavily on Google Image Search to identify original works and their creators.

As of late May [1], Google has begun saving images uploaded to Image Search and Google Lens for the purpose of training its AI. This change affects users globally, and users are opted in by default.

Some people might not view this as problematic, and that’s their prerogative when the images are their own. But we don't feel great about uploading images we don't own to those services, even if it's with the aim of crediting the original artists, even if those images have likely been scraped a thousand times already.

Apparently there are ways to opt out, but those settings are being rolled out gradually over the next several months [2] and we don't see them currently in our own Google accounts. Until we can confirm that we have opted out, this blog will remain on hiatus.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to double check your Google Search Services settings if you use those services and want to opt out [3].

  • what "death of the author" means:

    • a lot of people think the only point of engagement with art is just to decode exactly what the author was trying to say, and their intent is the "real meaning," and once you've figured out the real meaning you're done you've solved it. that's dumb and boring. don't do that.

things death of the author does not mean:

    • every interpretation is equally valid
    • you are forbidden to treat what we can know or reasonably guess about the author's intentions as something that matters to your interpretation at all
    • the only valid way to interpret fiction is to treat it like it's a documentary of events that really happened and never think about it in terms of "why would the creator, a human person, choose to present it this way"
    • authors shouldn't get to have opinions about what they intended to say through their work, they should shut up and let me tell them what it means because i know better
    • actually i, the person reading or watching or viewing this art, am the infallible source of real meaning, and everybody who disagrees with me is wrong including but not limited to the author
    • the audience is the infallible source of real meaning, not the author, and that's why they committed a war crime by not treating my own headcanons as authoritative
  • unpopular opinion probably but I actually like that ao3 doesn’t let people take back their kudos.

unlike social media platforms (which ao3 is not) where people unlike stuff whenever they think or find out the original posters’ moral compass doesn’t perfectly align with their own’s or whatever, and “likes” can be taken back at any time, ao3 treats kudos as something sacred. once you give it, it’s the author’s to keep forever.

  • BERJAYA

But it does mean that there's a certain subset of readers who refuse to give kudos because there's no take backs and they're terrified of being found out for kudosing a problematic fic

  • BERJAYA

yes. that’s one of the reasons why it’s sacred :)

  • just so yall know

art block is your brain telling you to do studies.

draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.

art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard

think of it as level grinding for your next work.

  • BERJAYA

As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time.  Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when you’re not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you.  So, when you get back to that big/important piece?  You’ll know what to do and how to do it.

Nothing in nature blooms all year round.  Rest, and take care of yourself.

  • BERJAYA

i want someone to put this into writer’s blocks now

  • BERJAYA

Writer’s block means you need to relearn the whole alphabet. idiot.

  • BERJAYA

For writers block- same thing. Do Studies.

Write a description of an object. write the weather today. Write a made up characterization of a random photo of an actor from the internet as to the character they are in that picture. Write a little story about your pet’s day. Write about spilling soup and make it super dramatic and tragic. Write about someone’s day being ruined and make it funny. Write a meetcute coffeeshop AU of two OCs you’d never put together- maybe from different stories. Write them breaking up.

Write a bunch of short stuff meant for no audience ever and super duper self indulgent.
