A great insight from our MD on the original vision of the The Mandalika and the Mandalika Grand Prix/Circuit.

With all the noise around #MotoGP moving from Phillip Island to Adelaide and it being a street circuit I thought I'd give my thoughts on the situation. In 2018, together with the Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation we approach what was then DORNA with the idea of the first MotoGP street circuit. The Mandalika was a 1200Ha master planned resort which, at its heart had a series of infrastructure roads. Working with Roadgrip Ltd and Driven International Ltd we carefully and sympathetically adjusted the master plan so that one of the ring roads could be transformed temporarily into a racing circuit. A circuit that, when not being raced on, could be returned back to a resort road where the gravel run off areas were removed to reveal connecting roads, where there were pop up restaurants and shops around the track and where some barriers could be removed whilst others could be dressed in branding and landscaping. The concept was signed off by the client and DORNA and approved by the FIM and construction began just as the COVID 19 Pandemic hit. Overnight Indonesias tourism market (along with the rest of the worlds) nose dived. Incredibly the Indonesian government honoured the agreement with DORNA and ploughed on with the construction and successfully brought MotoGP back to the country on the worlds first street circuit for the premier class of bike racing. Sadly, the pandemic did mean that the hotels, villas, restaurants and shops that made up the remainder of the resort were put on hold and the true vision for Mandalika hasn't been realised. This has meant that a lot of fans and people on the outside haven't seen what could have been. Below is a short video showing what the original vision was meant to be where you can see how incredible the plan was and I for one hope that the full vision is one day realised. However, what could have been is now potentially happening in #Adelaide in 2027 and I think its exciting. Yes, Phillip Island a stunning track, in fact one of my all time favourite tracks, but it lacks the infrastructure and accommodation required of a modern MotoGP track. I'll be very sad to see it go but I'm equally excited to see what Adelaide can achieve using the old F1 track. Change isn't a bad thing and its great to disrupt, explore and grow!

Praise indeed. Thank you Mr Rossi!

Valentino Rossi has praised the Mandalika International Street Circuit, calling it a "beautiful track" with a "very good layout".  During his visit to Lombok for a training session with the VR46 Riders Academy, he expressed his admiration for the circuit, stating, "The circuit is good, all riders like Mandalika. The layout is very good, with beautiful scenery close to the sea, so I think it will be a great Grand Prix where everyone will enjoy watching". As the team behind the circuit, I think that Driven International Ltd, Roadgrip Ltd and Mrk1 should be very proud of Valentino's comments!

In 2021, the management of Yas Marina Circuit (YMC) approached MRK1 due to the frustration with the lack of overtaking during Formula 1 races. Together with Formula 1 and in partnership with Driven International Ltd we worked closely with the YMC team to enhance the characteristics of the circuit, remove 5 corners and inject some fresh life into the layout. We had a tight timeframe and a strict budget and we delivered changes that, since 2021 have spoken for themselves with a significant amount of overtaking, not just for F1 but also all other races and categories that have competed there. If any circuits on the F1 calendar have a similar issue with overtaking and would like Mrk1 & Driven International Ltd to undertake a study of your layout and offer some solutions, please feel free to reach out.
